Title: Geddy whips them out!
Post by: Pekka on May 11, 2015, 12:45:40 PM
Rush is back on tour and it seems Geddy is using a lot of basses from his ever expanding collection. There's many Jazz Basses, a Precision, a 4080/12 Rick for "Xanadu" and even a pink Paisley Tele. And a non-reverse II.

And, did you further know what bridges are on some of those basses?  There is a LBO connection there.

The non-rev must have that bridge by Scott then, right?

This pic with the Paisley Tele is great and Geddy's expression is priceless.  "I didn't know I had this one too" :D

Gotta love the Non Reverse - Geddy finally "gets it"

I gotta say...anything other than a jazz....or a rick...just looks wrong.

I watched a clip of Xanadu last night and it was GREAT to hear that band with a Ric bass again. Looking forward to June 12! Curious to see what songs the T-birds appear on. I saw a shot of him playing a reverse as well.

Does not appear to be a Badbird on there....................yet. I know there is one on the '64 and his Embassy and I think one on the Pelham Blue NR.

The non-rev sounds great and that song took me by a surprise. Sounds almost like REM and that's not a put down. I think I might reconsider "Vapour Trails" as it is now available in remixed form.

I noticed he hasn't swapped out the bridges on the 2 Rics I've seen him using so far. I just watched a clip of Cygnus X-1 and he had some WICKED sounding Jazz Bass.

It seems he is using the mono output of the Rick. What is that 4001, a '73?

The burgundy 4001 is listed as a '68. That 4080/12 is interesting. I could swear it has full width inlays, and the gold guards are not something I've seen from Ric before (on that model). I wonder how Fender feels about his new traveling bass show?  8)

I would guess whatever agreement he had to play Fender has expired.  Maybe thhey need to put more coin in the meter.

Or maybe he never agreed to play Fenders exclusively.

I would imagine payment would have arrived in the form of a royalty for units sold of his signature bass.

He JUST came out with a USA Jazz...can't seem him cutting off the ties with Fender...unless it was a nice parting gift!

Well, he IS Geddy F'ing Lee, I guess he can do whatever he wants!  ;) He's also got a wall of faux Ampeg amps for part of the show, while being an Orange endorser.

Turns out the FG 4080/12 is a Dale Fortune restomod, hence the full width inlays and gold guards.

Seeing them tonight in San Jose!

How did you like it Harry? As a fan since 1978, I thought they did a spectacular job of pleasing us. I had 3 wishes - amp stacks (real or fake), double necks, and Jacob's Ladder. And they delivered! They've even pulled out "Losing It", complete with live violin in a few cities. Class act all the way!

I enjoyed it! We had pretty good seats - the crowd was pretty good except a couple of people in front of us started taking cell phone videos of practically everything in the second set. Oh well, tried not to let it bother me.

SPOILER ALERT: I really kind of enjoyed the way they continually dismantled the stage throughout the show (during songs?!!), gradually moving back in time. We didn't get the Losing It. I enjoyed the way they played most of 2112, Jacob's Ladder kicked ass, going backwards from Hemispheres (Prelude?) to Cygnus X-1 was awesome! I only managed a couple of halfway decent shots - the beginning of the first set with multiple Jazz Basses got me wondering if he would whip out a Precision, and he did, a couple of times! Once during Roll the Bones:

Had to catch the doublenecks too!

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/411/19353680283_97b92f3cc3_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/vudESP)

My only complaint? Too loud. It seems like they're playing indoor sports arena type places, and the SAP Center in San Jose is where the Sharks play. I've heard people complain about other stops on this tour, the vocals being "shrieky" but for me the guitar was too loud and piercing. I wore earplugs for most of the first set to save myself for my favorite songs from the earlier years...

Seeing Pert's kit in that first pic in the OP makes me sick to me stomach (but I did stuff myself on all you can east sushi earlier so my threshold is low).

Also interesting to see Geddy rocking a Moog Little Phatty vs any of his serious vintage stuff.

He had a Yamaha X7 (I think?) for the first set, then at one point they replaced it with the Little Phatty. He's been using it for a couple of years now. At least he's using a real Moog!

What don't you like about the drum kit? The image with the star and naked guy? They had a video with the Signals Dalmatian from the Signals album cover sniffing the naked guy from the Hemispheres cover's butt!

The decadence.

Neil Peart, adolescent Ayn Rand diversions of the past aside, is probably one of the most un-decadent rock musiscians ever. He's the opposite, he's utterly no frills. Rides his motorbike from gig to gig, just like that Greek finance minister of yore. Travels countries on bicycle.

Yes, his drum set is a Fortress of Solitude, but he uses it all (generally within one song too!  ), it's his tool shed, he just has a very large one. And his drum solo is a blinder, a sonic and visual event, amazing technique, yet all with self-deprecating humor and a wry smile.

Be proud of your countryman for once, Jake. Even though I understand that growing up in Canada as a musician possibly overdoses you on Rush.  8) But OTOH, they are something very special, consistent success, yet untrendy at any given time, consistent line-up, yet their share of personal tragedies, and an amazing longevity: When 2112 was unceremoniously slammed by the NME in the mid-seventies, no one would have believed that Rush and their often angular music would still be able to fill large halls world-wide four decades later without a hit-song in sight.

I'm no Rush-ite, but I like them as a band possibly more than their music.

I don't think you understand the meaning of the word, Uwe.  Decadence is:

- a 1000 pc drum kit (his Sabian Sig Cymbal line is very nice though, if expensive.  Probably the best rock hats ever)

- riding your chopper from gig to gig while an ample crew of roadies packs up, loads, transports, unloads and sets up your aformentioned 1000 pc drum kit for you to just come up and sit behind.  They know how you like it.

- have you ever even heard him play?  Sure he has the sense to keep it tasteful a lot of the time, but when he goes, he f***ing goes; tries to fit too many of those kit pieces in to the run. Gotta justify their existence.

In closing  (though I wouldn't say he sucks, the scene is hilarious):

PS: just a reminder that both Joe Flaherty in the scene above and I are fellow Cannadians.

I'm happy that this forum also offers a platform for the obviously deaf to make themselves heard.

And the meek shall inherit the earth.

PS: My definition of decadence still is: Having a 180 basses or something close.

Uwligula...?

Much as I really like Malcolm McDowell, a sandal film with lots of violence and a little porn is still only a sandal film with lots of violence and a little porn. Caligula wasn't a great work of art, let's put it that way, extended lesbian love scene or not, even though McDowell played the arbitrary streak in the Caligula role well (though it was uncomfortably close to his Alex character in Clockwork Orange and laid the foundations for him being typecast forever). What a waste of acting talent. And newer history sees Caligula in a more favorable light than his traditional depictions have been.

Agree re the two roles...
Saw the latter on release here (somewhat cut for the UK market) and CO on a rather rough copy video as it was withdrawn and unavailable for many years...
If you're talking (do you like) Gladiator movies then Russell Crowe would be difficult to top... (No, I'm) Sparticus is still a classic, mind you...

Spartacus is a classic, but Gladiator? Much as I like much of Ridley Scott's work, that film was overdone and as oversized as the Roman Empire. An endless film about a 10 minute plot trying to bludgeon the viewer into early submission. Yawn. Gosh, I was really surprised that the good guy dies in the end and sees his family in heaven and the bad guy dies too, but no one welcomes him anywhere. And poor Herr Phoenix (a great actor) had to play this incredibly one-dimensional and silly role - not enough that he is a devious villain, he (i) also needs to kill his father, (ii) screw his sister (HIS sister, not his dad's, auntie-sex in moderation is kinda ok), (iii) be a coward and (iv) a bad sword fighter even against a mortally wounded man. I like my villains with a little more light and shade.

Still a fan...

If you're talking Mr Scott, then Alien (dir cut) and Blade Runner (original and ultimate - slightly OCD on this one) - I enjoy Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down, Black Rain, Prometheus, and even Legend...!

If you're talking Mr Kubrick, then Strangelove, 2001 and Shining are undoubtable classics, but Clockwork was a bit too art-house for my tastes...

Not to interrupt the film critics :) but... I saw the Rush gig in NYC and quite enjoyed it.  I liked the largely backward-moving set list, ending up with "Working Man".  Nice that they played Xanadu - the whole damn song!

It was kind of fun watching Geddy switch basses on nearly every song, and a bit surprising how much the mix changed.  I agreed with... oops I've forgotten who said that that T-birds didn't really stand out. In fact, I forget which songs he played the NR on, but I couldn't really hear him well at all on those songs. A bit disappointing because I love T-birds and thought it would be cool to hear what Geddy sounds like on one.

Best bass tone of the night to my ears was "Roll the Bones" played on a precision.  The circa-1990 synth parts on that song have not aged particularly well, but otherwise it was great. I like precisions, but that really surprised me ... I like Geddy's tone on jazz basses and ricks, and I never really associated him with precisions, particularly not for a song of that relatively late vintage, but it really cut through and had a nice edge to it, more of a midrange bark than he usually gets.  Wish I'd heard more of that from the NR!

That was probably me who said the 'birds didn't stand out. It's no surprise that the various Jazz basses sounded the best overall since that's all he's been playing for the past 20 years or so. I too was surprised at the great P bass tone on Jacob's Ladder. I think the Zemaitis was the dirtiest sounding of the bunch, in a good way! I was kind of surprised to see him use it on an original Steinberger tune.

The medication appears to be helping...

Forgot to add, went to see 2001 with my parents as a circa 8/9 year old when it was released... never been the same since... wanted to go straight back in to see it again... thoroughly confused my mum and dad... started my love of sci-fi which has never waned... once I get the library out of storage and shelved I'll take a pic...

And me, Sir!!! They don't - they melt musically in but they don't have that upfront edginess of, say, a Ric or an angry Fender. It's no surprise: The structure (neck-thru) and the wood (maho), the vintage factor and the pup positioning ... A TBird doesn't yell at you, but it stands its ground. And you can be a bit busier on it than on other basses without stepping on anybody's toes ...

Uwe has the idea for the next great cell phone game, "Angry Fenders".

Guitars shooting musical notes back and forth to knock musicians off the stage!
