I only change things when they are broke or about to break. I never mess with pickups if I haven't play the damn thing for a period of time.
Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.

That's often true. By the same token, paying 50% more may get you zero percent more. Unless you know you're willing to pay that 90% more on a cheap bass, IMHO it's worth it to listen to what you have first.

I agree.  SX Fender type bass pickups sound very good to me.  I haven't heard their MM type.  The pickup in my OLP (Sterling?) Sting Ray doesn't sound like my '76...or I would hope an EB one.

Some boutique pickup makers have a 60 day no questions asked full refund policy.  That's a fairly painless way to decide if they're worth the cost.

I've had one for a few years, I like it, especially the 32" scale in the same "footprint" as a 30", so it fits in my EB-2/Rivoli cases.

or....you could just wait for someone else to do the work and then sell it.  If I wasn't quitting, and broke, I'd be mighty tempted on this.

I'm not at all averse to modifying a bass, especially an inexpensive bass.  I just think that to give the instrument a fair shake, one needs to play it and live with it a while.  At that point, if you find that it has deficiencies relative to your needs, go ahead and mod.  But having a list of parts to replace before the instrument even gets delivered seems inappropriate to me.

I gigged mine several times before deciding to mod it. I replaced the knobs.  ;)

Well, of COURSE!

Everyone likes a great set of knobs.
