Gibson Basses / Re: Studio Thunderbird IV

Before I bought my first bass I looked at all kinds and went through Craigslist and "completed auctions" on eBay to see what T-birds were generally going for and since early December I've only seen one Gibson T-bird go for less than $1000.

Noel Redding was awesome!

Gibson Basses / Saw a T-bird in action last night
« on: February 28, 2009, 07:17:38 AM »
Out of the hundreds of bands I've seen play, I've neither seen nor heard a T-bird in action. Last night I went to a local bar, Slim's, to see the Octane Saints, and there was a Gibson T-bird. Holy crap, the sound was awesome! I had to interrogate him about it after the show.

Before last night I did not know that Gibsons have the front strap pin at the base of the neck while the Epis have them on the front horn. I suppose the reason is that the Epis have the bolt on neck while the Gibs do not. I'll have to relocate my pin then.

All this is elementary to everyone here, but I'm still learning!

The Bass Zone / Re: Which one of your basses has the most Mojo and why?

My 81 Jazz that I bought NOS in 1988 for $200.  20 years later, everything still works great.  Had the same set of strings on it for more than 15 years.

Say, who is that yahoo on the right?

This is a cool thread and I've enjoyed checking out everyone's mojo basses!

Beautiful! The burst on the left is fantastic!

Your dark red one makes me think a darker pickguard  on mine would look great, since it's dark burst. Do these have to be custom made?

I uh, er, have a tent, but it's for recreational purposes only. Besides, I'd rather not have grass and pigeon poop on my new bass.

I'm amazed the T-bird is passive!

Thanks much! Looking over the T-bird before I took her home last night, I was honestly surprised that I was looking at a bass which only costs $300 even when new. The quality of it is incredible. I ran the numbers before I went to look at it on Guitar Dater Project, which said it could be a Korean or Chinese-built one and it turns out this one is Korean, made in 2006.

I'll have to get the wall hangers this weekend.

Never liked his music, but I respected him until he suddenly fired the whole E-Street band back in the '80s.

A vestigial strap pin, as it were.
I know I should, but right now I can't stand the idea of drilling a hole in it!

Nicely done...

Well every single time I express my love for funk and slap playing I get the cold shoulder. During the discussion on Rick James it even got really ugly and during the discussion about Jermaine Jackson, all I got were negative comments. Nobody was going "yeah, he's actually pretty good."

I totally support your love for funk and play funk all the time at the radio station. Who will dare deny the skill of Bootsy Collins?

I think your new Epi 'Bird will cause you to re-think the term "neck dive" at least until you can relocate the the strap pin to the neck heel.  ;)

Yeah, boy! I posted a pick of the T-bird on the Gibson thread and added that neck dive comment. Man, it's not fooling around!

It is indeed. Has a little neck dive but the whole thing is light enough that it's not really a big deal. It sounds great through that old Bassman too.
