what is the difference between these? and which pots should i use? tone or vol.

250k are generally used for single coil pickups and 500k for humbuckers.  500k will allow more high frequencies through.   most often the same values are used for volume and tone, but not always.

I use 250k pots for  tone and vol on single coils.  On humbuckers, I've gone to 500k for vol and 250k on tone controls and it's improved the sound, to my ears, of my basses.  By dropping the tone controls to 250k, I bleed off some of the highs and I'm a thumpin' bass guy, so it works better for my tastes.

What capacitor value would you recommend?  Right now for my Fenderbird project I have 500K pots for both volume and tone, and a .22 cap.  From what I have found, Thunderbirds generally have 500 volume pots and 250 tone pots with a .047 cap.  I want plenty of high end available.  Your thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.  I am using Seymour Duncan Custom Shop wound 60's Thunderbird pickups.

I have a set in my Orville '76 clone, in Greatdealz67 NOS covers. They're fabulous IMHO. Pickups ( the sound that is ) are highly subjective, but these have the right amount of " growl " to my ears, although I find them much more sensitive to height adjustment ( distance from the pickup to the strings ) than the stock Orvs. I believe DrBassman has a set also. Seymour winds them himself ( mine are signed ) and it took quite a while to get them. If I had any complaint about them it would be that they were wired with a " modern " four conductor wire and not the vintage braided wire ( to be fair to SD I didn't specify vintage wire ) but it seems a little odd to me to do a vintage pup and not use vintage style wire ( although you would certainly have more wiring options with the four conductor wire )
