Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson Pelham Blue - Question...

Laquer is still available. There is a company called Tower Paint, I think they are in Wisconsin. One of their specialities is producing laquer touch up paint for cars of the Fifties. They can mix paint from the codes on the provide.net pages, and put it in spray cans. Two cans is more than enough for a Thunderbird. If you want paint call them, their website isn't all that great. http://www.towerpaint.com

The Outpost Cafe / Re: Saw a new Challenger today

The They wanted $53,000 for it- $43,000 for the list price, taxes etc and a $12,000 market adjustment addition to the price!!!!!

The market adjustment is just to keep the riff-raff out. But it reminds me of the days when I was selling Toyotas in the mid-eighties. I sold the first Targa-roofed Supra in the Chicago area. Full list price (no market adjustment). The commission on that one sale was like an extra month's pay. Those were the days! Right now I could use the comission on a $12,000 market adjustment. (Actually I'd probably just use it to buy more bass gear.)

I really like the ones with the bridge and pickup covers. It's just the right finishing touch.

Yes he does, in the description area right below the blue top area it says Edition: BLACKSTAR. Not prominent, but he knows what he has.

OK, I stand corrected. It does say Blackstar in that top area that I never look at. The seller knows what he has, but he could promote it better, maybe by stating "Blackstar" in the title.

How about a Blackstar?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320265864845&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011

The seller pictures the COA, but never mentions Blackstar in the listing.

Granted, Model 1s were all the rage in the late seventies - you are absolved ...

Thank You, but you I'm still not selling. ;D

That brings up the question: what is this NR on ebay now worth. The only original and unmodified parts left are the tuners, truss rod cover, and electronics cover. The headstock has been repaired. I don't think I'd offer more than half of the buy it now.

"Should I have just put it under the bed and not used it?"

Uhm, yes! And sell it to me 40 years later.  ;D

Just joking, young men are free to channel their sexual aggressions and frustrations into the alteration of inanimate objects, but did it really have to be DiMarzio Model 1s? Was the the sound of the original sixties pup that bad to your ears?

Uwe

No, it's not that the original pickup was bad, in fact it wouldn't have happened had not the headstock broke. When I took it to the butcher shop for repair somehow it sounded good at the time to add a pickup, and replace the original so they'd both be the same. That was about 1978 and maybe the Model 1 was just coming out. It seemed a good idea at the time. And it did work well for me for years.

But now with modern amplification I don't like it so much anymore, and often think of reverting it back, but that would mean refinishing and everyone asking what happened to it, loss of mojo, etc.

And Uwe, it doesn't matter if it sat under the bed unused, or got modified and much used, if you want to buy it you will have to talk to my kids after I am gone because I'm not selling it. (unless under the most dire of circumstances)

What about this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Original-1967-Gibson-Thunderbird-Tbird-Bass-Guitar_W0QQitemZ290237886911QQihZ019QQcategoryZ64402QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Place this one under idiotic.

When you say idiotic I hope you are referring to the asking price.  Let's remember that all Sixties basses survived the Sixties, a time of testing boundaries, experimentation and individualism. It is not surprising that many were modified.

Actually the NR reminds me of my own Thunderbird that was just a two year old used TB II in Cardinal Red that I stripped, stained, broke, fixed, and modified. (It still sports 2 Dimarzio Model 1's) Should I have just put it under the bed and not used it? No, I think not.

How about a different Buck Owens paint scheme...?

I think this scheme would look great on a T-bird, but probably cost a bit more.

Gibson Basses / Re: Which EB for me?

Yep, that Flock.  Tom Webb was later known as T.S. Henry Webb aka The Barking Spider.  He was a real trip.  I've jammed with him in the past.  The song I remember by them was "Clown" (I think).  By the time I crossed paths with him (I did a full gig with him sitting in), he was a gravelly voiced harp player that had seen better days.

Fred Glickstein also went on to try the idea of a Jazz Wedding Orchestra in the late '80s.  His claim to fame was the marketing of the home clone kit.  "Be beside yourself with joy"  "Be the first to be the second on your block"

The guys I knew were actually in a band called Strategic Air Command that had a few remnants out of The Flock, but none of the original members.  Archie was the bassist, as I recall, but that's about it.  Out of that band came a singer in one of my bands, and a guitarist in another.

Cool, I saw them in Aurora, Illinois sometime in the late Sixties and was thoroughly impressed. I don't suppose there is a fan site, or any of their music floating around the internet.

BTW http://flockrock.com/ is so slow loading for me, but links to their music on Amazon. They must have gone through a transition after "Can't You See" by adding horns, but I do hear a similarity.

These guys here?

http://flockrock.com/

Sure look and sound like a band old Kansas would feel inspired by.  ;D

Never consciously heard them though "horn rock" appeals to me, I'm a Blood, Sweat & Tears diehard.

Uwe

I doubt it. The Flock I am talking about was probably from the Midwest US, and had a hit (maybe local) in the late sixties "Can't You See" and I have not been able to find anything online about them. I would like an MP3 of that song, I only have a cassette recorded from vinyl.

SG-RI you mean, right? Wouldn't wanna be caught here recommending the SG-Z  :D which is a nice instrument except for one - however crucial - failing: skimpy bass output!!! Only by playing the "neck" (= actually more a secondary bridge pup, it's so far back!) pup in solo mode and blowing up your bass frequencies beyond belief over a large rig do you get anything approaching a full bass sound. Noteworthy only for being the one Gibson bass with a pau ferro fretboard (announcements said wenge initially, but they settled for the lighter hued stuff).

Uwe

I didn't say you recommended it, only that what you said made me like it. My tastes being slightly off the beaten path anyway. If the SG-RI were long scale it might be OK, but the SG-Z appeals to me because it is different. And I do have a big rig with 15's that even the Rick with the bridge pickup soloed sounds good.
