Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Guild B-302 Mod and Restoration
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:44:03 AM »
Hello All,

This started out in " Other Bass Brands " http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=1447.0 but as it's turned into a mod and restore project, I thought it was more appropriate to continue it here....

1979 Guild B-302, cracked headstock ( repaired ), replaced J-bass pups ( replaced with an original in the bridge posiyion and a DiMarzio Model One in the neck ) brown sunblah finish ( stripped soon to be black ) that's about where it is at the moment, and now for a few pics to get this post up to speed..........

This is where it started.....nothing too bad....

Non original J pickups....

Headstock repair before, during, currently...

It should be noted that I didn't do the repair, although it was done solidly albeit not the prettiest I've ever seen, I stripped the finish and did a little smoothing to make the break a bit nicer...

Here it is with a couple of sealer coats, not too bad...

At this point I could have redone the 'burst on the headstock and left it alone.....but...

I decided to re-fin it in black with a natural neck and add a Model One in the neck position....

Back of the neck with a few coats of clear ( note the vintage tint to the maple center ) I've got what I hope is a cool idea for the back of the headstock, but we'll have to wait for the pics...

Nice contrast on the " wings "

Finally a few body shots, including the route for the Model One

That's it for now, I'll be working on a new pickguard and filling a few dings around the perimeter of the body and then paintwork.

Cheers,

Scott ( BassVI )

Gibson Basses / Model One or Will Power?
« on: November 06, 2008, 12:54:42 AM »
Posted something along these lines on the Other brands forum,
but as these are Mudbucker sized objects ( MSO's? ) I thought I'd see if anyone could descibe the differences, Dimarzio says the WPs' poles are spaced for longer scaled basses ( I'm thinking about my Guild B-302 ) but tonally it has a little more low-end than I may prefer. They don't give the pole spacing for either one, only saying it's a drop-in for a Mudbucker ( like anything is ever a "drop-in" ;D ) Anyway, any thoughts?

Other Bass Brands / Guild B-302 ( Mod, Modder, Moddingest! )

Hello All,
Latest addition to the roster. Sometimes maligned, but odd shapes are a bit of my thing.......

I got inspired to get one of these a couple of weeks ago when I saw this

It's black, always a plus, and a Model One! The crazy shape.........

So, didn't bid on that one, but started looking....found this one on Craigslist....

Brown sunburst  :bored: and non-original J-bass pickups (didn't notice it in the pics) repaired headstock (solid and could actually be concealed in the 'burst) decent original hardcase for about half what they've been going for on the 'bay  ;D

Cleaned up, restrung, minor electrical repairs (cleaned the pots, new jack....man West Coast stuff oxidizes!)

Headstock repair....not so bad....

So, how does it sound and play? In a word......Great! Soundwise, with both pickups full on, alot like my Orville 'Bird with the SD Custom Shop pickups, either pickup soloed, much more Fender-ish, albeit with a nice Mahog blur. The neck pickup alone is particularly "nasaly" sounding, won't be using it that way much. As for playing, the neck is alot chunkier than my 'Bird, but very comfortable. Balance is about the same as a Thunderbird, bit of neck dive, could probably benefit from a strap button relocation, but I'll try a different strap first. Gotta love the Uber three point bridge, although the giant knurled post will eventually grind the side of my picking hand raw, could really use a bridge cover....hmmmmmm.......nope!!! nothing big enough in my parts drawer to cover it!

Anyway, anyone else here have one of these? Not sure if I want to do anything about the pickups, but if anybody has/knows of any originals PM me. I'm still mulling about the Model One, maybe some kind of MudBird thing. And I really may have to do something about the brownburst, I know it's original and mahogany is pretty and all, but it's just a finish that I can't get excited about, factoring in the headstock repair, the non-original pickups and cracked pickguard, I don't know if a refin would devalue it that much (for what I gave for it, it doesn't have much value ;) anyway)

All in all a pretty decent, vintage, USA made bass that sounds and plays quite well. Love to hear any insights or comments.

Cheers,

Scott (BassVI)

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / G3 6-way Switch Mod
« on: October 19, 2008, 09:39:39 PM »
Hello All,

In response to requests for an explanation of this scheme I did when I built my G3/Ripper clone " The Anna Tomick " model ( too long story ) I'll try to give fairly clear instuctions as to what it does and what I did.
AFAIK this should work for any stock G3, I used essentially the same parts and values on mine. One warning, this will change your bass from "stock" and though I feel it's a significant improvement, please don't hold me responsible for burnt fingers, solder splashes, lost sleep...........and I apologize in advance if my desciption isn't really technical, it was pretty hit or miss, me and several sets of jumper wires and no reall "theory".

What you will need:

One NOS 6-way switch, I picked up several from our friends on eBay, they don't have any listed at the moment (you can use a 6 position 4 pole switch like Allparts sells but it is deeper and will probably require routing...)

http://www.allparts.com/store/electronics-switches-ep-0920-000,Product.asp

I used one of these (above) on the original but this one (below) is much more elegant

Here is the Allparts switch

And the NOS switch

As for anything else, it should all be in your G3  ;D

What it does....
Pos 1 Neck pickup
Pos 2 Neck/Middle
Pos 3 Middle
Pos 4 Middle/Bridge
Pos 5 Bridge
Pos 6 Neck/Bridge

As you see, it eliminates the "buck and a half" all three pickup setting, position 6 could be wired that way with another jumper but the Neck/Bridge (which you can't get with the stock setup) seemed more "natural" to me.

Now the process.....

Unsolder the three way toggle, I assume (hopefully :-[) that these will be the white wires. Gibson used several different color schemes, what you want is to find the "hot" wire (white in the pic), the other two, the one that appears to be soldered to the plate on the bottom of the pickup (black) and the "other one" (in this case orange) both solder to ground....this pic may make it a bit clearer......

In the above pic the white wires go to the switch, the others to ground, in this case the back of the volume pot. I believe ( but since I have no original G3 to look at ) that you should be able to unsolder the wires at the switch and leave everything else as is, if I'm wrong let me know and I'll try to modify the scheme.

For the actual connections please refer to these crude illustrations....

The lower ring refers to the terminals on the bottom of the switch (closest to you when installed on the pickguard) the upper being the row of terminals next to the guard itself.

Neck pickup hotwire connects to upper ring terminals 1,12,13
Middle hotwire to lower ring 3,4,5
Bridge to lower ring 2

Now the jumpers

Connect upper ring terminal 2 to lower ring terminal 1 and then to upper ring 8 (this terminal[8]* is the output to the volume pot )
Connect lower ring terminal 2 to upper ring terminal 10

*Connect [8] to volume pot, use whatever connection previously coming from the toggle, in my case it was the middle lug.

Here are several other views hopefully they will help you visualize what I have tried ( all I can say is I tried! ) to explain.

Best Wishes, hopefully this will explain more than mystephy! Please let me know if anyone needs more info or a better pic. Really any decent tech should be able to figure out what's going on I did! and building/finishing not wiring is my strong suit.

Cheers!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / My Phil Lynott tribute bass
« on: October 04, 2008, 09:53:58 PM »
Hello All!

Well the "Who deserves a Tribute bass" topic got me thinking.......and as I haven't built a Fender style bass in a while.
The details...
Allparts body and neck, Allparts is sourcing their bodies from the US, the neck is still MIJ (and still very nice) the body I might add is very nice also and quite light weight, the bass weighs in at about 7 1/2 pounds.

Fender "original Precision bass pickups (a set of grey-bottoms would have been more correct) Fender/Schaller 70s' tuning machines and thumbrest.

Allparts vintage bridge (threaded saddles) the smooth saddles would have been correct but I like the nickel finish on the vintage style.

Mirrored acrylic pickguard from Dazbootman pickguards (highly recomended, Bryan (Boots) is a great guy to work with)

Minwax Polycrylic undercoat, Nitro lacquer topcoats.

Now some pics.....

I wish I was a better photog!

Mirror,mirror

Hello all,
Well I'm into yet another project, but I thought I would share a finishing procees (using water-based Minway POLYcrylic clear) I'm trying out, though the idea is certainly not my own. Check out this shortcut to the ReRanch discussion board and the I'll add my two cents......

http://www.reranch.com/reranch/viewtopic.php?t=21213&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

First comment; It really dosn't matter if you brush it, spray it or use the areosal cans, I tried all three. Spraying is obviously fast, but since it's being used as a filler/sealer and will be block sanded, brushing works fine and clean up is really easy.
Second; as stated in the RR forum, it runs, be prepared to......block sand.
Third; It really fills and seals well, I used it on a swamp ash body and got a glass smooth base for my NITRO color coats.

Anyway the first post in the link has most of the info you need, I wanted to let everyone here know about it and give a "hands on" report. I've exclusively used the tried and true lacquer sealer, oil-based grain filler and lacquer top coats for years and if I'm doing a Gibson finish on Mahogany I'll continue to do so ( for tradition sake if nothing else ) but for a Fender type finish, I think I may be a convert.

Questions? Comments?

I'll post some pics over the weekend, I should add the project is a Phil Lynott "tribute" bass......

Cheers,

Scott

OK, in a fit of..... ( well a fit anyway ) I picked up a nice Hagstom 8 string neck on the 'bay.
The question is where do I go from here? Build the body and improv on the electronics/hardware? Anyone have one for body tracings etc. Or my second thought, pick up a Hag four string ( which come up fairly often ) and mod it to the neck, the bodies and electronics look similar ( I think the pups have wider polepieces on the 8s' ) Any thoughts?

Gibson Basses / Next project help/advice
« on: March 04, 2008, 09:32:00 PM »
Ok, I'm not bidding on this one.......
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260216755996&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016
but I am thinking of building it......... of course any project requires some research, so fellows Gib-freaks ( and I mean that in the best way ) a few questions.
Scale length 30.5 or 34ish?
Mahog body, maple neck, all mahog, something else?
Headstock, same as Grabber/G3?
Ripper pickups?
Ebony or rosewood fingerboard?
Anyone have a tracing of the body outline and pickguard?
I'll be happy to send the familiar self-stamped envelope for the last one. Of course any and all advice, cautions, insight will be welcome. And I've got to give Jules credit for the inspiration, check out GoGo7188 on his forum, the V bass screams ( well growls anyway ). As always thanks in advance.

Gibson Basses / Ripper/G3 clone audio samples
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:21:15 PM »
Thanks to Mod Dave ( and Blazer ) for the info  ;D

A few audio samples of my R/G3, the first is the neck pup only direct into Cubase through a Zoom H4, no eq or effects, played with a pick ( of course )
Open E,A,D.G......chromatic from open E to c, then the chorus to one of my bands songs.....if this works I'll add the other combinations in order, neck, neck/middle, middle, etc.
Please see Daves' reply below: at his suggestion I was going to reload these as mp3s, however my version of Cubase just informed me I've reached my max number of mp3 transfers and I need to update @ $24.95.
While I love you guys, I just don't feel like messing with it right at the moment, so please bear with two snippets and a bit of a wait downloading them. I'll try to figure a better solution....... :)

Gibson Basses / Almost Instant Karma got me!
« on: February 01, 2008, 07:23:16 PM »
Everyone may ( or may not ) remember mine and Marks' ( Tbird1958 ) experience in transplanting 'bird pickups ( yeah the black plastic covered ones ) into beautiful chomey homes. I batted an awful .000, Mark however was at .500 having only destoyed one of two attempts. The short of this international revolt ( OK this isn't exactly going to be short, and maybe it's just an insurgancy ) against the anti-chrome ;D, was that I sent Mark my "orphan" black pup, which he successfully put in a much prettier "home". As a thank you, Mark sent me a chrome bridge cover ( Thank you again, mein Frau ).
Now the Karmic wheel turns, albeit slowly.
Said bridge cover was an orphan also, as I have four pairs ( bridge and handrests ) for my various projects and players.
Now to the point finally, I went into work today and the guys had gone into the scarey attic of the store yesterday ( my day off ) and found an old box of parts left over from when the store moved from it's old location, that was almost thirty years ago. On top of the pile was a handrest from a.......70s' 'bird, with just the right amount of "patina to match the rest of the bass. So there you have it, I lost a pickup, gained a cover and ended up with a set.
All's well that ends well,

Scott

Now if these guys would just find the rest of that 'bird................

Gibson Basses / Pelham Blue (Bird) of Happiness

 Well it's done.........
Most significant observation.....the two-point bridge and tailpiece do add to the sustain, not entirely suprizing, but a very cool side effect! One question.........Gold knobs or Black? ???
