I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid...

What have I started...?

Care to trade...? which one...? I have some really nasty old Mark King's on my Jack you can have, soon as I get a new set of regulars...

12483
My Peter Cook narrowly tops my RD, purely because I've had her longer (over 30 years now) and she's suffered more abuse than any of my other instruments, covered in knocks, dents, scratches, cracks, bits missing, but still my opening instrument...

My RD is having her own party at present but my other bass, a Hohner Jack, has just got such playability, and really suprised me in her value for money stakes, bought as a back-up after the RD "died" - easily as good a sound as my other too, and can, quite literally, go through walls... nicknamed her "the pin-cushion" for no reason I can think of at present...

Gonna sneak my SG in for an honourable mention in the above and beyond the call of duty award for the abuse she has received - vicious sound...

Never did get round to that refin...

Gibson Basses / Re: single coil-like buzz on a Gibson Thunderbird

Checking the grounding and shielding seems like a good place to start - bell-out between the hardware and the casings of the pots (zero ohms), and make-sure the ALL the cavities are ALL well shielded... I've had a bad pup that used to be very microphonic, so all is possible...

12485
Sorry Lightyear, don't know your name, you can't have them, no matter how much you really want them... ;D

Ethel...! Ethel...! head him off before's he's finished off the hole Gard-damn'd buffett...

... As for the goatee, I'm going for a slightly Scottish feel here, probably blue central and edges, although my daughter thinks turning it into 2 prongs would be interesting - everything else goes down to a number zero crop, black would be creeping too much towards vanity for my liking... she's also been trying to get me to let her plat it too...! - bones are out, all sad little veggies here... I could go a carrot, I guess...

As for the rest, hmmm, lets see, what was I wearing through the GLAM era - long hair, jeans and tee... PUNK era, oh yes, long hair, jeans and tee, the New Romantics - hair went west (GI crop)... HA! anyone remember Geddy Lee's hair back then...?!?! so a hat, but still jeans and tee... thru the ninties...? was there a fad in the ninties...? you guessed it... hat, jeans and tee... us "CHROME-DOMES" out there know all about stage glare (Greg Philbin and his T'bird) and those who do not know what sunburn up top feels like...

Dave... thanks for coming to my aid... did you know my Uncle Ewen...? I never did get back that quid, he loaned it to Sid, he said... ALBATROSS...! who said that...?

Uwe... what do you mean, when I was a child...
btw... my wife's never had a doubt...
Hyperactive...? My dad fixed my cot to the floor after he found one leg hanging over the edge of the stairs one night... I'd rocked it that far out of my room...
ADHD...?

... look, a blue bird, it's a blue bird...

Chris...  ;D

Mine are all XLR, but I'm deranged...

In the late seventies a friend was selling his SG Special, a Hiwatt and a Marshall cab, and I picked them up as a job lot, paid for over a few months, making my Gibson tally 2, which remains the same to date...

Anyway, during 1979 his partner (nicknamed "Mouse") randomly asked to look at one of my picks, which were logo'd Gibson type, and then asked if she could keep it... I didn't argue or question her reasons for wanting it (far too dangerous...) but about a month or so later this arrived in my hands as a gift from them both...

It's not a perfect copy but is the same size as a standard pick, slightly thicker than a heavy, and made out of solid silver... I used to wear it pretty much all the time but when the chain broke some years back it transfered to a gold chain with a cross my wife gave me - after a series of accidents with broken chains and after nearly losing both I presently don't wear them at all, but I think of it as quite an unusual trinket... never seen one like it... I think she used to think of me as the big, little brother she never had, so liked to spoil me from time-to-time...

Anyone else got anything Gibson orientated but out of the ordinary out there...?

Oh Mark... I know, I know, I do so know the shoes just have to go, and I know I can fully trust your opinion on this point, I can promise you they are not comfortable and are being worn under duress - the band packed up in 21 years back and the drummer is having an eighties themed party, hence my eighties rush shirt, nasty addidas trainers, etc, but I'm going to go for the full John MCoy, including waistline - I, for one, do not have the legs to match your pins...! I'll pass on the F*nd*r though...

On an artistic note, the general concensus of opinion (daughter's "pester power") is that the goatee will be going blue streaked for the gig this Saturday...
"He's just a little fond of chiffon in a wrist array-ee-ay-ee-ay... A wrist array-ee-ay..."
ohh FZ, where are you when we need you most...
... I assure you it is just a temporary thing and I have no intention of trying to usurp your enviable position of prominence on this forum...
BTW, my wife is hoping it will be permanant, as that will mean removal of the goatee b4 Monday recommence of employment, not that she dislikes it, of course)...

I am thinking of wearing a colour cordinated AEROSMITH ROCK-A-ROLLERCOASTER (Disney) t-shirt, which is exceptionally poke-your-eyes-out... my favourite shirt... co-ordinates with my Tequilabird, though I am leaning towards the name FranKENstein's Monster, that is...

Uwe... I just managed to get the FDC on eBay - a really neat set...!

Dave & Uwe... the day I understand what I'm talking about will... hey, look at that squirrel...

ps Just caught your posting Gary - nice one...
... at the WHO PUT THE BOOT IN gig at Charlton Football Club in '76, whilst we were all enjoying the pleasure of a teeming downpour (which had descended on that part of London and remained in place for most of their set) and post Alex Harvey and Little Feat, whilst waiting for the Who to come on, some bright spark climbed up one of the permanant stadium lighting setups, where the Who's lighting engineers had carefully set up their laser mirrors (for their then very inovative laser show) and had knocked some of them out of position... the DJ for the day (a chap by the name of Nicky Horne, who worked for London's Capital Radio, popular at the time with the ROCK fraternity) put it out over the stack that...
"Thanks for being a total jerk, you have just completely f*ck*d up the Who's laser show, which will result in a delay of at least an hour before they can come on, in fact, I'm going to play this song just... for... you..."
... and on came that number, to great applause, and to resounding choruses of...
"Your gonna get your f*ck*ng head kicked in - CLAP-CLAPCLAPCLAP-CLAPCLAP-CLAPCLAP-CLAPCLAP...et al...

... How many know the full title of that song and how beautifully appropriate it was to that moment...

... one of ROCK's GREAT MOMENTS...

... any of you see where that squirrel went...?

That she does, but I'm not aloud to put her up to max thru the Hiwatt and the 312, local stregic arms limitations in my area ("IN CASE OF SONIC ATTACK... Do No Panic...), so I'm told... though I must admit I would like to give all three of my four-stringers a run thru Scott GOT's rig... but just a tad to far to travel...

Gotta read thru this thread properly to catch all that has been laid down here, and as part of my reformation, I thought I'd post some of my own pics along the way, If anyone declares an interest in what I post PM and I'll be happy to discuss a trade but no sales... ;D

I started to note some of my influences on my own post, the RD was it...? but I'll try and be more cohesive and on thread here...
(HAH...! chance'ud be a fine thing...)

Uwe, you mentioned that you liked the Ian Gillan Band - took a bit of digging but I found this...

Mr John Gustafson fits the bill...

Mr G with a WAL on stage at the Marquee... my copyright...
... some of the negs/slides have some scratches but this is one I 'shopped before uploading...

... and your welcome to a scan of the set if you would like them (about 30 or so), I know you weren't there, and there is nothing I can do to help that so this is purely by way of a thank-you and to share the memory... I remember a lost and lamented guitarist with the initial SRV (along with the most excellent Tommy Shannon and Chris "Whipper" Layton- never parting with that programme) gracing me with 20 minutes or so, sharing his memories of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, backstage at Reading in '83, and gracefully reminding me that Little wing, which he'd played earlier, was originally recorded by a certain Mr Hendrix and not by Clapton (how dumb did I feel, and I said it!), who he also discussed, and I remember an American talking to me about Woodstock - his lasting memory of those 3 days was, "the smell", and then we went in to watch Skynyrd play That Smell as a brand new unreleased song, along with a set similar to their first official live album...
No matter how young, or old, there will almost always be somone with older memories to share... and share we should...

I was lucky enough to see Ian Gillan about 5 times at the Marquee (I only remembered 3 times but pics show me differently) IGB, the Steve Byrd line up 3 times
(DRAT, DRAT and TREBLE DRAT... the night Blackmore came on I'd left the "Baby" at home...! - "Baby" was the nickname my buddies gave my old now retired Pentax A - odd thing with her was that I could drink like a fish, and often did in those days... but when ever I was with "Baby" some inner defence mechanism would always protect me from harm and I'd remain compus-mentus... wierd...), anyway, I digress, also the torme lineup...
It is dificult to keep me on track without some tangentelisms taking place... err, I digressed again...
so... I followed all of the Deep Purple spin-offs, I missed the #3 but did see Bolin (Taste' is an excelent Purple LP, even if it is more Bolin/Hughes than Bolin/Coverdale/Hughes/Lord/Paice, even got some pics in a (WS) tour programme and had John Lord set me up with some hard-to-get seats for their show at the Rainbow Theatre in the late 70's, not an intentional name drop, just a thank-you Mr Lord to an extremely generous man - I think he had to buy them from a tout with his own readies...!

Uwe, you mentioned Kenny Aaronsen above (loved HSAS... love his playing) and seeing him play in Billy Squiers line-up - was that supporting Whitesnake, I was at the Dusseldorf show...

back on thread... They (IGB) played a sparkling set and his voice was spot-on , hitting all the whoahs, just like DP's MIJ , right to the top of the scale - I think the only other men to have effected me so much with their voices are probably Paul Rodgers and Ronnie Van Zant, both of whom I was lucky enough to have seen in the 70's - encoring with the obligatory Smoke' - seeing him sing Child In Time was something else - my only regret was no live version of Five Moons, probably my favourite IGB track... the set was similar to the BUDOKAN recordings, but in a pub/bar type location...
The band played like excrement of a shiny digging implement: John Gustafson's seminal sparkling runs with his WAL bass rumbling along in my ear-hole (I was sat on the edge of the stage in front of the stack for most of the gig, having a buddy get me the occasional (poor quality, vastly extortionate, but still quite refreshing) lager from the bar, Mark Nauseef's jazzy fills, Colin Townes' beautifully melodic keys, and Ray Fenwick's underestimated Strat' work...

a close-up of JG's spare WAL resplendant with leather tooling on the front - kinda weird to me... my copyright...

The next lineup produced one of the great lost rock lps , never having being properly re-issued as it came out of Japan, and featured an awsomely under-rated guitarist, Steve Byrd...

"The Voice" with Mr Byrd... I had forgotten these existed until I went digging... my copyright

... and a drummer that blew his chances (Gillan's words), Pete Barnacle, Mr Townes again on the keys, and my dad, the inimitable John McCoy, him of the gut wrenching bass-lines and jumping around like no-one his size or-ta be doing...

this shot was from a set of the Torme line up at the Marquee...  my copyright...

Mr McCoy has been a major influence in my life and for the offer he made re Samson I will never forget him, although it was a path I chose not to follow...
Thank you anyway John...

I mean, I seem to have turned into a clone, except what's left is greyer...
the "eyes must be that bit of the devil I have yet to exorcise... off stage checking the sound levels...

... and resplendant with hat 'n' keepin' it tight with "Bomber" Cornwell...

sorry, Uwe, my "jack" is a bit of a pin-cushion, err... kinda happened..., anyway, I have to admit my to my sins before I can truly reform... I wonder what else I can dig out of the pit that is my negative box...?

Lord, hear mah words, ah beseach yah, before ah's dragged dahn to the farrrreee pit...

psst, anyone got some good ones I can add to...  wh... what was that noise back there...

... ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH......

Look Uwe, something arrived by Deutsche Post (DAMN - no stamp for the collection... oops, did I think that out loud...?) (Schweinhundt...! Ze ungrateful Englander...!) - just as we were off out to visit the in-laws, then the weekly shop, and then we got home (daughter doing coursework) to a PC disaster zone, which led to the back-up PC relocating and a wee bit of network work and then "SKIPPY" (guess where I found this HP bargain) decided to die (probably why it was in the skip) and ended up relocating to the garage where the FranKENstein's Monster still lays awaiting a PSU (home built previous PC that died mid December and resulted in an emergency hunt for a replacement Dell pre Xmas bargain...)... takes a breath

Ethel...! Ethel...! he's gone of agin... you goes out the bayak an ah'll takes the woods...

Oh yeah, ... so when the dust settled it was 1730 and I was due at a rehearsal at 1900 - nothing loaded yet... so rush dismantlement of the RD was in order to relocate her neck pup to the bridge position in Uwe's spare scratchplate ("T-CUT" took off the scratch beautifully, btw - tested on the old one first) and I ran out of time to do a functional test...

Safe and sound and fitted Herr Bass-Meister...! Danke...!

The Long Road To Recovery... my reform starts here...

No Uwe, not the Mahler, not the Mahler, please, have pittttteeeeee...!

... and here she is with her cousins, my Hiwatt and the 312 ...

Hmm... FranKENsteins Monsters ... now there's an idea for a name...

Rob, I guessed that... ;D

Er, Uwe, I have a deep dark secret re Mr McCoy...

When I was 18 and 1/2 way through my apprenticeship with British Airways, I used to haunt the Marquee, seeing all sorts of bands, usually drinking too much...
I would get there early, and a lot of the time would have no problem getting up behind the stack to do a shoot, ran into all sorts of people who also were into NWOBHM, like Mr Ulrich of some US beat combo these days... I was more "old school"...

I saw Wishbone Ash, all Thunderbirds and flying V's (saw them a lot), when someone opened the rear doors and sardined the place (400 max and they estimated 700 - what a gig...!) the Pretenders (a Christmas eve show - I predicted a new song of theirs would be a hit - brass in pocket - saw Jim Scott Honeyman join Nils Lofgren for 1/2 a set a few years later - Odeon show - a week later he was gone...), anyway, I digress...

I saw 3 lineups of Gillan at the Marquee - IGB (they used to do a stunning version of Child in Time... I'll e you some pics when I dig them out), the Steve Byrd line up (the night Blackmore came on ;D ;D ;D - no camera that night - the look on Steve Byrds face when RB came on to steal his glory, playing Smoke, and Tokyo... - Byrd also played on the 2nd Zzebra LP wth McCoy), and the Torme line up (sold JM a set of pics of that gig, remember seeing Torme supporting Whitesnake, pre Gillan days)...

a few days after that show I ran into Mr McCoy in a second hand book shop near where we both lived, a mammoth of a man and a great player, and he was wearing this big furry brown coat... we chatted for a while, usual subject - bass guitars - anyway, he mentioned this band (singer and guitarist) he was producing that needed a bass player and a drummer, they had had a couple of singles out (he depped on bass) but were looking for regulars, and invited me for a jam with them...

It is here that I made a decision that put me where I am today, and steered me away from ever seriously taking up a career in music - I explained that I wanted to finish my apprenticeship so I could have something to fall back on... which he appreciated... and wished me well... I had no wheels, and personally, at the time, it would have been the wrong move for me...

Anyway, a chap called Chris Aylmer (rip) joined on bass, and a oddly named drummer called Thundersticks; the guitarist was Mick Samson (now also rip)... the vocalist used to wear these ghastly dayglo leopard skin print vests and had this really cheesy moustache, with a voice slightly reminiscent of Arthur Brown, and used to go by the name of "Bruce-Bruce"... band was called Samson, nothig really noteworthy in musical history, except for the singer...

I think the line-up recorded 3 lp's before Bruce Dickenson left to join Iron Maiden and seems to have made a career out of it...

So many stories, so little time...

Tiiiime for bed... :bored:

Sproing....
