Sunn 200s tube amp question
« on: August 20, 2010, 05:08:25 PM »
Are they 100 watts or 250? I've heard both but have seen a spec sheet saying they are 250. Anyone know for sure?

i would guess prolly closer to 140 watts peak with prolly closer to 70 RMS. i have been gathering parts for a few months now to build a 200S. the parts i decided on are:

1) Hammond 1650R output tranny.

i decided on this tranny because Hammond is notorious for being under rated (so are the Dynaco/Sunn trannies) and because i found a schematic avilable fron Dan Torres (usually not a big fan but he has his good points at times) that basically duplicates the 200S power and output sections of the 200S. the amp was basically lisenced from Dynaco with some upgrades as it was originally built.

2) a PA 060 power tranny from a Dynaco ST70 amplifier as this thing put out 70 watts RMS with a burst power rating of close to 140.

again this tranny closely duplicates the power tranny Dan suggested in his schematic which was a Hammond 260M PT. it should handle two KT88's at 70 watts RMS with no problem. i chose the PA060 because i got it for a song on the bay. specs: B+ winding is 720VCT (360-0-360) at 300 ma with 55V bias tap. any one of these trannies could probabaly be used to rebuild or repair a 200S Sunn amp.

i am still undecided on the choke tranny as i prolly am going to use a solid state rectifier but am not at that point in my study of the schemo yet. the original Sunn choke was 10 Henries.

i will be using the preamp Dan has designed as it is a Bauxandall (sp?) preamp design that uses a cathode follower 6FQ7 (6CG7) instead of the 6AN8 used in the Dynaco/Sunn amps. a Bax preamp is like a Fender preamp and is in fact, as far as i know, the basis for Fender preamps in thier bassman series. a Bax is also the type preamp Sunn used in the 200S.

i cannot post the schematic here because Dan has it copyrighted and for sale on his website. i bought a copy.

all this is going into a Fender AB165 chassis (and the parts will fit as the power tranny is a laydown type). might call it a FenderSunn 200S when i am done.

i am sure PBG can correct any mistakes or myths i have perpetrated here and i welcome his input.

Weber speakers sells a kit based on the 200S and calls it a 100 watt amp.

Are you sure you don't mean the 2000S? It's a 200 watt amp. Sniper covered the 200S nicely.
