Or are there actually Gibson fans out there who don't belong to this forum?  ;D

The Outpost Cafe / Cannons and Tootles
« on: November 04, 2010, 05:54:31 PM »

Being a guy sometimes I like to shoot or blow stuff up or watch it being shot and blown up. That's how I came across these. My kids want one of those cannons real bad. The second video features a grandma I would have loved to go shooting with (so long as my tootles were off limits).

There's supposed to be news of it on the page but I found mostly pictures. It'll be interesting to see what they build this time.

Some of us got into this to get rich (ha ha), get laid, have fun, or maybe even avoid responsibility. Maybe even all of the above. Most of what we play is loud and fun and not usually very subtle, but music at its core speaks to and feeds the soul. Sometimes it even saves lives. This video reminds me of what music really means to me.

You may know all of this already but I thought of you when I read it and wanted to share just in case. The trailer definitely makes me want to see this film.

The Bass Zone / Auditioned for a band
« on: October 01, 2010, 05:18:03 PM »
It's been a while since I played with anyone but lately I've been thinking it might do me good to get back on the horse.

I found some guys that work for an educational programming company and who have a band. They play conferences every 4-6 weeks for their sales force who the company brings in from around the country. They do a set of the kiddie stuff that's on the software and then do regular sets after the dinner. So they get fed, get paid, and end up getting other gigs off the strength of people seeing them at these sales meetings. It could also be a stretch for me because they transpose stuff for their singer who is young, cute, and definitely female. I'm used to four on the floor rock band stuff so it'd be fun having to learn a wide variety of material.

They rehearse in the band room of the school the company also runs, and have their run of the recording studio there as well. I met with them this week and I guess I did OK because the next morning they called off the other auditions and asked me to join up.

And my first gig is in two weeks. Out of the frying pan...  :o

The Outpost Cafe / Show and Tell
« on: September 17, 2010, 05:46:12 PM »
My new Kindergartner had his first show and tell today. They had to do something that started with an 'a' or 'b'. Last night, while we discussed his options, he skipped right past 'a' and declared, "I'll take MY blue bass!"

So his first ever show and tell was a blue Bach Non Reverse Thunderbird bass. Times like these I love being a dad!

The Outpost Cafe / A 45 Year Old College Freshman?
« on: September 17, 2010, 01:02:36 PM »
Some guys have a mid life crisis and buy a Corvette, a few new basses, and have affairs with hot and slutty minkies. My being somewhat contrary throughout my life, mine involves getting rid of the (previously unknown to be) slutty wife, fighting a nasty divorce I never asked for (I've always been a faithful sort) and deciding after all these years that the grown up job I never needed is now my best option for the future.

So, I am now a 45 year old college freshman. Over the next 7-8 years my plan is to obtain a BA in history and then a JD from a decent law school. Uwe, having been the recipient of my most treasured basses over the last few years, will have a double brother in arms once I'm done.

And no, all those Gibsons in his office aren't the reason I chose this path. I have known since at least the age of eleven that the mold I was cast with made me a logical, obsessive, argumentative SOB from the start. With a temperament like that, what better career path to follow than law?

The fact that I'll have two sons to put through college when I'm in my 60's is also another thing I considered. I need a career I can work in past a 'normal' retirement age, and as long as my mind stays in one piece I should be OK in that regard as well. So wish me luck, guys!

The Outpost Cafe / You Know What Sucks?
« on: July 12, 2010, 08:09:54 AM »
Cheating spouses, that's what!

I don't want to go too much into a tear because I could write pages right now (and I know there are many reasons for how and why it happens), but wow, talk about feeling like shit...

So my boys and I are on our own. The wife moved out and is juggling two boyfriends right now who have no idea the other exists. Talk about a tempting prospect in letting them know about each other! Can't do it though because I'm trying to be on my best behavior until I have it all on the dotted line. As piss poor a replacement for a mother as I may be, they'll be FAR better off with me than she who refuses to grow up.

For those of you who put stock in good thoughts and prayers, I would really appreciate and could use a few right now. This place is my home away from home and though I've never actually seen most of you in the flesh (that was for you, Fraulein  ;)) , you guys mean a lot to me.

Insulting and moronic 7th grade language warning. The thing that made this so funny for me is that it's his brother who was taping it. You gotta love brothers!

Brought to you by some Taiwanese animator. No body parts are exposed but it's pretty disturbing nonetheless.

Just remember, what has been seen cannot be unseen!

The Outpost Cafe / I hope this doesn't cause any permanent damage!
« on: June 24, 2010, 04:52:23 PM »
I just got tickets to take my 5 year old to see KISS in September. He discovered them a few years ago when he spied the cover to Gene's book on my bookshelf and wanted to know who it was. Since then he's always thought they were 'cool'. Of course, his only reference is old DVDs and YouTube videos of the band in their prime. I figure his youth and the sheer spectacle of it will cover for Paul's blown out voice or any other issues, though he's gonna be pissed when I have to explain that that's not Ace up there...

My first concert was Alice Cooper so I can't complain, though at the time I was ten years older than my boy will be for his. Lucky kid!

Anybody have any tips on appropriate sized hearing protection for a five year old?

Guitars Etc. / Quality Child Size Guitars?
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:47:27 PM »
My five year old wants guitar lessons (which I'm more than happy to make happen), but I want to get him a guitar that, while small enough for his stature, is equal in quality to anything I'd buy for him if he were 17 and asking. I'm leaning electric for the time being but could go either way. I know of smaller basses out there but have no clue about guitars. Anybody out there have any experience or advice?

On 2 Feb 1970 a 71st FIS F-106A (S/N 58-0787) entered a flat spin forcing pilot Capt Gary Faust to eject.  Un-piloted, the aircraft recovered on its own and miraculously made a gentle belly landing in a snow-covered Montana field.  In some stories, as you'll read below, it became know as the "Cornfield Bomber".  At the time of the incident the tail markings belonged to the 71st FIS out of Malmstrom AFB, however the 71st FIS was later changed to the  319th FIS, Malmstrom.  Retired Colonel Wolford (Major at the time) was the Chief of Maintenance at the 71st FIS at the time.  His name was stenciled on the side of 58-0787 as the pilot, however, Major Wolford wasn't flying the bird at the time of the incident.  Read more accounts of this incident below.

This is a pretty cool story that I'd never heard. I figure some of you guys might like this.

The Bass Zone / Metallica bassist helps recover Jaco's Bass of Doom
« on: May 29, 2010, 04:23:25 PM »

Quote
METALLICA's official web site has been updated with the following message:

"Jaco Pastorius has long been regarded as one of, if not the, most influential bass guitarist of all time and as some of you may know, is Robert's [Trujillo, METALLICA bassist] personal hero. So upon overhearing a phone conversation that Jaco's legendary 'Bass of Doom' had resurfaced after being missing for over twenty years, but was tied up in an ugly legal battle, Robert instinctively offered to assist the Pastorius family in its recovery. The happy ending is that the bass is with Robert and the Pastorius family...a true piece of musical history.

"Like so many other musical greats, Jaco Pastorius died young, only 35, but his legacy has lasted the test of time. With his pioneering techniques, charismatic and outrageous stage performances and his unmistakable singular style, Jaco left behind a musical legacy that has continued to inspire and influence ongoing generations worldwide. Through his critically acclaimed self titled solo debut album, his work with break-through fusion/jazz group WEATHER REPORT, whose 'Heavy Weather' album is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and his collaborations with singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, Jaco's reputation and influence grew to permeate many musical styles and genres.

"The legendary 'Bass of Doom,' nicknamed by Jaco himself, is a 1962 Fender jazz bass that Jaco removed the frets from and refinished the neck with boat epoxy. This customized bass was the only fretless instrument Jaco ever recorded with throughout his career right up until it was stolen from a Manhattan park bench in 1986. Despite repeated attempts from friends and family to locate it, the whereabouts of the famous bass remained unknown until it showed up in early 2006 in a small guitar shop on New York's West Side. Unfortunately the owner of the shop refused to return it to the Pastorius family resulting in protracted legal squabbles. Almost two years passed before Robert was able to jump in and help make it possible for the family to settle out the case and regain control of their father's prized bass.

"When asked about his getting involved, Robert commented, 'I felt a strong sense that it was the right thing to do for Jaco, and the family, whatever it took.'"

I just hope it's not one of the 'road worn' reissues!
