Black Country Communion

Wow.  :o Messrs Hughes', Bonamassa's and Bonham Jr's new toy.

Nothing is especially new or groundbreaking on this track, but it does rock in an unaffected way, Glenn hasn't been this good (and unmannered) since Hughes Thrall days.

He does have a way of even playing something as simplistic as throbbing eights in his slightly ahead of the beat way.

Rob, didn't you say you would interview him, reveal your secrets!!!

I kinda like that. I checked out a couple live tracks as well and I'm always blown away by Hughes' vocals. In a rock world of guys that never could sing and others who can't anymore, Glenn just gets better and better...

Yeah I interviewed him about a month ago.
Prior to the interview I downloaded the entire album and I think it's the best album Glenn made in a long time.
I've always felt that Glenn's albums often contained too many fillers. And for my taste he sort of loses himself in the high squealing too often.
But in this album he had a (great) producer keeping him on track. And he had a great writing partner in Joe Bonamassa.

I especially focussed on the bass playing aspect of the new album and him in general.
He seemed very eager to make a statement he's a great rock bassist. The first song on the new album Black Country has a very prominent bass riff. And the bass is very much up front in the mix.

He told me he's still talking with Gibson a about a GH Signature...

My favorite song on the new album is Sista Jane.

Excellent!  Probably the best thing he's done since Soul Mover.  And, while I love his singing, and have worn out Feel a few times, he really does go into those high registers a lot more than he needs to.

I don't think he knows what it'll be yet. He told me he'd like to be "the one that gives Gibson their first really successfull signature bass".
But he seemed so totally in awe of the Fender P bass, that I don't think there would be much Gibson character in any Gibson GH Sig...

He's obviously not interested in the Sig being a Thunderbird. He asked me: "can a Thunderbird sound like a P bass?"  :o
No, it cannot. "What if you put Lindy Fralins in?"...  :-[

His endorsement with Gibson is a bit strange. He's got a Gibson Guitar endorsement. They gave him several ES335's. He told me he didn't really know what to think of that...

The entire BCC album was done on a P bass by the way. No effects. Just into a SansAmp and then straight into the desk.

Those of us with a foot firmly in the Fender camp (Uwe: and questionable esthetics!   ) are just reading this, pickin' and a-grinnin'.

All hail the mighty P!

Good old Glenn, ever the gear tech!

Sounds like they should either build a Grabber III for him or bring the Victory back. In a deep purple fin with trapeze shaped inlays.

With his penchant for 17th fret note bursts and slides, a TBird with its bad upper register access would be a torture for him. Besides, he's a little small for one, even the Mustang from Trapeze days did not look like a toy on him.

Who produced the record?

My single (TB+) pup BaCHbird has some P-like qualities. In a raunchy, always roaring "Live at Leeds" sort of way.  ;D

How about a single pickup Les Paul bass? With a maple neck???

Who produced the record?

Kevin Shirley.
He's the big motivator/inspirator behind this band.
Glenn even called him the 5th band member.

Great song has a Sammar Hager feel to the vocals ;)

No one said Derek Sherinian was in the band  :o
