Title: show your short-scales!
Post by: hieronymous on July 26, 2008, 04:49:32 PM
I don't think this has been done here, and with all the Gibsonites here it shouldn't be too hard - so let's see your short-scale basses! I'm thinking around 30" scale length. Less is fine of course, and let's consider 32" medium scale.

I'll get it started with my most recent bass - an Alembic Signature Standard Stanley Clarke 5-string:

It was originally made BEADG but I put EADGC strings on it and love it! It's definitely heavy, but I expect that from an Alembic.

OK, so what'cha got!

Incoming Aria Diamond project bass - not here yet, but 30" scale:

Rogue VB-100, which is a great bass with Labella Hofner flats:

1970's Univox 335-copy:

My Epi EB-0 hanging next to my Kay KB-2, both 30" scale:

Dang, I have a lot of short scale basses.  But then, I have a few 34" scale too...

NICE Alembic 5er, Harry!  That is gorgeous!!

I started playing short scale after my ten year hiatus from music.  I had always wanted an EB, so my EB-2D got me started down that path once I got back in the saddle.  Now it seems the short brown (and red) basses are starting to multiply...

I can't seem to find the pics of my Triumph, so I'll post that later.  Also, several of my current projects are shorties:  Vox HB, Epi Sheraton, Guild M-85 and Guild Starfire III.  Three of these are guitar body conversions to short scale bass.  Opps, I forgot my 66 EB-2 restoration as well.  Damn, I gotta get busy!

I used to have another 3000 (and a 3001) which i bought for 450 dollars. The dollar was a lot more expensive then. Now that would be 300 euros but that time it was 600. i sold it for that amount too.

It is original.  The lighting makes it look a lot brighter than it really is, though it is lighter than some I've seen.

here's mine..80 something Vantage Flying V       I have a dimarzio P. in another bass that will find its way here soon.i bought this for $40 with the body broken in half.i fixed it the break but it was still f***ed up 'cause lots of wood was missing, the ends of the V were also busted.this thing was thrown around quite a bit! :P so i fixed it using snowboard epoxy  8) (super strong and easy to sand) it was so ugly. :o :P i decided to pay tribute to my first bass so i covered it in skateboard stickers. i'm gonna put a coat of poly on top so they don't peel off.

I just recently found out how fun short scales are.  I only own one of them so far... and epi eb0.  I'm THINKING of getting a short scaled ibanez semi hollow, but I'm still undecided about it.   My wife inadvertently got me into short scale.. She started playing on a 34 back in february and got frustrated with it because she had trouble with the fret spacing.  She wound up pretty much giving it up until a month or so ago, we went into GC for something to do and she picked up an eb0 and fell in love with the way it felt.  She wound up putting in a lot of extra hours of work the week she got it, and I couldn't put the thing down, so I had to get me one too :]    Here they are  HIS and HERS

What's the story about the green one with the elongated pick guard?

Title: Re: show your short-scales!
Post by: poomwah on July 29, 2008, 02:05:39 PM
ahhh the green epi :]   I couldnt' stand the factory finish so I did some sanding and spraying... It's actual testors model paint, the color is called Lime Ice Metallic.  VERY deep metal flake that doesn't show up in pics.  The pickguard was extended to cover extra controls that I added after adding a bridge pickup from an epi eb-3.  The pickguard sits on top of a piece of 1/8 inch plexi with frosted edges.  The plexi is drilled for green leds (still waiting on that order to get here).  So once that's done, there will be a 9volt battery in the control compartment powering the leds.  Flip a switch and the ege of the pickguard SHOULD glow green.  Time will tell :]

Thornton,

See the post of Bert. He has the same Klira as the one on the right. Normally you see the doublecut (your one on the left) or the violin bodyshape, but the right one (and Bert's one) seem to be combinations of both. What about that?

Chris the two Klira's above are very unique. The one on the left is a Twen Star 162-I and the one on the right is a Twen Star 162-II. The next version Klira made was called a Twen Star 356. It had a Violin body, identical to Hofner's 500/1. The Twen Star 162-II was a pre Twen Star 356 "quasi" combination which incorporated half of the standard violin style body on the upper body along with the cutaway of the 162-I on the lower body. In addition to their unique body shapes, the bound "cat's eyes" sound holes add to the design of all Twen Star models.

But even though the two designs are very similar, Klira made the Twen Star 162-II a 1/2" thinner than the 162-I.

FWIW, the fronts and backs are made from a single piece of German Spruce on the basses pictured. Klira's sound great and they're very well made.

Hi shorties

Actually I don't like playing the short scale basses but as a Gibson fan and due to it's fantastic good look I got myself a Triumph some years ago. Posting a couple of pictures, the condition of the bass is quite OK, some few dings and some belt buckle wear. The hard sell case is pretty beaten up though.

Is that a John Birch?
Title: Re: show your short-scales!
Post by: godofthunder on August 02, 2008, 06:20:21 AM
John Birch is close ! it is a Jaydee buit by John Diggens who worked at JB in the 70's it is a exact replica of Jim Lea's (of Slade) one of John Birch that was made in '76 to replace his much modded EB3 that was stolen from the John Birch shop. JD used Jim Lea's bass as a pattern and even got Jimmy to sign it for me ! I was supposed to go over to England and pick up the bass and meet Jim and JD but I was unable to do so. It was a big thrill for me to have Jim so involved in the project. A lot of really great people helped make this happen My friend Stu over in the UK pointed me in the right direction and even provided a vintage JB bridge for the project. JD came up with a pair of vintage Birch pickups. It is a wondeful piece of work and one of my favorite basses, bloody loud and ballsy with it's own on board distortion. Chris the two Klira's above are very unique. The one on the left is a Twen Star 162-I and the one on the right is a Twen Star 162-II. The next version Klira made was called a Twen Star 356. Yeah, it's a one-off that Mosrite made.  I've seen others online that Dave and the guys have found, so it's not one of a kind, but it surely is rare and unusual.  I'm trying to figure out if it's really playable or not.

Hey, what strings do you use on that 25" bass?  What's the measurement from the ball to the edge of the wrap on top?

The only strings that I've found that work almost OK are these.

Same strings I use on my Allen Woody bass. Still have to cut them down to go on the Corsair.

So, life's too short for long scale basses, eh? ;)

Great thread, great looking basses guys.

Only one of my 10 basses is a short-scale - a '78 Fender Musicmaster, which I gave to my son, so now another '78 is on its way here, this time an Olympic White.

Not mine but my bassplayer's Gretsch Bariton-jet which I modified for him by removing the Bigsby. It sounds really good though, big powerful sound.

Which is the same instrument as my Bassplayer's but I'm pretty sure you're not using it the same way he does: byt using an Ibanez "Seventh heaven" distortion stompbox and a Laney Solid state 300 watt head and 2x15 cab. It sound brutal.

I was reading on Talkbass about these long scale 6 string bass / baritone guitars. I guess the Fender IV was one of these?

The Fender VI was (is) 30". It's a 6-string bass (tuned E-E) and not a baritone (bari's are typically 27"-28" scale and tuned B-B or A-A, somewhere between bass and guitar).

AFAIK the first 6-string bass was the Danelectro in 1959, next was the Gibson EB6 (1960) and then Hofner 500/10 and Fender VI (1961; the Fender VI was the first solid body 6-string bass). All were short scale (30"). Rickenbacker's 4005/6 (1967) was standard Ric long scale (33 1/2").

I love Hamers double cuts. I've got a 93 Special Humbucker thats great and just traded a 92 P90 Special for a 1976 Fender Rhodes 73 Suitcase Piano that has the 4X12 cabinet with the built in amp. The P90's made that guitar scream.
I want to order a black double cut bass to go with the white one pictured above.
Here's my latest short scale. My camera sucks as does my picture taking ability but this one sounds good through the old Music Man guitar amp.

Video of my Triumph (it's a lecture on Buddhism, bass comes in part-way through):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h62Wo1DRC2E

And a couple of pics of the set-up:

The bass went through the Fulltone Bass Drive, then I split the signal, to the amp and also into my MBox/ProTools set up. I recorded my voice out of the PA on an old MD recorder, then overdubbed the nice clean signals of the bass and voice onto the video.

Any new short-scales in the house? Post 'em!

Got a new one - '71 Guild solidbody fretless M-85:

Considering putting in Dark Stars, need to figure out what to do about the bottom strap pin, plus it's missing the original truss-rod cover. But it's a fun bass!

Here it is with some of my other shorties:

L-R: '75 Alembic Series I doubleneck (the fretted neck is 30"); my wife's Allen Woody; '67 Starfire I Bass; '71 M-85 solidbody

The new Guild looks great!

... need to figure out what to do about the bottom strap pin

I use those Dunlop straplocks on my stuff, and at one point bought a bunch of buttons en-masse (Allparts sells just the buttons - so you don't have to buy the whole Dunlop kit every time) to retrofit to my basses.  My JS-II was a bit of a pain because of that strap pin in the body:

Just wrap a cloth around the button, grab it with some pliers, and carefully and gently twist it side to side - should wiggle right out of there.  It leaves a huge hole behind, so what I did was get a wood dowel from the hardware store, sand it to fit (the hole had sort of a conical shape to it - so I tried to match that and snug it up), and then used a bit of wood glue to glue the dowel in there.  Once that dried, I drilled it out for the Dunlop button (just a normal size wood screw) and once installed, the button and little felt washer that I use actually covered it all up.  It was kind of a pain to deal with, but it has held up well.

Thanks Joe! Actually, the strap pin is missing - there's just that big hole. Guess I'll need to go dowel hunting...

Thinking maybe I could get a wooden truss rod cover custom made? The pickup selector switch isn't original either - this is one of the instruments that showed up with a red die (as in dice) instead of the original metal bat. So I'm not worried about keeping it correct/vintage/etc. I see this bass as a player.

Oh- I didn't know it was missing the button altogether.  If it helps, I can find/send you my old one.  Still - long term its probably safer to dowel it if you want something secure.  The button itself on the original is kind of small, and I had a near miss with the strap slipping off of it once.

The guy that I bought my old Roland bass from had built a TRC for it out of maple.  Looks decent, and covers the hole.  I don't have a close-up of it, but you can kind of see it here:  http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k125/0chromium0/forums/roland/DSCF0100.jpg

You could also check w/Hans Moust on LTG (or here http://www.guitarchives.nl/guitarsgalore/) to see if he has an original TRC.  I've seen them pop up on Ebay from time-to-time too.

I'd like to find the metal switch bat for my pickup selector too.  Mine has a plastic Gibson tip on it that doesn't quite fit.
