Title: Mando bass going cheap?
Post by: Barklessdog on August 07, 2008, 01:34:58 PM
You know no collection is complete without one!

I wonder if you could even ship it overseas??

You might have to paddle it across.

Last one I saw for sale was for like $29,000 or some wild price for the Gibby version.

It's kind of tempting even though it's just a Kalamazoo and not a Gibbie. You could make something beautiful out of it and its not beyond repair.

I would love to see your band's faces if you showed up with that!

I'd love to see his luthier's face!  :o

It's not beyond repair, but it's a Kalamazoo. Not chipboard as in the 60s, but they probably cut corners in materials and construction techniques compared to a Gibson.

The Kalamazoo (back then) was real close to the Gibson Mando bass.  Binding, and probably lower grade top wood is the significant difference.  The comparison between the two marques in the pre-war era is more like Gibson vs Epiphone in the early 60s.  That being said, Gibson Mando basses used to turn up pretty frequently in the 80s usually in the $1000 range.  Like the EB6, a lot of people would own them for a while, and then start to think of basses they could have bought with the money and actually played.

$1300 was a steal if one really wanted one and could not afford a Gibson version.

Tsk Tsk- this could of been Uwe

That's okay, he would have had a hard time sourcing kangaroo gut strings.

 "Yummm taste like chicken!"

John are you using his toothpaste? ........... ???

Not surprised that you'd brush his teeth tho, I seem to recall your trips to the vet for this as being rather adventurous.

He just hates to have his toe nails trimmed, anything else he's fine, shot blood samples, anything but those nails. That sets him off!

Look whats under the blanket!
Surprise!

He's actually been pretty mellow the last three years (he's 7 now).
