Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Advice on '73 Rick requested, please

Well, dang. I ran it over to the shop and it turns out the bridge pickup is dead and the selector switch had been wired so that the neck up was always on. Also, the neck has a weird twist in it down near the body, something any truss rod adjustment won't cure. So, those last couple of frets are pretty much useless, especially on G. But uses plays those anyway, right?

STOP!

Never, never let anybody touch those truss rods unless they're completely familiar with the old style Rickenbacker rods and how to adjust them.

Are you sure about the pickups? Are you familiar with Rick-O-Sound, and if not, are you sure you're plugging into the normal input and not the Rick-O-Sound? From your description, it sounds like they may not understand Rick wiring.

Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson Facing Price-Fixing Lawsuits
« on: February 21, 2010, 01:25:39 PM »
That the price-fixing investigation could be vindictive and frivolous is definitely possible. For 10 years I worked in the medical device industry and quite often we had to contend with lawsuits, some legit, some frivolous...

I wonder if Gibson alone is being investigated for price fixing. Usually when I hear about price fixing two or more companies are involved.

There's no price fixing investigation, i.e. there's no government agency investigating them for fixing prices. There are only class action civil suits alleging price fixing among guitar companies including Gibson.

The only reason the article focuses on Gibson is that it's a Nashville paper.

IIRC there were quite a few celebrity cameos in the film.

The movie was based on a book by Terry Southern written in the late 50s. But in the book, Guy Grand was an American and it was set in the US. Terry Southern did the screenplay and it does follow the book otherwise. The movie was panned as being disjointed, but that's the way the book was too, a series of scenes instead of some grand (pardon the pun) plot.

If you don't know Terry Southern, he wrote or co-wrote some famous screenplays including co-writing Dr. Strangelove.

It's possible that Gibson is being targeted in the wood investigation. But the price fixing allegations are civil suits, not government action. And they involve other companies, not just Gibson. It's the plaintiffs' bar trying to extort settlements from big companies, nothing more, nothing less.

I though the movie was strange...

Understatement of the year.  :)

Everybody has their price. Will you walk away from a fool and his money?

Yeah, looks extra clean inside.

Note the wiring channel made by drilling with forstner bits. Those were the (pre-CNC) days!

All y'all stop arguing, now.

Is that Smartwood the reason Gibson is being trounced?

More likely it's due to Stupidwood in the executive offices.

$750 would have been an average price 6 or 7 years ago for one in that condition with no neck/truss rod issues. It's an excellent price today. Looks good, looks like you did well. But you haven't said anything about how it sounds and plays!

I can think of a few mortuaries and cemeteries which might take him up on it.  (The ones accused of emptying graves and re-filling them while stacking the bodies.)  They could have some really nice flowering plants with that much fertilizer.

The Soylent Corporation might also be interested.

Were other people harmed?

From what I've heard, one other body has been recovered. Also, one person hospitalized in serious condition, one hospitalized and released.

Most Japanese copies are bolt-ons, but not all.

That's all I know, hopefully you'll get some more responses before this afternoon.

Will it be displayed in its own ecologically sound Smartwood display case, or will you just put it next to your other Gibsons?

I prefer Dumbwood basses.
