Gibson Basses / Modified or original LP Recording Bass?
« on: July 07, 2018, 08:54:47 AM »
I saw this on the local CL. The headstock is not black, and there's no crown inlay. Also has the 60's tuners instead of Schaller M4s.  Is this a modified instrument or an early variant?

The Bass Zone / Opinions on scale length for 8 string bass?
« on: January 06, 2014, 02:44:37 PM »
I've been assembling parts for an 8 string LP Triumph style bass and am not sure what scale length I want to go with.  I believe that some of the Hamers are 30" and 32". Anyone here have any insight into 8 string shorties?

Bass Amps & Effects / How do you set your Musicman HD130?
« on: August 27, 2013, 10:02:49 PM »
I picked up a HD130 and used it on my Sat and Sun gigs. Sat night I plugged into an SVT 8x10 and waas having a hard time hearing it, plus the EB0 was farting out in the low notes. By the end of the night I had the master at about 6 and the pre at about 4. Sunday night was better, running into my Avatar 2x12 with the master at full and pre at about 5. Since I see that there are a few 130 users on here, how any of you set your pre/gain? This amp is strange to me.

Gibson Basses / Nevermind... (Ping John Fertig!!!!!!!!!)
« on: September 28, 2011, 07:18:44 PM »
No padding included.  ;D

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's breakthrough Nevermind album, Gibson USA is proud to introduce the Krist Novoselic Signature RD Bass. Through his distinctive playing with groundbreaking grunge band Nirvana, to his post-Nirvana bands Sweet 75, Eyes Adrift, and Flipper, Krist Novoselic has distinguished himself as a bassist of formidable tone and unmistakable style. Able to hold down a firm bottom end that glues a song together while simultaneously shining as a center-stage musician in his own right, Novoselic helped to establish a standard for the sound, feel, and style of alternative-rock bass playing of the past two decades. To honor this musician's impact on the sound of contemporary rock, Gibson USA presents the Krist Novoselic Signature RD Bass, an instrument primed with unparalleled playability and powerful contemporary tones, all dressed in an alternative style that countless modern bassists will appreciate. Finished in Ebony Black nitrocellulose lacquer, the distinctive lines of the RD body shape cut a figure that definitely stands out from the crowd, too.

Here's an interview with Novoselic: http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/krist-novoselic-0928-2011/

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Ovation Magnum I schematic needed
« on: October 23, 2010, 02:00:09 PM »
I've been scouring the net, but I can't seem to find a schematic for an Ovation Magnum I.  Would anyone here happen to have one?  I can find pictures of the electronic layout, but I'd like to know the values of caps, etc.

EDIT:  I figured out the layout via the picture I found of the electronics.  I bought a repro pickguard off of ebay so now I can run it stereo through my Acoustic 320 head.  I'm going to try it out at my honky tonk gig tomorrow night.  That oughta turn some heads!    ;D

Gibson Basses / 1969 Les Paul Recording Bass body for sale
« on: May 17, 2009, 04:43:38 PM »
I didn't know if I should put this here or in the Project forum but I have a LP Recording bass body that I was going to put on ebay but I figured I would offer it up here first.

The neck had been broken a few times and wasn't worth trying to salvage, so I took it out.  The tape moved slightly when I was drilling out the neck so there are a few marks in the pocket, nothing that would affect gluing surfaces.

One bridge post insert has been moved to accommodate a Shaller 460.  The insert has been pulled so you could plug it and redrill it for the evertilt or hipshot if you wished.

I'm not sure what it's even worth to someone so let's say $125 shipped???  If that's unreasonable let me know.

Other Bass Brands / Ovation Magnum help
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:49:51 PM »
I just picked up a Magnum II that consisted of a neck, body, and a ziplock bag of parts.  It appears that virtually everything is here, but I have no idea how to wire it up.  Would anyone here happen to have a schematic for it?  Or even better, a Magnum I schematic.  I'd probably be happier with it being passive and selling the preamp.

« on: May 01, 2009, 05:30:46 PM »
I just saw this bass on craigslist: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/msg/1149825782.html

I've never seen a Heritage bass before.  It's kind of funny looking.  ;D

Gibson Basses / Hipshot Supertone 2 point replacement bridges
« on: April 23, 2009, 05:12:30 PM »
I saw a listing on eBay selling them and I can't find anything on the Hipshot website.  I would assume that they're made for the later 2 pointer?

The Bass Zone / Plectrum info?
« on: April 23, 2009, 04:57:43 PM »
I need some help finding info on a pick that I found in an old bass case.  They're a rounded triangle shape with a raised divot in the middle of one side to rest your finger in.  The pic is labeled "HERIBA O.B.G.M Western Germany."

I've looked around the net and can't find any info on them.  I thought that some of you "more experienced"   :D bassists might have come across them before.  This little pick has become my favorite and I'd like to find more of them!

Gibson Basses / How much??
« on: March 23, 2009, 09:10:39 AM »
I just got a call form a person interested in selling some NOS Gibson bass necks.  From what he and my coworker told me, they have inlays and fretted boards and are ready for install and spray.  My coworker said that they looked like EB2 necks with 6 digit serial numbers on them.  How much should I offer they guy?

Thanks!

Gibson Basses / The first electric Gibson Bass?
« on: December 28, 2008, 08:32:08 PM »
Maybe this is old news, but I came across this bass looking through The Shrine To Music online catalog.  I can't remember seeing this one on display at any time.

I went to school here and spent a lot of time soaking in all of the instruments.

I guess the name has been changed to The National Music Museum.

I've finally finished up a few projects so I thought I'd share them with ya'll.

First up, the remains of my first project:

One of the reasons that I went to repair school was breaking the truss rod in my 1975 G3.  I replaced the rod and added a carbon fiber strip to strengthen the neck.  At that time I also put on a fretless ebony board and refinished it blue.  I loved the way it looked and played, but it sat in the corner for a few years.  It turns out that the only fretless instrument I was interested in was the upright bass.

Fast forward a few years.  I had a friend who was just getting into bass and had acquired a 77 EB3.  He played on it for a while and found that it was a poor fit for the C-tuned sludge rock he was playing.  We talked about my G3 and how it might be a better instrument for what he was doing.  I put the original maple board on and made an even trade.

Last December he mistakenly left it in his trunk for about three weeks (in Minnesota!! :o ).  The neck was all messed up and he took it to a local shop for adjustment.  I had told him to bring it to me because of the graphite.  Other techs might get too overzealous and snap it.  Well, another tech took the nut right off.  We talked about trying to remove the graphite and put in yet another truss rod, but I wasn't very keen on that idea.

About that time I bought a Ripper carcass off of ebay.  I planned on finding all of the parts and rehabbing it to former glory.  I had enough basses at the time and he needed an instrument so I offered to pull the electronics and make a Gripper.

I just finished up with it and thought I'd show it off:

I made a custom TRC for it:

The strings running to the nut obscure it a little but I think it turned out well.

My other project was rehabbing another Ripper for myself.  My karma must have been good, for about the time I started the project for my friend I came across a Ripper for a very low price.  I used that bridge on the Gripper and ordered the Supertone in black.  I also had the black Gibby tuners that Old Puppy offered up here for free (send me your address) so I did up the Ripper in black.  I need to do a slight fret level so the strings are off, but here's a pic of the two together:

I apologize for the poor pics.  I could use a new camera (and some photography pointers ).

I'm beginning my next project:  a 1983 Squier Bullet bass that will have a mahogany cap to cover the many previous routs.  I'll put the cavity control in the rear and install complete Ripper electronics in it.  I can't wait!

Fender Basses / What pickups for my Precision?
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:48:29 PM »
Greetings all,

I've spent most of my time on this board on the Gibson side but lately have fallen back in love with my trusty 1975 P Bass.  I've been looking for another P Bass as a backup and found an E Series MIJ today for less than one day's pay. ;D  I've cleaned it up and put new strings on it, and it's a decent player.  The only issue with it is the pickups have been replaced with active EMGs.

Any suggestions as to what kind of pickup I should put in here?  I'd ideally like to get a similar sound to my 75 but I won't pay crazy prices for gray bottoms.
