The Bass Zone / Anyone else have a gig this last weekend?
« on: August 09, 2010, 05:33:35 AM »
We have been playing out quite a bit recently. Between the band and the wife I have been the proverbial "one legged man at a butt kickin' contest".

Our show Saturday night was much better than the one last Friday even though our warm up group canceled 3 hours before the show. (That should tell you just how crappy the previous show was) Couldn't be helped and they are good guys, we will play with them again.

Anyway, I drug out the Les Paul bass for the first time in a long time and it sounded great through my SVT and two 15's.

Someone bought us all shots of Frangelico after I announced over the microphone I wanted a shot of "that Mrs. Butterworth".   ;D

Gibson Basses / To Gold Top or not to Gold Top...
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:17:05 AM »
That is the question.

I can't decide if I like my Les Paul bass or not. Here is a bad picture of me with it about a year ago...

I think I would be more into it if it were a gold top and not the honey plain top it is now.

My questions are;

What is the collector value of this piece now, of course, who knows what it will be in the future.

Did Gibson ever offer this as a Gold Top?

What say ye ladies and Gentlemen?

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / More than a box
« on: June 17, 2010, 07:30:55 PM »
I don't know if this should go here, since it is a project or in the amps area since, one day, it will be part of my amp.

This humble, void free, 3/4 birch ply-wood box will one day be my killa-dilla 2x15 Wonder Cabinet...

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Glutton for punishment

I don't know why I seek out these basket case projects, sink way to much money and time into them only to play them once or twice and start all over again.

Be that as it may, here I am again. Only thins time I've decided to document from the beginning on the off chance that it turns out as nice as the last one. My completely reworked 76 Kramer Aluminum neck.

My new project began life as a BC Rich Platinum Warlock. I bought it used from a G.C. and with shipping and everything it cost me a hundred bucks.

One look and you will see why, I guess that if you screw more metal into your bass it is better for playing metal...

I had secretly prayed for this to be damaged in shipping to make things even more challenging, Looks like I still have my work cut out for me. I wonder why the P.O. decided to drill holes in it?

Hey y'all,

A while back I was mentioning that I had ordered a GFS rail humbucker to use in a Kramer bass project I was working on.

Well, it's in and I'm really pleased with the results.

I waxed it into a blank chrome cover from Stew-Mac and I think it looks every bit as good as the Rio Grande Pit-Bulls... I can't compare the sound.

It sounds pretty mean through my SVT... I'm running 15s so it's got a real old school flavor.

It is important to remember that this isn't a bass I'm going to be playing a lot so the look was far more important than the tone.

Gibson Basses / For sale "Hey man that bass is playing you"
« on: August 18, 2009, 02:10:12 PM »
Hey Y'all,

I'm going to have to sell my Epiphone Explorer bass, I just can't seem to fall in love with the gigantic (to me) size of the thing.

I thought I'd see if there was any interest here before I put it on ebay.

It is one of the Korena models from the 90's, everyone here probably knows the specs but it has a set neck, 34" scale etc, etc, etc.

I am the second owner and it's in pretty damn good shape no real dings or goobers, I have the humungus case for it too.

I'd like to get around 450 for it.

BTW I see these have been reissued, my GC has a black one. Talk about a bad time to sell...

Gibson Basses / Good bye Aerodyne Jazz... Hello Korina Explorer.
« on: July 15, 2009, 04:33:28 AM »
Hey Y'all,

In an ongoing effort to have fewer Fender basses I traded my Aerodyne Jazz for an Epiphone Explorer last night. Now I'm down to one "keeper" Jazz and some parts bodies and necks.

I think I did pretty well on the trade and I'm digging the new bass. I'm going to fire it up at band practice tonight.

It's lighter than I thought but it is one long son of a gun. I may tune it down a step and capo at the 2nd fret.

It is not Korina all the way through but rather a laminate on the top and back, anyone know, or have a guess, what is in the middle?

I'll post some pics tonight.

Gibson Basses / When...if ever refinish question
« on: March 12, 2009, 03:04:30 PM »
Hey Y'all,

I have been thinking about refinishing my late 90's Les Paul bass, the solid body style.

It is a plain top with the "Honey" finish and I'm thinking of sending it back to Gibson for a "Gold Top Treatment".

Is this a bad idea?

There is nothing wrong with the finish right now, I just think it could be a little cooler .

What say ye'

The Outpost Cafe / What it is?
« on: October 30, 2008, 02:12:13 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have been lurking for a few days...what a great forum.

T-bird 1958 helped me out with a Gibson question on another forum, and recommended this place, thanks for having me.

Just thought I should introduce myself before I go to posting on a bunch of established threads like some kind of FNG!

I am currently play bass with a Colorado rock band called Hawk Attack, if you want to check us out please stop by our myspace page... www.myspace.com/hawkandroll

I also have a page I call the Bass Alliance of Colorado, some of you may already be members... I know T-bird is.

I attended Roberto-Venn in 1989 and I love all the great project pages you have going.

Thanks again for having me... I guess you could say that the doctor is in!
(Man that sounds dorky... ;D )
