Only hagstrom i would want would be the 8 string.
However that place is about 45 minutes from me. anyone want me to check it out let me know....
-
I like the instrument a lot, and I love off-beat brands.
But I am confident that the family budget has stretched far enough with two new basses in the last three months...and Christmas to boot.
Dang.

They're nothing special, if that's what you're asking. Lots of plastic and poor intonation.
-
I'm not surprised---I note the wooden bar bridge.
-
those are pretty much semi upholstered toys.
-
it does look like something you'd buy for the xBox...
my 'lil bro has a Hagstrom Ultra-Swede electric guitar - it's very, very nice...I'm confused about this bass entry.
-
I just think the appearance is cool - it's almost like they grafted a radio faceplate into the center of the guitar.
-
Hagstrom actually made some pretty nice basses, the ones we have posted here ain't the ones you would want.

I definitely like the way the Hagstrom 8 string sounded on the "Axis Bold as Love" album. I don't know how practical it would be to have something like that, though.

This Concord C-2 "DeLuxe" (http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-1960s-Hagstrom-Concord-4-String-Bass-Hollow_W0QQitemZ370480738754QQcategoryZ4713QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m8QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DMW%26its%3DC%26itu%3DUCC%26otn%3D5%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D6892068450864186441) is more what I would be looking for in a Hagstrom ......

I had a Hag 8 String from 1970 until about 5 years ago. It was a beautiful and unique instrument, but like you mentioned, not real practical, so I gave it up .
The hollow body Concord is a pretty nice bass but they also had a couple solid bodies in the late 60s-early 70s that were my favorites and they were cheap too. I can't recall the names, I have an old catalog around here somewhere that came with my 8 String that I have to find. There was a great sounding solid body that I saw Greg Lake use a few times that had a list price of something like $185. I played one at a couple of jam sessions back in the day and REALLY liked it. It seems like all anyone remembers from Hagstrom are their cartoonlike X Boxish creations. They really did make some other stuff that was really nice.

I was considering this one because I thought it was beautiful. Got nervous about the neck damage though.

hagstrom guitars have always been much better than any of their basses, which seems like an after thought.

Having owned an SG-type Hagstrom guitar (can't remember the model), I disagree. They had a rep for low action and substandard electronics. I ignored the warning of the music store owner who sold me one. Model for model, I don't think the guitars were any better than the basses.
-
I'd thought the Super Swede bass was very well made. I played one many years ago. A pretty rare bass.

Not a bad version. A very bouncy bassline on the original by Rutger Gunarsson.

They seem to be way more common in the US than in Europe, judging by what comes up on eBay.
I like the look of the HIIB, even if it has too many switches, but I'd have to find one for about half what they usually go for.

The name has been revived on a new range, including an 8-stringer, but they don't have the same appeal somehow.

Not sure I like the headstock, but the rest of it is good.
An interesting experiment would be to buy a new HB-4 and stick two of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280524407673&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) in it. Looks like they'd fit.

FYI, those pickups aren't from Bill Lawrence (Willi Stich) the man, but from his former business partner. Bill's pickups are here (http://wildepickups.com/).

That Sunburst one is the one I liked. List price on that was $195 back in 1970 (I found my Hagstrom catalog from that year). That was the cheapest bass they offered and my favorite of the bunch. Like my 8 String, they were loaded with tiny little switches that were very sensitive but if you kept them sprayed with a good cleaner /lube they weren't too bad.

Unfortunately for us, Hagstrom only made 356 of them.

Did you sell your Hagstrom collection?
-
Yes, I did Dave. But i've still got lots of photos that I took of each one of them.

Well, at least one was a lefty!

I always figured the speaker one was decent, as it was in the Mel Bay book when I was a kid. Then I played one. It is not horrible, just peculiar. The neck was like a Framus - tube-y.
I think I like their pickups on Guilds more than I like Guild-clone bodies on Vikings.
