The Bass Zone / Re: Bassplayers who were a Key influence on your playing.
« on: January 27, 2009, 07:31:45 AM »
I first started playing when I saw a band in Cincinnati called Sampson--they were a band that formed from the remnants of the Daybreakers...

Band had a guy that played a Rick named Pat Hurley, and had the seventies "english" rotosound flatpick style nailed.

For whatever reason I looked up on stage and said to myself "I can do that"...

That was 35 or 36 years ago give or take...been playing professionally pretty much ever since...

The masonite has its own tone-for better or worse...hollowish but not nearly as hollow as something like a Hofner

I get compliments on the sound of my Danos

I never liked the virtuoso thing either---it's about groove, feel and spontaneous creativity

Ginger Baker did some cool trio work / I think big parts of the old Mahavishnu Orchestra were pretty cool--

I really really don't like it when the music becomes a circus act---you know, when Jeff Beck plays a fast lick and everyone claps like its an athletic event

George Benson can really play---sing too

Some of his stuff I may not care for....but the man is like Nat King Cole---he sings wonderfully and plays well also...

Wish I had a tenth of his innate ability

I'd like to add Mick Fleetwood...

Always comes up with something original...even on an otherwise bland pop tune.

Bitches Brew

Turned my son on to it, and he has had a copy in his truck ever since

Bought my first Fender bass from Marc a zillion years ago---Pre CBS Fender Jazz for $125

Wish I still had it--

He also installed tuners in an old RIC for me, also a zillion years ago...

Hope he is still playing with Sonny Moorman, and doing well....

Rickenbacker Basses / truss rod covers
« on: October 22, 2008, 08:10:18 AM »
Is there any source for these--Not interested in a RIC logo--my son just bought some sort of Japanese copy, and just needs a blank cover to close up the cavity in the headstock. It's a single truss rod, bolt on neck, so there is no issue regarding confusing it with the real thing---BTW, it plays and sounds surprisingly good.

This is always in the back of my mind...good luck--if you can make it without being someone else's employee, you'll be better off.
