Fav Underated Bassist?
« on: May 30, 2008, 07:09:16 PM »

Who Do You Most Wanna See On The Cover of a Bass Mag?

Some of you will probly say ME....meaning you.

I wanna say Me, of course, but I don't deserve it yet.
So my vote is for Phil Kennemore of Y&T.
This is long, long overdue for Phil. He ROCKS!!!!

I have to go with:

Gary Thain - Uriah Heep
Dee Murray - Elton John

Wouldn't disagree so far esp. Gary Thain, that guy could sure play. Had tix to see them two weeks after he was killed. Think my vote goes to Pete Way from UFO, flashy with his Thunderbirds and striped pants, but always a BASS player.

I'd have to say Paul Goddard of Atlanta Rhythm Section.  He played with a pick and had some tasty lines.

Good call!  His solo on "Another Man's Woman" just floored me.  Sounded more like Chris Squire than what you'd expect from ARS.

John Deacon (Queen)

A lot of great Dutch bass players, who're only famous here.

Damon Minchella (Weller, OCS, Who)
Andy Bell (Oasis)
Mani
Hookey

The last four are quite famous, but not really bassist bassists.

That is a great solo.  I do love Dee Murray (saw him with E.J. on the Breaking Hearts tour) and Gary Thain too.  I used to stare at that photo of Gary playing that old Jazz Bass inside the gatefold of Uriah Heep Live.

I loved Peter Giles playing on Crimson's "In the Wake of Poseidon", and with Ian McDonald and Michael Giles on the "McDonald and Giles" LP:

Dunno if Tim Bogert counts as underrated, but if so - he'd be another one of my favorites:

+1 on that!  Sweet Lorraine is an alltime fave U.H. song!

Tony Visconti's bass playing on Bowies 'The man Who Sold The World" doesn't get enough recognition IMHO. Trevor Bolder who played on the next few Bowie albums and also with Uriah Heep is an under appreciated player as well.

This forum aside, Mel Shacher should get more attention than he does.
