The Outpost Cafe / Re: Oh wow, if only that were a bass ...

I'll probably get flamed here but...I have always thought the role of "wood" was overblown in a guitar...especially electric guitars...I've played plywood acoustic guitars that sounded wonderful...others sound like a cardboard cigar box (granted, a solid-wood Martin will be louder than a similar plywood guitar)--I owned a plywood string bass years back that sounded pretty wonderful--with it's pickup, it was the equivalent of any bass.

My Danelectros are pressed board hollowbodies, but they sound pretty good--go figure...

It's all in the individual instrument. Some are good--some suck.

YMMV

I love the look of the new ones...

I've got two from the last run...lightweight workhorses that can cop almost any style

There's an Epi ELITE eb3 at Bass Northwest...but they're asking $900 for it...seems way too high to me.

I remember having played ones in the early seventies that woofed too much for me...I actually heard a later one in Black Oak Arkansas back in the late seventies, and I remember being amazed at it's clarity...I didn't expect to like them when I saw them, but they were actually pretty good, and the EB3 sounded killer.

I think they made some solid state flip tops, but I don't think they were ever "prized" like the tube ones---

Seems like I remember him plaing an EB3 on earlier Chick Corea records

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: pedal board

Will check the current draw of the pedals--I suspect the digitech pedal is a hog in this department--a new 9 volt will only last about 2 hours in that particular pedal---kind of limits it's usefulness

pedals are all different-Boss Ibanez Fishman Digitech

not sure what the power supply is...I daisy chain Fishman buffer preamp to Ibanez eq for the upright bass/I do Boss eq to Digitech envelope filter for bass guitar--both instruments then go to a Boss a/b switch, and then into the amp---it's the Boss type connectors on the Digitech pedal and the Boss eq that were causing the problem Saturday

Bass Amps & Effects / pedal board

Alright, I finally bought a pedalboard for all of the stompboxes (2 eq's, buffer preamp for electric upright, and envelope filter)

Worked great Friday night...Saturday night I kept losing power from the power source....it was outdoors, hot and 100% humidity...when I touched the power plug into the stompbox, then the sound would snap on again

Is there a way to make these more reliable, especially the DC plug that goes into the stompbox? (after Saturday, I will put new 9 volts in everything for backup)

Saw the Mahavishnu Apocalypse tour in a small theater in Cincinnati...Ralphe was playing a fretless precision through an SVT---amazing player....I was in about the 3rd or 4th row...they really toured with an orchestra...

Fender Basses / Re: James Brown with Bootsy on bass

I just met Bootsy a couple of weeks ago...one of the sweetest, nicest most gracious men I have ever met...he autographed my Dano...it says "To Pat, Finger Funkin' from Bootsy Collins", and then has a little stick man w/ a smiley face next to it.

Have a picture of him signing the bass, but I can't figure out how to get it here...

not to hijack but...

30 years ago I was not much of a Moody Blues fan--didn't care for them...

Today I find that their music has aged really well, and of all the late 60's early 70's British bands, I find myself listening to them the most. Great albums, and great bass lines...very creative.  Funny to see what ages well, and what doesn't.

People have told be that cutting down a longscale slinky to fit the Danos will somehow adversely affect the tone

I think it's BS

Actually EB roundwounds are the first string that I have developed a brand loyalty for...after 30 years of playing...

I know this is heresy, but I use EB extra slinky

I cut them down...they all fit except I have to unravel the outermost winding on the e-string 1/4 inch to go into the tuner.

super low tension--super flexible for slap

YMMV

haven't found flats for ss

I tried the jet bass, thinking it would be kind of like a short scale t-bird....

It felt cheap to me...and I like Danelectros, so...go figure
