Bass Amps & Effects / Re: How many 4x10's around here?
« on: March 10, 2009, 02:53:21 PM »
I have been using a single Peavey 15, but I didn't get the note definition I started to crave.  I think my ears are becoming more discerning.

I ran into the Goldline at a GC sale last summer, and I compared it with some other 4x10s there.  I think the bottom end is quite strong, and that the overall sound provides low-end guts but preserves note definition.  I personally like the sound of the Hartke metal cone speakers I've heard, and there is obviously something in common with the metal cones in the GK speakers, but I thought the GK cab had a warmer sound than the Hartkes. I suggest doing some side-by-side comparisons with other 4x10s, and I believe the Goldline is a GC exclusive, so they should have others handy to compare with....but the sound was a winner for me.  The drawback is weight, as the cab is around 90 pounds which is on the heavy side for a 4x10.  If I ever need it for a large venue I can pair the GK 4x10 with my Peavey 15" cab..but that's not normally the kind of gig I play.

There aren't many reviews of the Goldline around yet, but since a few of them suggested that longevity of the speakers might be an issue, I bought the GC extended warranty - something I very seldom do. Probably a waste, since I don't really plan to push the cab near its max rating.

If you try out the Goldline, let me know what you think.  I like the sound a LOT.

Thank you for the info. I went to GC just yesterday, and I tried an Ashdown 4x10, and it seemed too warm for me. It was one of the higher end models. I also tried a Hartke, but I just couldn't dial in the sound i wanted.

They didn't have the Goldline 4x10, but they had the 2x10 and the 8x10, so I played them just to get an idea.

WOW! I found exactly what I was looking for. I played a Mexican P-bass off the wall, and a Gibson SG bass and I got close to perfect on what I wanted out of both the 2x10 and 8x10, tone wise.

I'm still looking at different cabs and makes, but if I can, I'm springing for the Goldline.

I'm in the market for a 4x10. How is the Goldline Pilgrim? I'm looking at either the GK Goldline or BLK for a 4x10.

I'm currently using a Kustom 2x15, and I think its a little too boomy for me.

I think its great. I would love to try one out.

The color choices are nice, I'm loving the tangerine thing they got going. Its a nice change from the standard sunburst, black, white, etc.

The only gripe I have is the pickguard looks like it may be glued on. But other then that I would love to try one.

Entwistle - for obvious reasons. He got me out of playing just the root which was killing my interest in bass at the time.

Krist Novoselic - the first bassist I could pick out of any song, never got lost in the mix of Nirvana. The first bassist I actually payed attention to. Introduced me to pick playing actually, something I don't do often, but occasionally. Also got me into Gibson basses.

Mike Dirnt - A punk bassist that does a lot more than is really required of him. Inspired me change up my punk rifts when playing with friends.

Geddy Lee - Not only am I dumbfounded by his ability to sing and play such rifts, but I really like his tone. Not that I'm willing to buy a jazz bass just yet, not unless it has a P-neck.

Jack Bruce - Just for Sunshine of Your Love. The rift I play when I'm trying out any new bass/amp. Love it.

That FB is looking great!

I've been considering doing a Warmoth Fenderbird, but I know it wouldn't be a match like this one. Any chance I could get a copy of that template?

I'm looking forward to more in-progress pictures, shes a beaut.

Ah yeah, I'm internet shy when it comes to videos  :-\

But thank you very much, I don't get complimented often and when I do, it always pushes me to play even better. I'm working on my ear and learning the fretboard at the moment.

I'm sure it would surprise the people I play with, thats for sure. I wouldn't mind adding it to my small collection, but like you said, its a tad too pricey. I never knew Charvel even made lefties until I saw your white one.

I usually play through a Kustom 2x15, as the 20watt is only for bedroom practice. It's loud enough to shake the room so it works. I'm saving up for a 4x10 over the summer, so I'm hoping for something different from the boom of the 2x15.

Here is another video. Decided to do something ska (something I rarely play).

A few mistakes in some spots, but I tried to make it not so noticeable.

Can't go wrong at 150, but being a poor college student out of a job, I cannot afford it

Not yet at least....

Oh yeah, they don't seem to have as many. But it's likely that Kurt is getting ready for a spring shipment and is just waiting for all the old stuff to clear out.

I hope the Jag bass sticks around though.

I love my SX. I don't just own an SX bass, but an electric and acoustic guitar.

It's the tiger flame P-bass with the covers I added later.

I really want one of these though to have a Jazz-like something in my arsenal.

Ah thank you for the kind replies and compliments everyone  :)

Can't think of anything more fun then just cranking my little 20watt practice amp up and jamming to some Who.

You know what amimbari? Just yesterday I went into a small mom n pop guitar shop just to look around, and the only lefty they had was a Charvel PJ just like yours, only black. Sounded and played great (with the exception of the buzzing, but that's an easy fix), but I couldn't justify the $360 they wanted. I'm really diggin' the sun-bleaching on yours.

And I think its awesome that you can play both ways. Either way, we southpaws got to stick together!

I'll post another video after the ol' camera is done charging.

I only have ONE bass I play with the E on top right now that is a POS, and like you I LOVE to play both ways, just to mess with people's heads, but for me, I have played G on top for many, many years, so I play like that on stage and in the jamrooms.

I have a ton of charvel rightys but FINALLY, FINALLY found a lefty version, and hopefully it will arrive safe and sound in a few more days :)

I may put one of my other necks on it so the body is correct, but the strings will still be G on top.

Did that Charvel come in yet?

And, for the absolute hell of it, and for no reason other than to make a fool of myself, I present to you, me playing on my Epi Thunderbird, converted for pure lefty usage. Enjoy (or don't).

One of my most favorite songs to play on bass, I find it so fun to play.

and I'm playing through a small Ibanez 20 watt practice amp, so it won't sound all that great compared to what I'm used to.

ya, sometimes I get lost in the sea of righthanders playing "insert your bass brand here" threads, but being the minority over there playing lefty, playing inverted, AND using Jackson guitars, I get to see the bias against me ( OH THE THRILL OF IT ALL )

Tbird1958 turned me on to this board, and since then, I have met some more friends, some great discussions, and some awesome bass porn to check out--AND another outlet to show off a few videos to those who generally don't see people flipping guitars too often..... just out of curiosity since your already a lefty, did you ever try playing inverted on someones righty bass?

anyway....., in order to provide you with a proper welcome, here's a jam that many hundreds of people heard while walking onto center stage for almost 30 years, and this jam is to welcome you to the LastBassOutpost center stage, and hope you stick around for a while and contribute your experiences playing a birdFlipped.  ( I don't have the sheetmusic for that jam, so I just followed the chord changes and winged it )

I've never been welcomed with the tonight show theme before, I feel honored  ;D Thank you good sir. I am amazed at your ability to play with the strings strung righty.

To answer your question, yes, I've attempted to play righty, a righty upside-down as a lefty, and a pure lefty bass. I just felt better about playing lefty. I can play really simple lines on a righty upside-down, but nothing too complicated or with too much moving around.

Perhaps someday I'll post a video of my own playing, but alas, I am too shy with my abilities.  :-\

But yeah, talkbass was great, but after reading over there for 3 years, I feel like I'm just reading the same things over and over again, and there is so many people, you don't ever get to know anyone personally. I already feel like part of a tight knit group here. I look forward to posting more.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone.

Yes, you might've seen me around talkbass amimbari, but I don't post around there much anymore and not under the same name. It's almost too huge a forum for me to enjoy.

I also play a lefty SX P-bass with flame top and maple neck. But I usually pick the bird over the SX, just because the Bird gives me everything I want.

Here is a much much more recent picture, just after jamming with my friends and having fun.

Oh and it might look like I'm slapping/popping, but I'm not  :o

Hey everyone. Long time lurker here, first time posting. Thought I might share my experiences with a "flipped bird" so to say. I loved the look of the Thunderbird, and always had my eye on an Epi. Determined, I would not let my being a lefty handicap me from playing it. With a little help, I had the strings flipped, the bridge intonation set for a lefty setup, and the strap button drilled into the lower wing. I don't ever plan on getting rid of it.

Old photo, but you can get an idea of what an Epi looks flipped. No, my hand doesn't hit the knobs. I only have that problem when pick playing really close to the bridge, and I don't do that anyways.

And a 90 degree jack plug works wonders so you don't hit the plug with your wrist.

This bass has served me so well, and I get every tone I could ask for from it.

Oh and a buddy commented that the Bird on the pick guard looks like he is dive bombing towards some prey (or to poop), pretty cool, or funny I think.
