Parts is parts, here's a Jazzmutt I just built with stuff I've had lying around for a few years. Fender Japan body, 'Genuine Fender Replacement' neck, DiMarzios, etc.  Plays and sounds fantastic.

(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/ME/P1040396_zpsa1b44557.jpg) (http://s976.photobucket.com/user/cata1d0/media/ME/P1040396_zpsa1b44557.jpg.html)

Anybody can build just about any Fender he wants, all sorts of vendors selling the components.  Not possible with ThunderBirds.

Digging the way they look as well as sound with EXL165s.  I also have a set on a Warmoth body and a P/J set on another.

Yeah, I know...that is why I wanted a 1964....not a repro or a copy or a parts built.....no offense...just my taste....quit my band Monday due to my Drummer's Mental Illness and my Guitar player's ego...just felt like selling it all and buying a 1964 Jazz because I started out by listening to Hendrix.....Robin Trower.....Not sure what I am going to do...

Good 60's Jazz Basses will ruin you. When I worked at GC, a guy brought in a '64 for trade that had been completely refinished in solid red polyester: neck, body, headstock and fretboard (think Larry Graham's white Moon- only fire engine red) and had a set of the old Seymour Duncan active Jazz pickups with the switches on the face as well as all replacement hardware. It STILL played and sounded like a monster. Even with verifying the neck, GC wouldn't do the trade and all the guy wanted was $600 for it. I didn't have the money or I would own that bass.

is any bass???    assuming one can afford it the only question is in 5 years will it be worth 15,000 or 25,000.   A high end alembic or fodera would sell for 15000 or less but the j bass would be 25000.....  both assumptions ignoring any economic meltdown again...

Use the force, Baz... ;)

If the deal feels right to you, and the "knowledge" that it is a '60's Jazz and not an RI (which was Scott's recommendation), and knowing that (as much as I can from what I know of you from this side of the pond) your musical equipment collection can be somewhat a revolving door, then you are the only person that can answer this conundrum...

The only thing I will say is... it's not a '64... why settle for less when trading such rare instruments...?

That's right.

I wouldn't do it. You wanted a '64 specifically, but this one is a '65. They might exactly the same but it's not what you wanted.
Keep the Tbird!

Ok. I'm out....Had a weak moment there...it's NOT a '64....if it WAS a '64...I may have broke...If it was an early '60's slab board, I'd do it without hesitation...I'm gonna go after that '71 Tele bass neck on Ebay...and build me a Frankenstein!!! I hope!!

higher rated. the early sixties jazz bass has been iconic almost as soon as it left the factoy. while a thunderbird is just a thunderbird. sorry...

For the life of me, I've never underestood pricing of '60s Fenders, they cranked 'em out by the thousands and I'm supposed to belive each and every one of them is some kind of magical bass - I ain't buying it  8)

As cornball as it sounds, I've never played a bad one. IMO, it was the sustained quality in the mass quanities that won Fender the marketplace and that's why the CBS Fenders were so poorly received: corporate cut-corners stuck out immediately. If I were Baz, I'd still hold on to the T-Bird, though. The things about 64 Fender Jazz Basses is that many people have successfully copied them. Gibson can't even make consistent T-Birds.

Lull had one at his shop for awhile (he was selling it for a customer), I played it thru an SWR Redhead for about 30 minutes one afternoon while waiting for him to finish up one of my 'Birds - It was a nice bass, sounded fine - didn't speak to me tho, just not my thing I guess.

Baz, if you can find a '62 replacement neck from the late 90's, it's seriously the best Jazz neck I've ever played. I don't have an extra one anymore but they come up now and then on ebay and they're beautiful. Slab board, comfortable profile. I'll bet you could build a killer Jazz starting with that and you'd still have your bird.

Years ago I had a Pre-CBS (no idea what year) Jazz...bought it for $125 (was a long, long time ago)...also had a Pre-CBS Musicmaster...

They sounded good...So does a really good CIJ Jazz or MIM Jazz...

I'm 56, been gigging since about age 13...a fifteen year old bass can sound really good...(I do think the wood ages in...but then I think finish can influence sound...heresy around here.)

My point is, find a good player whether it be a $250 MIM Precision like me or whatever it is and play music.  The instrument doesn't make the player...your skills and artistry make the player. The music is inside of you, not the instrument.

...and though it may sound like heresy, the "Roadworn" series of MIM Fenders REALLY does cop the total vibe of 60's Jazz Basses for a fraction of the cost. Dare to reinvent yourself without buying into "only old is good" marketing, especially if money's tight. I'll put my MIM '62 reissue up against the real thing ANY day. It was heavily customized before I bought it, and by not spending an arm and a leg, you can buy a nice complete instrument, really make it your own, and not lose an extremely rare an valuable Gibson to a whim that you WILL regret later.

I owned a beautiful mojoed to heck '66 P bass that I thought was a keeper.  Then I bought a Nash as a backup, and the Nash looked, played and sounded just as nice as the '66, so I sold the '66, bought 2 Nashes, a new refrigerator, and an engagement ring.  Bill Nash does wonders with his "parts" basses - they feel every bit as comfortable to play as any vintage Fender I've played.

LMAO!  Yes they are. . . for all of the same reasons  ;D

I'm a Fender player who loves the look and sound (when I had to front a band) of Gibbies but I can't stand the way the necks feel to me.
I still have my first bass bought used in 1965 a C neck Precision.  I guess learning on a neck that size just makes everything else seem odd.

I will say that not all of the old Fenders I have played sound great, they seem more consistent than most other brands.

I was looking at a EB3 on ebay..............seller thinks it's a '67 it's more like a '65 and only wants $2,500 for it and I'm thinking I should buy this it's a good deal! Back in the early 90's I bought a '67 for $125.00 wish I still had it. Or that '65 I paid $850 for in 2005 Oh Yeah!

I did own a Custom shop Relic '64 Jazz bass for less than a month a few years back. Did a show with Diamond Rexx....It did sound INCREDIBLE!!! and played great...but it wasn't old......it was fake old.....So i took it back and got my thunderbird back....only because i onbly had one t bird at the time...But...EVERYONE of my friends is telling me to KEEP the bird....so...Like I said. I'm out...UNLESS...it was a slab board...then it would be worth it...even though they made so many Fenders...they did make LESS of the Jazz basses....Fenders ARE the industry standard....and versatile....But then again... I can play ANYTHING on a bird......
But just look at a Reverse Thunderbird............

I got to fondle a '64 T-bird IV a little bit Friday night. A Who tribute band opened for us, and the bass player opened the back of his van, tossed aside the Epi explorer that was back there (no case or anything), and opened up a case with a gorgeous '64 inside. I didn't get to plug it in or anything, but I played it a little bit in the parking lot. Light weight, unbroken, and beautiful! He did a great job on stage too. A little less aggressive than JAE in his attack, but all the parts were there. Funny thing was - as we talked, I realized I had met this guy about 5 years ago when he was in a Stones cover band. I had my white Bachbird at the time, and he was all over me about that bass. Apparently he owns like a half dozen Bachs now. LOL! I brought my "big gun" to the gig - '74 SVT, 2x10/1x15 cab, and 8x10 cab - and this guy rolls in with (2) Sunn 2x15, (2) Sunn 1x18, and (2) Colosseum heads.

Don't do it, life situations change, band situations change but 64 T-Birds don't come down the pike every day. Friend of mine has a 65 Jazz, was under the bed for all it's life except for two years, I don't like it you don't have to fight with it to get a good sound like you do with most other basses. ;D

Yeah but rather than sell any of the birds...sell the Hamer FB VIII 8 string ....Any sentimentality I ever had for it being TP's is gone since he is not a nice guy to me anymore. So...I may as well sell it for something that would be cool.

Yeah  I know...But when someone Burns me Like TP did..It's easy to dump one of his basses. No Longer is he my Bass Hero. Never will be EVER again. Besides...If I can sell it...buy the Jazz bass I want...maybe have a little extra cabbage...I can always have one of those aluminum basses made...Or NOT..Or maybe I will never play multistring basses Ever again because of HIM!

I firmly belive you'd regret it Baz, you're your own person, that's a unique bass, far more so than the jazz.

Funny. Just about 15 minutes ago, My wife says "Why don't you sell a couple of basses and we can pay off the credit cards?" Then that escalated into...well...you know.....HOW many times have you guys heard that one?

(I feel kinda silly giving you guys advice here, but here goes...)
Hah. If I had a quarter for every time I hear, "Why do you need more than one guitar? You should sell the other ones so we can XXXXX (go on vacation, get Iphones, pay off a bill, etc) I could have bought a "name brand" bass instead of what I have.
Selling my $99 a piece gear wouldn't hurt as much as a beautiful, rare vintage piece that you may never see another one again if you change your mind later. I can always find Hondos and Ibanezes for spare change, but something they only ever made a couple hundred of, out of wood they can't get any more of, especially in really nice shape is just about ir-replaceable. I know, send it to me to "hold on to" for a while, to see if you can be without it! Hee hee.

In the end, it's all just stuff.  I've had some really nice basses, and most of what I bought as "second-rate" basses back in the '70s fetch nice prices now.  I had a few Epiphone Newports, a Guild M-85, a '66 T-Bird NR II - all of which only cost me about $200 each.
You guys will probably cringe when I tell you that I sold a '64 Precision for $400 because I wanted to fix up my basement and put up shelving.

I miss some of the basses I've sold, but when they are just sitting in the case in a closet, it seems like a waste to me.  Basses should be played and heard.  That was part of why I sold my Embassy to Mark F.  He took it out and played, and got to appreciate what a nice bass it was.

You are ABSOLUTELY right, Scott. But I'm not mad...I just don't Look Up to TP any more......He let me down. I admit, using a photo of Him playing the Futura 8 string was a lame idea...but  being unemployed and having a Mortgage, I panicked....panicked because I thought we were going to lose our home....I should have asked him first. I made a mistake. I have tried countless times to call, email, snail mail...even brought my son to see Trick in Rockford last year....He came up to meet him but smited me.....I mean does he want a public apology?? I'm sorry, Tom, I f'ed up.

I did play a candy apple red 1966 Jazz bass with a 1963 neck. NICE Neck. Definitely cool........Tone was different.....NOT a thunderbird....But NICE....then I held the 1961 slab board jazz bass....oh my gosh...the neck was so thin...even thinner than my '64 T bird....Oh man....but not worth $18,000.00!!!!!!!!!

When you hold a grudge the only one you're hurting is you.  The other guy doesn't give a shit...took me a long time to learn that...Peace. BTW...I still maintain you could find a trashy MIM Jazz that will do every thing a vintage one will...for a lot less...

True. I have a couple myself that do exactly that. I also have an SX '75-ish style Jazz that just kills. The recipe for Fender Fried Chicken has been out long enough for nearly anybody to make it taste just like the original.

Some do it a lot better than others. Everything is made to a price point.

Also true - and some people are more sensitive to the nuances of construction and sound than others. This much I can tell you, though... I've gone into GC or wherever far too many times and grabbed new Fenders (US included) off the rack that were literally unplayable - poor fit and finish, fret dressing that would slice up your hands and necks so bowed you could shoot an arrow from them. The $160 SX came directly out of its cardboard box and has gotten nothing more than a set of strings. Even the intonation was almost dead on. That doesn't mean that the SX is a better instrument or that Fenders are junk. It means, unfortunately, that the odds of getting a dud are far greater than we are led to believe - regardless of whose name is on the headstock. It also means that cheap instruments aren't as "cheap" as they used to be. Much of the time the difference in sound comes down to electronics and hardware, and those can be upgraded at a relatively minimal cost. For me, money is too tight these days to be an elitist when it comes to gear.

BTW, Fender has quietly added Chinese made instruments to the main line and are charging MIM prices for them. They're good instruments and definitely worth it, but you can literally get the same instrument for half the price if you don't mind having "Squier" on the headstock.
