More unashamed DP-plugging from Uwe ...

Nothing at All is my favorite out of these. Nice tune. I pretty much fell off after Perfect Strangers. Gillan's lyrics sometimes make me cringe. But I'm happy to see them still out there not just touring, but putting out new material. Thinking about it now, I wish Yes could have settled into a late life career like DP has instead of the bickering factions that they became, putting out "OK" material, if anything at all (I really liked Fly From Here, but Heaven and Earth was horrible).

True: Fly From Here was great - the follow-up a disaster, Roy Thomas Baker or not. I really liked the voice of that French-Canadian David Benoit. I saw him live, he was obviously a gay man (and had some Broadway Musical mannerisms) and that was kind of the nail in his coffin with diehard Yessonites, rock fans can be a cruel and reactionary bunch. The new guy from Yank proggies Glass Hammer does everything right in Andersons's shoes, but he's hardly individual.

And while the guys depping for him in either Yes or the now defunct ARW try as they might: No-one can match Squire's reassuringly sloppy gung-ho grandeur. The man was the Keith Richards of Prog bass.

Just bought the new Steve Howe solo outing, haven't heard it yet.

Meanwhile Leonid & friends do their take on Deep Purple. Just like their Chicago tributes this is once again a stellar performance.

It's nicely done alright. 

Never my fave DP tune - that riff sounds like Ritchie came up with it in three seconds while taking a leak. I always liked Glenn's funk bits though in a song that most hard rock bassists would have treated in a more conventional way.

The Mark III lyrics were always kind of silly without ever being funny. A "Stormbringer cracking the sky"?  Ian Gillan would have scoffed: "Where is my Robin Hood outfit?" at such escapist mind precipitation. Silly enough for Robert Plant to have come up with it. Or even Uriah Heep with their Tolkienesque world populated by wizards, travelers in time and rainbow demons. The harmony vocals of Coverdale und Hughes (nicely captured by the Russkies) are 2die4 though.

I think the new tracks are ok. I would not find them out of place on a Gillian lp.  My favorite Deep Purple stuff is still the first lp and Come Taste The Band.

CTTB is a hidden jewel in DP's canon, the album is vibrant und ebullient to this day. As for the debut, it has naive charm in its vain attempt to "outfudge" Vanilla Fudge (DP's role model at the time), but it is still very much an album of the 60ies (Rod Evans' vocals especially) while the seminal In Rock (recorded only about 18 months later and after three other albums - DP were rushing out albums at the time to see what sticks) is one of those end-of-the-60ies recordings that kick-started (and I shall use the term) 70ies arena heavy rock.

This should have been the first single right along. For Purple standards, it's as poppy as they ever get.



Last time they were as catchy was 1987!
