Anybody got a tracing or measurements of an ampeg (or Johnson) Scroll bass body? I'm pondering a project based on that body shape. Thanks.
-
Check with Jim (Jumbodbassman), he owns at least one.
-
got original ampegs as well as 2 bruce basses. tell me what you need
ampeg - first scroll AUB and AEB
ampeg early 90's - from this site...
Bruce Joihnson - aub2 lastest version
Bruce Johnson - amb 2 (magnetic pickup second generation)..
-
Errmm... I don't know the differences
Thanks for the offer! I guess I better do some research before I ask for anything specific.

i will make it easier for you.
the original AUB and AMB is the ampeg with the bridge off the body and mystery pickup. i believe it is 34 1/2 scale.
Johnson replica AUB-2 -4 is 35 scale
AMPEG with magbnetic pickup is AMB bass.
Johnson replica is AMB -2 34 inch scale.

Words kinda fail, seeing all those beauties in one place... only time I've seen one in the flesh is Boz playing one... 8)

Wowie thanks Jim!!
Okay - so NOT the SSB, that one looks really different and not appealing to me.
Is there much difference in body shape between the others? I can't honestly tell the difference. They all look similar, and pretty.
I'm not so concerned about pickguard, pickups, bridge type/ placement, or even the scrolls, as I wouldn't be trying to replicate any of that - just the outer shape of the body.

Has anyone attempted a Fender-Peg...?
-
That's sort of where I'm going with this idea. With at least one thunderbucker in it :)
-
I quite like that idea...

The Italians did ...

Yeah I've been wanting to get my hands on one of those. I'm not generally wild about J pickups though, and certainly not with the bridge pup way back there.
-
i will draw up a few and you can go from there....

If you could make copies I'd appreciate it, Jim! I've been looking for an excuse to make a semi hollow body.
-
Careful Carlo, making semis can be addicting. I know! :P
-
Is a scroll bass a semi? I thought it was solid with an f hole routed all the way through as a decorative touch...but what do I know, never touched one.

I think they are different designs depending on the manufacturer. If I did one, I'd be tempted to do it as a semi-hollow body rather than routed top to back.

Same here. I like the look but not crazy about the holes.

Hmm from the Johnson site:
"The body is hollowed out with a series of acoustic chambers that add warmth and sustain."
