Post by: Essential Tension on April 30, 2008, 04:29:06 PM
Anyone tried the Tech 21 Sansamp VT Bass yet?

There's a review at http://www.bassplayer.tv/ (http://www.bassplayer.tv/)

I can't run the video at work. I know Ed Friedland has been saying a lot of good things about them, and is actually using one on gigs. They're not cheap, though I suppose if it saves you buying an SVT, they're actually small change.

I was just reading about them the other night (I'm one of those horrible people who go to the coffee shop/bookstore and drink my coffee while not paying to read the magazines) and I too am pretty curious about this thing.

It will save you carrying the SVT too.  ;D

Has anyone tried the blonde tech21 pedal on bass? I used to like my Bassman 100 quite well and I liked the way it distorted.

This pedal is a FET based preamp of the "real deal"; they changed the tubes by FET's and biased em correctly to get the amp like character. Shame to say it won't be as dynamic as a real amp but will cover the sound of one.

Their bass version is very close to a DIY pedal called the "Flipster" as can be found here (http://www.runoffgroove.com/flipster.html)

Sounds nice - but I admit the SVT emulation reminds me of what I hear with my $30 Behringer BDI21 pedal when I set it at the recommended SVT emulation adjustment.

Might be worth a shot if you're really searching for an inexpensive SVT emulation.

On a guitar they seem to do a lot more for you. On a bass, they're nice....... but to me, no big deal. I still tweak  the EQ to get the sound I want and the emulator has very little to do with the final result.
My little Roland amp has emulation for most of my favorite amps including B-15, SVT and Acoustic 360 but the setting I almost always gravitate to is the Bassman , which is NOT  among my favorite amps. It seems to be a more neutral setting to begin with and then I add a little juice with the EQ. I can get pretty much  the same sound with any of the emulation settings but the Bassman  just seems to make a better starting point.
