I think I have to visit you again this summer, Uwe, but now your house! ;D

Now everybody comes out of the closet with their Ric's.
Next we will see Mark here with a Ric & dressed as a man- now that would be shocking!
-
Nigel, did you paint that MMT bass yourself?

Guilty. LOL. Funny thing, I kinda did the opposite of McCartney, the 4001S is originally MG so I had to give it a FG finish then splatter the MMT thing over that. I substituted the teal for the silver/grey he used, just didn't care for the silver and decided I didnt want it to be an exact copy of his. One night, after a 6-pack of Shiners I went to the shed and got the paint out...I'm happy with the results. It's probably been 10 years ago now.
-
Wouldn't it be cool if RIC did a limited run of MMT replicas? Basically a custom paint job on non-S c64's. How about 70 basses for McCartney's 70th birthday, in 2012? Maybe get him to sign them... with a spray can ;D

So...it was the Shiner Bock that made you do it! Wonder how things would have turned out if you'd had a 6-pack of Dos Equis?
And all this time I assumed this was your "Tragical History Tour" bass. ;D But then the street sign would have to say "Denny Lane,", right. ;)
Speaking of that...if I didn't already know your Penny Lane story, I would ask you where the street sign in that photo came from. But you've showed the pic several times on different boards, and nobody ever asks. Guess nobody else is curious. :-\
-
Okay, I'm curious now!
-
Is there even such a thing as a Penny Lane in Liverpool or London? I just knew of people swiping the Abbey Road sign.

This is my "Tragical History Tour" bass, used in my Rutles tribute band(which just got a mention in a BBC special on "Rutland/The Rutles)

I guess my "Penny Lane story" is, when my wife and I got married 5 years ago we moved into Abbey Road Apartments on Penny Lane in Austin,Texas.
-
I didn't realize you had so many Ouch! videos up. Last time I looked there were only 2 or 3. Cool that you got that mention on the BBC, but he could have at least said the band's name.
Hey! I was just nosing around MySpace and saw the baby pics -- congratulations Daddy (and Mommy)! The baby-with-Rick pic is great.

Thanks! My all-time favorite Ric color. Especially when it's not too bright and not too purple-ish.
I vaguely recall reading somewhere that a blue VW microbus was parked near the RIC factory in Santa Ana and they liked the color and copied it.

Here's my 1988 V63 Mapleglo.
Im officially yealous now. The only Rick I still need now is a mid 80ties S. (Preferably march or july.)
-
What kind of pickup is in the bridge position? Is that what the reissue horseshoe pickups look like? It doesn't look like a regular highgain... (I'm trying to embrace my Rickenignorance here!)
-
It's the stock horseshoe pickup with the horseshoes removed. I had an old '88 that I bought with them removed but they were in the case thankfully!
-

Thanks! I had a Lollar-horseshoe equipped bass for a little while, but it had adjustable polepieces. I think I've seen the stock ones before, but for some reason it struck me this time.
-
Yep, its a stock reissue horseshoe with the shoes removed.
I love the way the horseshoe pickups look, but they really get in my way when I play. Its either keep them on and change my whole playing style, or simply remove them. I chose the latter.
I have them wrapped up and safely tucked away in my parts toolbox.

Nice! Can I have one of the original bridges? Or at least the sadles?
-
Nice nice nice!!!
All 4001's?

Good stuff! Wow!
-
Thank you,Thank you all. :)The april 73 jet and the july 72 maple,Never had their original bridges. The jan 73 fireglo is completely original. The jet has a repro(pickguardian)pickguard.Other than the bridge its complete and original. The 72 is complete sans bridge. They are all completely different basses. They all have their own distinct voice.
-
Nice group... and welcome from the UK contingent...

Thanks again :)

I now have 9 Rickenbacker basses (and sold 2). None of them sound and feel the same. Otherwise I would not have 9 ehh. ;) Early, or pre- '73 bridges are very hard to get. I need sadles for one of mine, the other has a later bridge.
-
Other than original Horseshoe bass pickups, the bridges are the holy grail and impossible to find. That being said, the bridge to get is the allparts rick 4001 bridge. They cost about 60 bucks even less on the bay at times and they have steel saddles like the earlier ones. The bridge bass itself is made from steel as well so it will not lift. All you do is cut the notch or gap tooth yourself with a dremel and viola! you have an early70's bridge. ;)
-
Early Rick's have aluminum sadles. Are these allparts bridges better than (later) originals?
-
Yeah.Im looking at mine right now.It a different grade though. Its real high quality aircraft grade aluminum. It doesnt darken or tarnish. The newer ones darken and tarnish something terrible.Yeah they are.Like i said they use steel saddles so they never seaze up and tarnish. They look about as close as it gets.and they have a better bridge to baseplate fit. They dont rock back and forth. My early 70's original bridge is like that. Its a real snug fit with no rock to it.Im telling you the allparts is the way to go until you find the Grail. :)and a whole lot cheaper 8)
-
Hahaha, I love the tarnished hardware. I think my '74 P-bass tuners even have green on the nickel somewhere. :)
-
Yeah,it just means that you dont have to use locktite on the bridge :mrgreen:I love that look on my old fender jazz basses too.But Rickys have always had that elegant chrome plating on there tuners and bridges. They just dont look right green and cruddy
-
Yeah,it just means that you dont have to use locktite on them
I did use that against ratling. But I somehow believe it might be the strings ratling in the sadles which are too deep now.
-
Are you having troubles with the intonation on the bass?If not just make sure there is a sharp enough angle in the cut of the saddle.Mine are deep too but its dead on intonation wise and doesnt seam to rattle at all.
-
My favorite strings (rickenbacker strings) rattle in these sadles. But to my amazement TI Jazz flats do not. I am a lazy sod. I have not checked intonation recently. I usually tune 5th position whenever I suspect intonation is not 100 %.
-
hmmnnn??? slots are cut to wide for your strings?Do you have any needle files?
-
I do not have any instrument related files at all.
-
You can get them at a hardware store usually. You might check to see if the saddles are cut to wide.If they are and you have just a little room left in the saddles you can use a three corner fille and cut a slight V slot in the ones that are buzzing(rattling)that should fix the problem.Or, you can buy some ricky saddles and replace the originals. That way you can play the bass and keep the originals incase you need to turn it :)
-
Problem is modern Ricky sadles will not fit early/pre '73 sadle unit's (I am not sure of this word). The idea of a a three corner fille is a good one!
-
Will the whole bridge assembly fit?
-
Will the whole bridge assembly fit?
It will not.
-
Well, that leaves two choices.Either cut the saddles a little more or just get an allparts bridge and hold on to your original one

These pictures suck Jayme. (I need more of them, preferably taken in daylight). ;-)

here's a couple of them that i made (since ric never made one like it. they're semi-hollow like a 325 guitar, with dot bound set necks );

Beautiful group!

You know what they say: "Once you go Jetglo . . . " ;)

Beautiful collection!
What is the 4th bass from the left? Was that a particular model of 4003?
Down to two Rics myself. Always had a thing for jetglo - last ones standing :vader:

Never quite got round to owning one... any one... +1 on all the above comments, Bert...
Last time I actually played one I was almost exactly 21... the day I bought my Ibanez 12 string (acoustic), courtesy of mum and dad... 37 years ago... :o
-
Thanx all! :-)
What is the 4th bass from the left? Was that a particular model of 4003?
4th from left is a Shadow. Rickenbacker made 50 or 60 of these in '86 for a celebration of a US music shop. It is my best sounding and best playing Rick. And that is what I read from most Shadow owners.

Me and my Shadow in a rehearsal studio last night. The keyboard player took the pic.

Yes, they are. Here's another one on a real human.

I've seen that guy somewhere before.
-
That's the guy who can play any Ric he wants and if it doesn't exist he can have one built for him. And he chose a Shadow. Just sayin' ;-)
Mine isn't mint, has some signs of use, so I'm not afraid to take it out.

This Antiques Roadshow was repeated awhile back. I missed the original broadcast. It amused me because JH and Mike Gutierrez were known to each other via the Rick Resource forum, so his appearance was no accident.
