GROUP...
I play bass in a WHO tribute band out of the Detroit Metro Area.
I have two of the four Entwistle rigs that are listed above, and like to use both of them (of course, not at the same time).
I would love to hear what Entwistle rig the bass guitarists out there would like to hear and see if ever attending a WHO Tribute Show.
I left off the "Status Buzzard & Ashdown RPM-1 / Digitech 2120 HI/LOW Rig" due to the fact that I do not have over $10,600.00 for a
Status Buzzard that just sold recently on ebay! I do own a Digitech 2120... Not my favorite though.
In my opinion, there are Pros & Cons to each rig.

Yes that skeleton suit is GREAT!
However, he did wear the jacket later in the early 70's with the Fenderbird!

I'm partial to the Alembic/Sunn rig, partly because I like Alembics and partly because of the recent "Ox Cam" segment of the DVD reissue of "The Kids Are Alright"...

Entwistle had so many basses....
He liked Thunderbirds, y'know.
Saw Billy Sheehan pay tribute to the Ox playing a Precision bass.
Mike Portnoy, Paul Gilbert & Gary Cherone were the other members.
Available on dvd I think. Goes to look....

Come to think of it, "Live at Leeds" was an additional early exposure to the OX...

I like his earlier sounds best. Live at leads is one of all time favorite bass sounds so the P/Hiwatt rig gets my vote. So does the Fenderbird /Sunn set up. I think the thing to do is to capture the feel of his work, how you do that is up to you. I will say you can still find Sunn Coliseums for pretty decent prices, a Hiwatt is going to cost you !

Either of the first two in my opinion from a Pete Townshend wannabe. (who used bass sized wound speakers in his cabs)
Besides you cannot go wrong with REAL equipment. Just don't mock up some HARTKE bullcrap or reissue HIWATT pcb impostors. It just doesn't sound the same nor will it, no matter how good your spider fingers maybe.
The speakers in the cabs I could see getting some tired ones replaced with absolutely equal sounding to original as possible. I HATE people that pose with wigs and false GEAR.
NOT RIGHT for a REAL Tribute.

I'm really tired of the statement "You can't go wrong with a Fender P and Ampeg SVT" but in this case I voted P and Hiwatt. No matter what he used after that I still think that sound is the Ox. No matter what he played after the P he always went for the big attack and lots of grindy treble.

P/Hiwatt for me.i really dig hiwatt geetar amps too.a guy i might do a band with plays one.i love the sound.i should try my bass with it.

As Johns Career was so long it is going to be impossible to have all the right gear on stage. I would pick the amp rig that suits me best, for me Hiwatt. Then have the right bass for the different phases of Johns career.

The idea was not to use multiple rigs on stage... (At least at the same time ;D).
I already own the Sunn Coliseum rig. (Coliseum Bass, 880, & Lead heads - with two 4x12 Sunn cabs & two 1x18 Sunn cabs)
Just wanted to get input from those who play bass and are aware of John's history of equipment use.
I also own two Sunn 300T heads with four 4x10 Sunn cabs & two 2x15 Sunn cabs.
To be honest, in my opinion, this rig beats them all hands down! I am able to get such a wide range of sounds from them.
What I find interesting is how he utilized each rig... as each rig got more extreme, so did his playing.
Personally, I like each of Entwistle's rigs... they all have something different to bring to the table.
Thanks to everyone so far for their input... looking forward to more.

This is my rig as it stands now, I used to run A '72 SVT with a 2x15 and 8x10 next to it :o . It is inspired by John's Isle of Whight rig but Hiwatt gear is hard to find >:( I do have a Hiwatt DR201 coming over from England, next I will be working on getting Hiwat cabs. about 20 years ago I had a Hiwatt 2x15 wish I still had it. Sweet looking Sunn amps you have there. I keep figuring I'll come across one someday.
I used 2 Acoustic 370's back in the early 70's. I had a Sunn tube head and a Sound City speaker for practice.
The Sunn was cool.

Sorry to dig up such an old thread, but I completely missed it....
Anyway, hard to decide! I went Fenderbird/Sunn. It was a good "in between" since I really like both the P/Hiwatt and the Alembic/Sunn. I didn't really care much for anything post-Alembic/Sunn.

I love John's Fenderbirds ! My favorite of his many basses, well aside from the non reverse Thunderbirds he played ( I never knew he played any NRs till I saw pictures on line, long after I bought my first in '77 because I thought it sounded like John !) Chris use what suites you while celebrating John, I think you will know whats best

I have seen video of your band and your bass sound is truly amazing with the Suun/Fenderbird set up ! I would just run with that.

Not seen this posting before but I went for the P/Hiwatt, but I'm biased and a Hiwatt user for over 30 years (albeit with a 21 year "rest") and as the "F*nd*rbirds were built by Peter Cook... ;) I was nearly torn that way - the only time I saw JAE he was an Alembic user and I thought he was using Hiwatts, but that was '76...

I'm partial to the Fender, but I'm also partial to Sunn, so I wouldn't hesitate to mix and match. No one in the audience will notice what amp you use, anyway - and most won't know what bass you play.

My favorite is the Fenderbird and Sunn Coliseum rig.
Although I am working on having a replica "Spyder" bass built... and have a few leads on a couple Sunn 412LH cabs.
Still need a set of those 18" Sunn Bass Bins... can't find them anywhere!

I think that's a regular Gibson non-rev. I'm not aware of any NR Fenderbirds in Entwistle's collection. The pickguards are kind of non-rev looking, but the bodies are reverse.

It's true though. :mrgreen:
I voted for the P bass and Hiwatt combo also, his sound on Live at Leeds is killer. I saw him with the Ashdown rigs and Status Buzzard bass twice in little clubs a year or two before he died. He used all his stuff, he made sure to include that in the ad for it in the paper and it was a 100 seat club. His stuff tripped the breakers on his side of the stage 4 times. He sounded and played great like he always did and it really didn't sound too loud to me, sounded just right.

Last couple of months I'm busy gigging again, after some quiet months with just some recordings (yep, I'll post some new songs soon!) and last couple of gigs I did with a P and Hiwatt. That kicks serious arse!

Also, that "Won't Get Fooled Again" TOTP clip is also from 1971. Didn't he bought the whole lot of NR 'Birds from Manny's and dismantled them for parts for Fenderbirds (the hardware)?
And how about the Hiwatt/Thunderbird transition rig used at the Young Vic shows in the spring '71? You can hear this combination on the deluxe 2CD edition of "Who's Next" and it sounds great to these ears.

He used a Fender P bass & Hiwatt's at the Young Vic... Check out the picture in insert that comes with the CD... page 10.
The Thunderbird / Sunn rig picture in the insert is from The Rainbow gig November 71'.

My guess is he used the Precision first and then switched to Thunderbirds. The bass sounds different than on "Live At Leeds" or "Isle Of Wight" or any other from 1970 when he used that same rig with a Precision bass.

The Young Vic gig on the "Who's Next" deluxe was recorded in April the 26th 1971 which was the final "Lifehouse" concert. The first one was in January that year.

The same pic is also in the book "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere - The Complete Chronicle of The Who 1958-1978" on page 198. This reads on page 190 (in the chapter from year 1970):

The date of the Who's first Lifehouse rehearsal at the Young Vic Theatre, Waterloo, South East London, as documented in Mike Shaw's (Track Records) diary. Roger's cousin, Graham Hughes, was on hand to take photographs (some of which appear on pages 197-198). In the original edition of this book, these were erroneously attributed to a Young Vic performance on 5 May 1971 (from a misleading date appearing on Hughes' original contact sheets).

So the date on the cd booklet is also wrong. The pic with the Precision is from 1970. Unless I'm proven wrong, the Young Vic gig featured on the deluxe edition of "Who's Next" has John playing a Thunderbird bass through a Hiwatt rig. 8)

When did Entwistle start to use the Sunn Coliseum bass and lead amps? Was it when they started to tour the "Who's Next" album or did he use them already in the Glyn Johns sessions in April and May 1971? The Young Vic shows had him still using the Hiwatt stacks but with the Thunderbird already and the Thunderbird is on the album too (if not on every track but at least on the majority).

GREAT Who tribute band!
Here are a couple Who/SUNN pics -- one you may not have seen from Long Island....look like 200S bass rigs, probably circa 1968? The Who then used SUNN Orion Series rigs (with the striped grill cloth) for the Magic Bus album but blew up a shitload of them due to a design flaw in the amps...actually caused SUNN to recall the Orion Series and scrap them, which is why they are so crazy rare!

I owned Townshend's "British Lead" prototype head...sold it last year to a guitar friend in Germany whose band (Color Haze) uses all SUNN gear.
I'm also a big SUNN fan and longtime user...although more toward the Noel Redding/Felix Pappalardi rigs:

I think Papalardi only used the smaller 200S cabs/heads and not 2000S cabs like Redding used toward the end of his JHE days, as pictured live. I know Mountain had at least one of Noel's 2000S heads though and a number of Redding's 200S cabs. I don't know if Papalardi used that 2000S head or if West did, since it is close to the same head as Leslie's prototype "Coliseum Model T" that I had.

Some were Noel's, not Felix's....but that is one of my old Hagstrom 8-strings in the photo (not Noel's) that I used a lot in the early 80s that happened to look just like the one Hendrix and Redding used. Also my sunburst Fender up on top...just to "Noel up the pic."
For any real SUNN freaks....if you look close...the top two cabs in the stack in this shot are actually 200S cabs, not the larger 2000S cabs like on the bottom. The cabs are heavy monsters and I set this stack up myself for the shot....so I cheated and only put the lighter 200S cabs on top. I actually DO have the other 2000S cabs and need to re-shoot ti correctly at some point...with a roadie to help :)
