Did Felix use his reissue EB or original on Nantucket Sleighride?
« on: September 13, 2009, 10:26:59 PM »
Just wondering if anyone here knew, the bass sound is so great on that album, of course it's probably 90% the way he played, but......

This is a good place to look, Bob...

http://www.pappalardi.com/

Here's one interesting article (from Zig-Zag), but only a general direct mention of the EB1 on the last line, but some other mentions and a nice general history - from an interview with Felix and Leslie...
http://www.pappalardi.com/Articles12.html

Another from Guitar Player, detailing strings, amps, and how he (reputedly?) persuaded Gibson to re-issue the EB1...
http://www.pappalardi.com/Articles9.html

No direct answer found, but a good place to start...

I know of him playing EB1's and EB0/3's, also Plexi-Ampegs, but I am not a Mountain expert, just a BIG fan...  ;D

I don't know the answer, but here are studio and live versions of the same track if anyone wanted to compare the sounds.  FWIW, he's playing the reissue EB-1 in the live clip:

The computer I'm on now has no sound, but I saw them twice three piece in the early 70's and Felix had that same set up, a bunch of Sunn 2000's and an EB-1 although I didn't even know what one was back then. I knew it sounded great though. I'll check out those links, thanks.

I don't suppose anyone's thought of asking Gail Collins...

Yikes!  I saw the original Mountain in Chicago about 1971.  They were great.  Fleetwood Mac opened.  Leslie West is still playing that painted Les Paul Jr. from Gail Collins.

FWIW, I also saw The Leslie West Band - a trio that included Dino Danelli(?) on drums.  And then there was the time I rented my Acoustic 360 rig to Leslie and Co., only to get it back blown up.

She's not so good with technical details, tends to be clumsy and sometimes triggers incidents inadvertently.

Dave... no need to duck (too far!), she was/is (repudetly may have died, as did their child a few years back) an incredibly distinctive artist, ad if there is any truth in the allegation, re FP's infedelity... hell hath no fury...

You also have my envy, Gary... and as you also saw the LWB, a certain guitarist the worked in that band later formed Foreigner, did he not...?

You're thinking of the Leslie West Wild West Show.  We used to dink with "Money" off that album.  It was another cool Mick Jones riff that spawned that one.
I also have a boot of WB&L that we recorded in 1971 on a cheap cassette.  My old drummer has since turned engineer, and remixed the lo-fi tape to CD at Smart Studios.  LOTS of Jack Bruce on that, but not much else.  We were 20 ft. from the stage.

 damn... born the wrong side of the pond, Gary...  ;)

Mountain, and WBL, and LWB... very green right now... The only time I saw Leslie was in a reconstituted version of Mountain, Supporting Deep Purple, in Paris, back in '84... saw Foreigner only the once, at the London Rainbow in '76, playing a brand new song called "Hot Blooded"... both were outstanding gigs...

As I recall from an interview I read, Felix's first EB-1 was stolen pretty early on in Mountain's career.  Other than Woodstock, which was only their fourth gig(!), I think every other live photo I've seen has been the re-issue.  So I strongly suspect that if he was indeed using an EB-1 in the studio on Sleighride, it was the newer one.

I'll try to dig up that interview.

/rick

btw there are two Mountain tracks in the 40th Anniversary Woodstock DVD Box set, on the bonus disc; some cool, rare video of EB-1 #1

There is a studio shot I've seen somewhere recently of Felix with a T'bird...?

Maybe it's just me, but does this look like a T'bird head...?
