I wouldn't worry about ownership history too much. A pawnbroker license is a license to steal, as the very old saying goes. That could've been in an attic or closet for 40 years. Some old guy got it appraised around 1990 and thinks he got top dollar maybe. If it clears police reports, it's theirs. They know what it's worth so overpricing it gets them a great bit of advertising.

My vote - as someone who loves old EB's with banjo tuners - is avoid them like the f#cking plague. They don't work. The tension of a typical bass string yanks the post so it will pull from the internal gear. The teeth slip and it detunes. On a 30" scale you have to use the light lower tension strings. I would want an oldie to have them. I would never scratch build using them.

If you want to retrofit an old one without reaming it out you can use Grover Imperials. Same size shaft and ferrules but beefier guts.

I'm optimistic on this pig. Sure it has a busted headstock - it's a thunderbird.  So,you get an epi bird, saw off the sides, take off what's left here, glue em on, paint and go.

30 years ago radio shack used to sell this package of button magnets. I think it was for guys who wanted to build their kits or stick Family Circus comic strips on the fridge. I bought them and stuck them on the bottom of a Japanese pup's pole pieces in a Kent bass. It did give it a bit more oomph.

I wrote to Rotosound 20 years back to ask if they still made them or had a box in a warehouse.  They sent me a letter back, and a catalog with a sticker.  I wish they'd make them again.

Instead of a regular bass string, where you have a round wire wrapped around a thinner inner core string ( or flat metal or nylon tape around the same for flats and tapes respectively) you have an inner core of several very light strings ( like a bunch of guitar .008 or .009 strings). They have a low tension rubbery vibe and they sound a bit different but not in any bad way. They were expensive and hard to find, back when Rotos were kind of unusual vs Fender, LaBella or GHS.

..I finally found my second set of these.  I bought my first set at Rayburn Music in Boston in their bargain bin - which was never a bargain - and haven't been able to find another set since.  Thanks to fleabay, and looking on there for 15 years or so, I found one.  Now I have to decide which bass to stick em on.

My local hardware redid their lighting fixtures a few years back and were giving their old 1940-50's  era fluorescent fixtures, so I grabbed a few. All the inside wiring was black and white cloth covered wire, all nice and cooked for 50 years. Just like cracking open a vintage Fender, except I have enough to rewrire a dozen or more.

It's been eons since I've touched one but I don't recall there being too dang much difference between a Klira and a Hofner. My buddy had one and I owned a Hofner. His had a control plate that was metal? I thought there were bolt on necks to them as well. That's a nice looking body too.

I have a friend who works for GC. Apparently they have sent out reps to retrofit new unsold Gibsons with regular tuners.

Interesting.

I had the single pickup Peter Tork.  It was a short or med scale, but with the tailpiece you could put long scale strings on it.  The bass supertron was different than the guitar one.  The guitar had several "blades" stuck together for polepieces, where the bass was a solid piece that had a ridged top.  The thing recorded wonderfully.  Sounded beautiful.  I sold it about 25 years ago, and the guy traded it back to me about two weeks ago.  I have to ship it though, so I haven't got it, but I will sometime in the next month, provided I don't drop dead.  I got it from the original owner and had the warranty and tags, but I seemed to have lost them.  I passed on several Country Gent/Nick Lowe basses way back.  I couldn't bring myself to pay more than $200 for one when I could get an EB-2 or a Guild for $150-200.
