SG Bass Crack

Would this be a relic ?  ;)  On the day of Andy Fraser's passing a crack surfaced in the neck/headstock joint of my SG .......... 8)





Any one ever seen this before ? And if so, will it end up in a vintage Gibson headstock break ? Just wondering .....

I had a similar issue with the 20/20 neck I just replaced, I always wondered what the cause could have been. I assumed it may have been hit against something rather hard. The maple being pretty tough, the finish cracked before it did. The unusual nut this bass has, consists of two leveling screws on each end & a center jack screw to raise & lower it. The strings are fed through holes in the nut. The guy that installed my replacement neck noticed that the center jack screw was tightened too much, it pushed against the truss rod enough to crack the back of the neck. He made a shim to correctly adjust the height without using the center jack screw. I know the situation is different than yours,  but sometimes you have to think outside of the box to figure out what the cause is...................... Must be Andy Fraser........... :vader:

Truss-rod issue was my guess too. I had to "customise" a washer for support because the TR nut was slowely eating its way through the wood on which it rested. It's a 2005 Standard and the TR nut in both of my 2007 SG Supremes rest on metal so maybe this was contruction flaw that was corrected later on ?

Anyway, because of the TR instability I had already retired her for gigs. I hope it doesn't crack any further though  :-\, because I still use her at home a lot, but since it's a Gibson it probably will ......  ;)

No idea if the later change was due to problems like yours. But considering the price of a new one, you ought to look into having it repaired.

I love that Bass, even had a TRC made with her name on it   ;D, but she's a regular money pit and I'm getting a little tired of throwing good money after bad.

I experienced something very similar recently with my '94 Les Paul, and there was just an SG bass on eBay with the same kind of crack. As I'd try to tighten the nut to get the neck a little flatter, the crack would open up more. Took it to my guy Dean Tremont, and he fixed it. I don't recall exactly what the solution was, but it seems to be working.

If the spirit of Andy Fraser is floating around trying to squeeze itself into cracks, they aren't going to be the kind attached to any basses. Drop the b maybe.
