Title: I just downloaded ...
Post by: uwe on July 01, 2016, 06:01:35 AM
... all five current Taylor Swift albums plus the 13 CD Foghat Bearsville Years Boxed Set on my Brennan B2 hard disk in the office. I was done with ripping Nick Cave and Einstürzende Neubauten.

What does that make me? Eclectic, mad, indiscriminate or just equipped with a plain bad taste throughout the decades?

13 Foghat CDs is a lot.  ;)

Taylor Swift is great... to look at.  8) I actually do admire the kid. She seems pretty down to Earth for a Hollyweirdo on the rise.

I kind of liked how she forcefully transferred herself from New Country star to, well, pop star (against industry backlash), out went the steel guitars, in came the 80ies synths! Not that there was anything wrong with the curly-haired Taylor Swift to the now more urban NYC version, but she wanted change as you would expect from a young woman her age.

And one thing she doesn't (can't?) do: that melisma thing which Dave so hates. OTOH her voice is nothing to write home about, but she can write a tune or two.

I bought/buy her CDs because she is a cultural phenomenon. Gotta keep abreast with things! But in my heart of hearts I like her better:

But I like goat music! And they don't use autotune like Ms. Swift obviously does.

Pah, Foghat never autotuned and had iconic 'taches!

Older Foghat kicked ass.

Is there a Midwesterner among us?  Foghat is fly-over-country arena rock!

But even with Frau Swift I am not sure whether the audible autotune is not a nod to "what modern pop is supposed to sound like" and her attempt of 80ies dance pop reception. I guess autotuned, multi-layered voices are to today's pop what distorted guitars became to rock and pop in the 60ies: a sound that provides a setting and has the listener identify "his" or "her" preferred category of music immediately. Back in her New Country or Country Pop days, her vocals sounded less processed (or were less overtly processed).

As long as you got In The Mood For Something Rude, you're forgiven.

Yeah, that is part of the collection, one of the later ones. I basically only know Fool for the City (the album) and their other hit songs (had a double CD compilation from them) from Foghat, I thought I'd catch up a little. They were (though a Brit band) strictly a Yank phenomenon, never toured Europe in the 70ies if I'm not mistaken, certainly not Germany, the Midwest was obviously large enough to keep them busy. I even bought a Savoy Brown CD to get the foundations right.

Excellent!  The only way it gets any better would be if they had auto tuned the goat!  ;D

There is one Savoy Brown LP (1970's Looking In... contains an earlier version of Leaving Again) that is effectively Foghat with Kim Simmonds on lead in place of Rod Price... Lonesome Dave was vox throughout... pretty good LP too... they all split at that point and Foghat was born...

I have a fondness for the first two Foghat albums, but I have to say that I think they sounded their best on Fool For The City and In The Mood For Something Rude.  The common element there was bassist/producer Nick Jameson.  He brought out their best.

Savoy Brown is one of my favorite bands.  I love the older Chris Youlden stuff, but I think their best would be Street Corner Talkin' with Dave Walker on vocals.

I met Taylor Swift's bass player a couple of times and we became sort of friends. He invited me for the Taylor Swift gig in The Netherlands last year. We went for some beers first and afterwards I saw the concert.

I would've never payed 90 euros to see her, but the show was great. Normally I see old people with guitars (Who, Macca, Noel Gallagher, Weller) in such venues and now I got a show with nine dancers, rotating catwalks, ress changes, the works! 17.000 people with LED wrist bands, which were lighting up or flickering in different colours. So the whole venue was flashing blue or non flashing red, .... It was great to see such a show:) And her songs are nice too. I think she got some positive reception after Ruan Adams covered her complete album.

Next week back to just guys and guitars. Vintage Trouble. Basvarken will see them tonight and I will see them wednesday... ...exact 3 years after I saw them opening for the Who! July 5th 2013 and July 5th 2016.

And then there's the live side of Savoy Brown's Blue Matter album. Lonesome Dave singing all 3 tracks because Chris Youlden was down with something. Until this day one of my fave slices of 60s UK white boy blues.

I have a theory that good taste and Gemans are like two parallel lines, they can never meet. Thanks to Uwe I have just proved you I am right. :P

I have a sudden itch to have a couple of people of this forum summarily shot to restore a semblance of order!

If it wasn't for me, those Dutchies wouldn't even know who Vintage Trouble are! Would have loved to go.

Heard the first Foghat album this morning - you've got to start somewhere -, liked what I heard, even some Beatles influence in places. They do play Maybellene fast!

Here's a Celine antidote...John Carpenter's theme from Big Trouble in Little China, with Carpenter and two of his friends from USC film school performing the song as The Coup de Villes.

One of the more fun movies made in that period!

I used to think the Gong track 'Fohat Digs Holes in Space' was called 'Foghat Digs Holes in Space'. Beyond that I have nothing.

My girlfriend is a fan of Taylor Swift. I quite like the composition but I find the albums are a bit brickwall'd for my tastes. I find music like that triggers a bit of a fight-or-flight response. An acoustic guitar shouldn't be that punchy.

Foghat's live album and their cover of I Just Wanna Make Love to You were pretty big hits when I was in 8th grade, then I saw them early freshman year (because they were on the bill with Rush). I like their stuff. They were no Pat Travers Band, but it was some good boogie rock!  ;)

I do have a taste for fun "B" movies. If you're going to be a B movie, be wholehearted about it. Army of Darkness comes to mind.

I know what you mean - it gets tiresome quickly. Madonna albums sound that way too. Of course it's produced for maximum effect with in-ear-plugs from an iPod or even iPhone as an mp3. Most Taylor Swift fans probably know home stereos only from their parents (and those are probably in the process of giving them up!).

It's beyond me. I never dug the immediate sound of headphones, I have a pair of expensive ones which I never ever use. I like to hear lots of "room" (i.e. not just room within the music, but the particular physical space I hear the music in) with my music.

Now that you mention it, my girlfriend listens to her Taylor Swift tunes on her Iphone's built in speaker, and the sound carries surprisingly robustly through our apartment.

Now that we're back to Taylor Swift, I heard two talking heads this morning saying it's rumored that her latest boyfriend is part of a hoax, that he's really a character in a movie she's making.  I started to ask myself how celebrity obsessed has our society become that people would even care. Then I remembered the Kuntrashian clan. Nope, there are worse people to obsess over than Taylor Swift.

The kids got me some decent headphones for Christmas, and I actually like them.

The bass sounds big and fat on the "Let it Be" album.
