Kubicki Ex-Factor
« on: June 27, 2013, 05:25:09 PM »
I bought one of these today.  I've had a Key Factor 5 before but have always wanted an Ex-Factor.  This one has been played but I love the look and sound.  Here is a quick pic from the place I bought it from.

I always liked the look of those basses.......

If I played in a "straight" '80s cover band I'd be all over one  8)

I've always liked the looks of these as well. Played a couple in stores back in the 80's but really don't remember how they sounded.

Get it on (Bang a Gong)!

I tried a handful in the 80s. Strangely, some were great, and some, not so much. I didn't really like the 32 ply neck or whatever it was.

It has an 18 volt preamp too.  I lowered the action but am probably going to have to shim the nut up a bit as there is a bit of buzzing on the open notes but not the fretted.  The pots date to late 1984 but the the build code on the neck says 8 85.  It has been played for sure but that is the way I like my basses.

Did a setup on it the other day.  Very easy to work on once you understand how.  The neck is very comfortable and worn in very nicely.  Just like the rest of the bass.   8)  (well, it is one of the first ones made)

That thing is beautiful!  I also remember playing one at a shop back in the late 80s - felt great to me at the time.

Nice score!

Uwe would be impressed by the Framus inspired neck laminates!

It is actually 34 at the base of the neck.  It tapers from 2 3/8 at the 23rd fret to 1 5/8 at the nut.  (1 1/2 inches at the extended D)

Almost more glue than wood... ;)

Maple, at a guess...

How do you rate the sound and feel of the instrument now you've had a chance to stretch, and have you had a chance to rehearse...? I've never seen or heard one, in the flesh...

I love ExFactors...and Kubickis in general. Have several.

Fast necks on the Factors. A couple months back I had  bassist in India fly someone to NYC to swap me for a mint bright yellow ExFactor I had ( SN0555)...he played it at the largest stadium in Dubai two days later with a major Indian pop star he backs up.

Best part is I got ExFactor SN044 in trade. The first one was actually SN024, so this is pretty early. It was a custom order for the bass tech of The Jackson's and other W Coast bands in the 80s. Also a cool one off color.

Strange.......Mine is 024 made in 8 85.
