Well here was a fix that worked....

The Pace is a EB type piezo bridge--it apparently wants to have steel on steel contact to make the tone.

What I did was coat about the last 3/8 inch of nylon tape on the strings with thin super glue so that it wouldn't unravel--then I cut off the last 2/8 inch of the black tape with a pen knife, exposing the steel core so that it could make contact with the steel piezo saddle in the bridge.

Strings sound evenly now...actually sounds pretty good...thanks for all of your suggestions...I really appreciate the input.

What a PITA, though...my never ending Pace love-hate relationship.

GHS Tapes look like light gauge boomers under the black wrap. The black wrap is super smooth and feels almost like gut under your fingers.

Put some GHS tapewounds on the Pace upright

Two strings sound fine, and two don't sound at all--seems like there's not enough downwward pressure on the piezo element to make a good tone?

Anybody else experience this with a piezo bridge? and is there a fix?

One idea I had was to put a couple of washers on the ball end of the string so that it will pull the silks back an eighth of an inch or so off the bridge. Maybe they will sound then.

The strings that sound have pretty good tone.

Thanks

Pat

o-k I strung up a Dano with GHS precision flats short scale

Sound and play great right out of the pack-no break in needed-e string vibrates freely and naturally.

Low tension, but not too low...these will be my "go to" flats--remind me of the strings that used to come on a RIC--now if I can only get the GHS nylon tapewounds to work on my Pace Bass...

kinda scary when you realize that vacuum tubes produced by the same technology are probably controlling all the nukes.

Good luck Scott...think you have the right idea. Don't give up.

I live in fear of this, ...at 52...lets just say there are younger kids than me who are better with technology than I am at this point.  And probably cheaper, too.   Although experience still is in my favor, at least for a little while...but things are really slow around here...

Got a set of GHS precision flats coming in the mail for one of my Danos...I'll let you know how they are...I'm hoping for a balance between old school sound with modern flexibility.

The brilliance of Jorma's guitar playing has always impressed me.

Saw Bill Monroe twice--both times at a little theater in Wilmington Ohio---Super ornate theater built in the 1920's, and pretty much left alone after that...was like doing the time warp or something...stepping back 50 or 60 years...

I miss my old RB 100, but I don't miss banjo tuners...will have to get another banjo sometime (maybe soon).

I don't like modern country at all, but I do like the old stuff...we still play stuff like "Crazy" etc.  the old stuff often has nicely crafted melodies and changes---all of the elements of music.

Was just thinking, I haven't heard the Flying Burrito Bros in ages...need to go looking for some of their stuff.

I have to agree about the RD Standard...always had more punch than the Artist...felt this way about the Victory also.

Sometimes I just want a groove...feel that way about Phil Lesh too.

I'm a simple man.

Gibson Basses / Re: John Gustafson first English T-Bird Player?

I played one in '76...new one at a music store...

The guitar player was the store manager, and we used to practice there.

Think it was $950 in '76...

I thought that was the best sounding bass...I played a '73 or '74 precision at the time, and I just loved how the T-bird had that huge girth, but also had a great treble "ping" or presence that really brought the note out with a flatpick.

Also liked the G-3
