Opinions needed on a Tele Bass
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:03:57 PM »
I've been thinning my amp herd lately and have a possible trade for one of 70's SVT cabs for what advertised as a 60's Tele Bass: http://knoxville.craigslist.org/msg/1812853704.html
However, after some better pics:

I have some serious concerns. The neck and the fretboard don't look right to me, but if this is truly a late 60's Fender neck, the dark color could be laquer aging, but that doesn't explain the lighter fretboard. What do you all think?

Definitely not a Fender.  One of those 1970's Japanese copies.  I had one that was labeled Maya and it was genuine plywood!   :)

The fuzzy pic in the CL ad was what prompted me to offer a trade. After seeing better ones that show the bass more clearly, I wanted to be sure I wasn't just being paranoid. In hindsight, he never calls it a "Fender," but no one else made slab bodied Tele Basses in the 1960's, and why would he value it at only $450 even in non-working condition? A late 60's Tele Bass ought to be worth at least double that, even in rough shape.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I believe I'll pass. The 8x10 I was planning on trading IS a genuine Ampeg and it can keep company with its brethren some more.

body looks like a ampeg little stud.   neck doesn't look like anything fender ever built.

That's the hitch - there were several.  The "Big Stud" came in a few variants, and one was more like the 68 Tele bass. Ampeg imported those with the 2x2 headstock, but several Japanese brands were more direct (but inaccurate) take-offs on the 68-71 Tele Bass, like this CL beast.  Good thing you didn't haul an 8x10 cab somewhere to get a good look at that!
