Fender Basses / Re: Gold '82 limited edition Jazz
« on: December 14, 2012, 10:40:23 PM »
A lot of those early 80s white pickup jobs were real dogs. Even if this is one of the good ones, it's not worth near the asking price. Never heard of a limited edition like that, not to say it isn't so. It's not the standard bridge used on an 82 Jazz.
They made it, definitely. I remember seeing one for sale in late '82 at a local store. I think it was in the '82 fender catalog too, too lazy to check. It was the bass companion to the Gold Strat. The Gold Strat was  basically a standard "Smith Strat" with gold parts and some "brass age" hardware that Fender was selling as aftermarket parts at the time. Ditto the Gold Jazz Bass except for the 4-bolt neck and body-end truss rod adjustment. the above applies...Fender reverted to the early '66 style dots and binding fingerboards.

That one's definitely pretty rough, but sorta cool.

I rented a Kay for about a month, but this was the first bass (and amp) I really owned...

A Univox UB-250 was my first amp too. At the time, I had a brainstrom to get four of them instead of one decent amp...luckily, I didn't.

In 1974, I bought a brand new bass exactly like this Ibanez 2350b, except branded "Leonardo". (Note that the Ibanez has no logo in the catalog photo.) Probably Matsumoku made, construction was identical to a Univox Les Paul copy guitar. Pickups were stamped Maxon on the bottom. 29" scale. It sounded exacltly like crap!

$150 + tax in 1974...at the time, I could've bought a '60s Fender P or J bass in any color I wanted for not much more. After I had the LP bass for about a month, I found out that a brand new P Bass was about $250. Asked if I could exchange it (this store was a Mom & Pop shop...they weren't Fender dealers, but they had a slot head EB-3, EB-0L, and a Dan Armstrong bass on the wall until the early '80s because everything was sold for around list price) They said "Oh no, that was a SPECIAL ORDER". I can't blame them, it was. My friend ahd a black Univox LP copy and I had to have a matching bass. One born every minute, to quote P.T. Barnum...

Sold it a year later for $40. A few years ago I found an identical one branded Pearl. Kept it a few months and then remembered why I didn't keep the Leonardo.

Gibson Basses / Re: Vintage Guitar 2012 Price Guide

About a week ago, I bought the new VG Price Guide, I was looking through the Gibson bass section & noticed the photo of the EB-1 had my basement wall in the background. They had chopped it out of a photo I submitted to the VG Readers Gallery a number of years back. Out of curiosity, I checked last year, & the picture of my EB-0 was chopped out of the same photo for that issue. Here's the photo.

Haha, on page 312 of the 2011 VG Price Guide there's a pic of my 1965 Candy Apple Red Jazz Bass that I had on eBay (didn't sell.) They lifted it without asking my permission. I had the same experience, hey, that's my basement wall!

There's no money above the 5th fret anyway...
True! Not for almost any musician. At least not anymore.

If I had a job...and maybe some money...I'd buy it...and have the neck reset. Looks nice. Some of those early NR's had this problem. The white one that Tom Petersson has was also mine and when I got it, it was Candy apple red and needed a neck reset because it had no pitch to it. Plus it had a crack by the E tuner. After all that work was done, It played and sounded great!!! Ask Tom!! He's got 4 of my old basses!!
That's it in a nutshell...the job thing. Lot of that going around, of course, and it rolls downhill.

Interesting about the C.A.R.. T-Bird. I think Gibson's name for that color was Sparkling Bugundy. Usually the back of the neck was natural on S.B. instruments.  I've seen A '66 Flying V, EB-2, several Melody Makers and M.M. basses in that color. It makes total sense that Gibson would have made some Firebirds and T Birds in that color, but I've never seen one. I don't think it was an official 'Bird color, so it'd be rare. Must've been a cool bass!

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: Bass combo amps
« on: July 23, 2011, 04:24:31 PM »
I've used a Peavey Data Bass for 20 years.  ok, I know, Peavey, eccch. But they made a few great sounding bass amps, the Mark IV head is cool too.

Other than changing out the stock Black Widow for an Eminence Kapa 15C, (they blow the BWs sooner or later) it's never let me down. Big stages or small, very satisfied.
They are not perfect, though. A lot of guys might want more treble (although it's enough for me) and an extension speaker jack would've been nice. If you want to use the pre/post volumes for distortion, NO WAY...a Data Bass will NOT distort no matter what. Maybe on 10, but I wouldn't want to be in the room with it! And pretty heavy, thanks too particle board construction...

Pretty sure these are Class D amps, but I always found it to be very dynamic.

I'm curious to try the Peavey VB-3 Class D all tube 300 watt amp. It's a head, no combo version available to my knowledge. Never saw one in a store. Maybe they discontinued them already.

The stores near me only carry LCD stuff, no Orange, Genz-Benz, etc. One shop does carry some high end stuff, but that never worked for a rock sound IMO. Not even any PEAVEY dealers!

What about number 1 and number 4 then??
Yeah, but like I said, no mid '60s Fenders.

44
An extremely strange list. There are no '60s Fender Jazz or P basses on the list at all. Even a sunburst mid '60s Fender bass would be worth more than some of the basses on the list.

I swear, if I made a guitar out of some of the solid hardwoods in my kitchen, that wood would suddenly be endowed with magical vintage qualities. It would stop its seasonal movement and start "breathing", it would become drier and lighter and have superior tonal qualities.
Another factor with necks made of maple is how long the rough cut neck blanks are allowed to sit before final shaping.

Many years ago, Steve Hayes, a local luthier highly knowledgeble about woodworking told me that you can build a mahogany neck in a day but maple necks need to sit for at least 6 months in order for the stresses in the wood to work out. Otherwise, the neck will move after it's finished.
