Title: Player '67-'68 EBO-3 snagged off ebay
Post by: godofthunder on October 05, 2008, 06:13:29 AM
Well it was more than I could take. This well worn EBO  was up this morning with a BIN of $650. Looks solid and I hope with a good set up it plays well. I can't see paying the bucks they want for a SG bass and right now there is no way I can afford a nice 60's EB3 like my fav bassist Jimmy Lea used before he got his John Birch so I think this will fit the bill nicely. I might replace the full size humbucker with a mini, I like the location of the bridge pickup better than where Gibson put 'em. I'll keep ya posted. Nice score Scott.  I agree with you on the SG and vintage EB prices.  Although, things are pretty depressed right now on eBay, so it is a good time to buy IMO.

It is a good time to buy if you have the $. I really was not looking to buy anything at the moment but I really miss my '67 EB3 that I had. This will do fine.

A white refin perhaps?  Didn't Jimmy have one?   BTW great score, I'd love to have one but with a Nikki Sixx 'Bird ordered and our BaCH project on the horizon I have to be a "good girl" with my money

They do look good in white

But I like that one as is - well loved, and I bet it'll sound sweet with the pickup in that spot.  Nice score!

OMG I love that bass, That was up on ebay awhile ago wasn't it ? I'm not sure what I will do with this bass. I really want to do a white Jimmy Lea EB3 but given the pickup location it might not be the right bass. The more I think about it I am going to put a mini bucker in there.

Egads ! What a great shot ! Jimmy's '63-65  Cherry EB3 started out stock and was soon modded by John Birch with a extra  Middle pick up of JB design and a built in distortion unit. The bass  remained in that configuration from '72 till about 75 when Jimmy had mentioned he might like the bass white and while the bass was at JB's for some minor work it had a complete overhaul .Two JB hyperflux pickups replaced the two Gibson pickups, a large white pickguard covering almost the entire top of the bass was fitted and the bass was finished in white, From what I hear when Jimmy got the bass back he was livid ! A short time later the bass was stolen from JB's shop and Birch built Jimmy this. Thats jimmy holding his bass and my John Diggens built replica. Yeah, that sounds about right - that shot was from the fall of 1975, at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ.

DAves Guitar was made by him and his dad using a Gibson neck. One of the first guitars I ever saw using a Humbcker at the bridge and a Strat pup at the neck.

Admirable  score, Scott! How do those two muddies sound together and the bridge one on its own? I'd hesitate to go back to a minibucker, frankly. And you do know: You can't undo what you did to your poor EB-4 by now making good with this one here!

Two muddies ? The bass I just bought has a guitar looking humbucker in the bridge spot. I do luv me my mini buckers though !

Nice & broken in.

Did a Google on Jimmy Lea & found out he used a V a lot for recording.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Lea

I've been usin' my Epi V a lot for recording too....no HUM.

Hey Scott~ Didja know he put out a solo album in 2007?
...available on his site.

The Flying V bit is typical Wikipedia speculation/rubbish. All he had was an Ibanez long scale Flying V which preceded the Gibson short scale 1981 Flying Vs by several years. He must have liked its look and used it on quite a few mimed TV performances, but I doubt whether it ever saw a recording studio from the inside. I have the exact same model and it's not a horrible bass, just docile sounding, but scarcely something you would record with if you had the other instruments Lea had at his hands back then.

And I think his 2007 solo album is actually quite excellent though like a lot of stuff recorded by just one person (he basically played everything on it) it doesn't have the tension that a good band performance has. Slade could have made a great album out of it.

The Ibanez V is the early version with the mudbucker and mini bucker copy pups. By the time the line was introduced to the US they had a P sorta J set up. I agree with some more input the album would have been a excellent Slade album. It is sad they are all still here a reunion tour would be great.

Really! Finally one thing about Slade I've managed over you Scott! They were probably the loudest show I ever saw too, I was about 10-12 rows back from Dave Hill's side of the stage, he was wearing platform boots with spurs them! My ears rang for several days afterwards............. ;D

Hiwatt should make hearing devices for old and deaf rock musicians. In that case they do something back ánd it's very cool to have a Hiwatt logo on a hearing device. I would weare one!

I've told this before, but Slade were the only band I ever heard that were loud enough to make a member of the audience suffer nosebleed a few seconds into their set. I was standing right beside the guy. They were so loud, it was beyond pain.

In have a friend in the UK holding one of Slades DR201 for me. I had hopped to have it by now but the move and now this makes things pretty tight. He has been very kind to let it sit till I pay it off.

Well it's a player  that's for sure. I got the bass Mon. and it is unplayable. Nine of the frets have groves worn right down to the fingerboard. it will cost anywhere from 175 -300 to fix. The auction description states the "bass plays well". I am going back and forth with the seller about this. He says what he meant by that is that the electronics work.  Big difference in having the electronics work and the bass being playable. On the plus side it is solid no breaks and sounds good the wiring and pots are dodgy but that's no big deal. I'm going to hold his feet to the fire to get him to pony up for the repair or tell him he can take the thing back or we are going to go through PP and ebay to get this sorted out.

sorry to hear about the frets on that bass scott.

for what its worth i too have some work on my Epi. it needs setup, the action is too high and the truss rod needs adjusted as it has a slight neck bow. not much but its there.  i might have to level the frets a little = i will see.

i guess misery loves company. if i have to take it to a repairman i will have that old pup put in while its there. almost no neck angle and it reminds me of an "F" word slab sided bish.

hope you can get some satisfaction from the seller so good luck. maybe God in his benevolence will smile on us, bring the sun out tomorrow and we might get laid one more time before we die and go to mud heaven.

If I may mediate:

It was offered as a battleworn player and for a forty year old bass that has not been locked away noticeable fretwear is a fact of life. But worn right down to the fret board so even flatwounds wouldn't help?  :o Seller should contribute something to a refret I think. Not all, because the bass could reasonably not be expected to have virgin frets.

Post by: godofthunder on October 15, 2008, 06:31:31 AM
Of course I don't expect the frets to be virgin but the grooves in the frets are ground to the finger board in some spots, from the 5th to the 7th fret is a dead zone, notes won't sound period, not the defination of plays well in my book. I am a reasonable man if he makes a reasonable attempt then everything is cool.

If he said it "plays well" that's a direct representation about its playability, not about the electronics working. If he now says he was only referring to the electronics, that's bogus.

More important, if he failed to mention in the auction that there was very severe fret wear and it turns out that nine frets have grooves worn right down to the fingerboard, then it sure looks like he intended to deceive.

I'd insist he pay for repairs, whatever the cost, or take it back at his expense.
