1965 Fender Five Five String Bass Guitar Limited - $3800 (Charlotte NC)
This is a limited guitar fender said that there were only 2# made like this Serial No/ 600029 I've had this guitar for 46 years I still have the hard shell case that it came in am retired and not playing it any more.Call Ken Cell Phone 704-634-6626

There were about 200 made over about 5 years, the 2# must be a typo. They only had 15 frets and IIRC they were tuned E to C.
Might be worth it to a collector, I doubt a player would pay that much. He would probably have better luck consigning it at a vintage shop.

A friend of mine used to have one and there's a guy in Holland owning like four of 'm. Nice basses.
-
i've seen two in my life and they were both blue. a local guy has one he has been playing as his only bass for about forty years.
-
I recall seeing one. It was in a glass case in the music store I used to go in and drool at when I was a kid in the mid-late 60s. It was just like the one in the picture.

The HOG has at least two of these right now, cool collector item but useless so they went the way of the Dodo. I don't think I would part with a large amount of $ for one.
-
The idea was so players could move across the strings rather than up the neck, hence the 15 frets/E to C tuning. JPJ had one in sunburst.

JPJ had one in sunburst.
You are correct sir!

Wow, that is a great photograph!

Yup ! They were the Kings Of Cool back in the day .....
-
I always wanted one, but just not a priority. The concept is interesting.

I love the picture Hörnisse posted - I always thought the Bass V was going to be Mustang sized, but here you can see how it is really proportioned.
-
It appears to be in excellent condition a very nice specimen of the breed. :D

JPJ ROOLS!

I've seen about a dozen of them and played several. They are peculiar and the one that was set up the best was a blocks and binding neck. They just seem to have been designed to allow a you to play the same patterns from G that you play from the D string to the G. Back when they were $500-800 I was tempted, but never could bring myself to pull the trigger. Most people then and now would weigh the cost of one vs a nice P and not be able to justify it.

Fast forward to 2:15 and hear John Paul Jones playing some pick-style funk on a Fender Bass V. Doesn't sound like his Jazz or not as raunchy as his Rotosound-stringed '52 Precision. A pic from the gig:

According to the sound here he might have used it in the studio on "The Crunge".
Another Bass V player was Tom Petersson:

I think I would enjoy hearing what Wizzard did live.

Somehow, when held horizontally (playing position) it is considerably less ugly than when photographed vertically (typical eBay/music store pic). It's like the Thacher effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thatcher_effect).
