I found it a bit humorous in the Hank vid as there was something going on to the left that was an obvious distraction to them...

Both of them are quite good.  She gets around that bass really well. His yodeling is a surprise...but well done.

I like the art on her bass, and I note the shield that appeared on off-side of the bass in the Lovesick Blues video.  I haven't seen one like that before.

A little more about them (http://playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.com/2017/12/post-580-remarkable-lovesick-duo.html) from a jazz blogger although from what I've heard so far, I definitely wouldn't classify them as jazz musicians.

Their latest, a cover of Charlie Walker's big 1958 country hit.

That was my father's favorite song by Hank Williams.  I've heard it many, many times through the years.  That brings back memories.  But my favorite by HW was "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." a song I still consider a masterpiece.  Plus, some of the cover versions are very good, too.

Once travel is once again allowed! I'd go see them in a heartbeat, they're cute and play real well. Their style(s) of music are a bit archaic/nostalgia to me, but it is done with so much heart and enthusiasm, you have to love them.

Gig videos show her standing on stage.

It's a big instrument, but you can fold the endpin as much as you need, and it works. The "1st fret" F on the E string should line up with your eyebrow. Francesca's bass looks a little higher than that, but she manages it very well.

My son started on upright at the age of 11, and moved to a full-size bass at 12. My upright bass teacher is 1.50m tall and she kills. It's doable.

They sound quite good, I always enjoy these.

How the heck does upright "slap" work? It looks like she's pulling the strings hard for the 1 and 3, but I can't quite see how she hits the percussive off-beats. Is it the thumb or the palm or the fingers or what? And what do you smack - muted strings? Wood?
Title: Re: Italians having fun
Post by: ilan on November 18, 2020, 06:48:24 AM
Now that I have my old upright back home, I intend to find out. But I'm pretty sure it's the palm and fingers, you smack the string against the fingerboard, and I can tell you it hurts at first.
Title: Re: Italians having fun
Post by: morrow on November 18, 2020, 07:28:05 AM
It's sometimes called the ungentle art .
I've heard that some of the old time rockabilly slap guys had their right hands wear down to just a nasty little hook .
I play upright , but my slap skills are non existent .
Title: Re: Italians having fun
Post by: patman on November 18, 2020, 10:29:02 AM
I have found that tone has to be very dark, and string height has to be higher than I like to play, in order for it to sound right. I pull the note with my index finger and middle finger, and do the slap with the index side of my palm.

It hurts, and I don't do it terribly well.  Sounds like crap on my WAV bass. Your mileage may vary.

Go to about 01:57, slow down the playback speed to 50% and watch her right hand. 02:48 shows another angle.

Wow, that's.... an intense way to play an instrument.  I remember my brief foray into (jazz) upright when I was 17... I fought the instrument for 3 months and I lost!
I cannot imagine plucking and hitting hard enough to get those sounds.

Does this work?

https://youtu.be/u0eAxMxhAUE

I only posted it - I detest videos with hot babes in cages, it conflicts with my cerebral nature - because it is the last "contemporary" hit I remember with a prominent surf guitar (in the chorus). That it's at least played with a Burns guitar in the vid is a nice touch.

Not as prominent in this live version.

https://youtu.be/nVateNFcv38

Essentially, Girls Aloud kind of predated the Pussycat Dolls in image, only with more people (allegedly) singing. They came from a UK casting show, but enjoyed some longevity (almost 10 years) and garnered a string (no bun intended) of Top Ten hits which were perhaps a bit more edgy than your usual girl group dance troupe chart fodder. Very much a UK phenomenon though.

Yes, those are visible here. I don't see the connection to the Lovesick Duo's version of Nadine. Sure, their intro sounds somewhat like Wipeout by the Surfaris but it's really just sped up Chuck Berry licks.

I don't think it's a stretch to connect the typical guitar-centric surf sound with the style of Chuck Berry and his contemporaries, and with music of the 60's.

This is a great Junior Brown take on "409" with the Beach Boys.

Surf always sounds a little frantic to me - hence my association. I thought the Lovesick Duo's Nadine too rushed, but I'm no fan of ultrafast music in any shape or form, whether it is Skiffle, Ska or Speed/Thrash Metal. Highway Star is sort of my natural limit. I don't like playing fast-metered music either und I'm not good at it.

She's always dusting off her instrument - that indicates housewife qualities which can enhance any blossoming long term relationship.

I have an eye for the little things too in this forum of vapid superficiality where the blatantly obvious is so woefully often valued above the deeply meaningful.

My right hand would be shredded playing that .
There was a book on Rockabilly slap playing called "The Ungentle Art"
The author alleged that some bassist's right hands had withered away to a nasty little hook after years of that abuse .

That slap tone is the reason why producers in the late 50s started having a Dano "tic-tac bass" double the upright, which led to Carol Kaye's signature pick-and-mute sound.

Probably their baby sis.

Nice song, they're getting better and more refined all the time.

Having heard their four CDs more intensively now and over proper stereos, I can attest to the fact that Francesca's E string has a much lower signal than her other strings. Alas!, the curse of a double bass.

It's a bit like listening to old Status Quo albums, you could always hear when Alan Lancaster hit the E string on his Mustang, the signal was much weaker than on the A string. He came to use it as a style element in his playing.

Nicely sung, I like her voice, but that overt slap bass sound is not for me, too little tone. That is not saying that she is not doing it well. But be it on acoustic or electric bass, a bass can quickly sound too percussive for me (be it Lee Rocker or Larry Graham), I'm more the long notes/cello tone guy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSeyfWTLnWg

Francesca's bass playing has become much more percussive over time, it's part of her development as a player and no doubt owed to the fact that the two play without a drummer. In Elvis' Fever version the bass is relieved of percussive duties due to the finger snapping and occasional drum breaks/rolls.
Title: Re: Italians having fun
Post by: Pilgrim on December 20, 2021, 06:45:08 PM
I think the sound is the result of the way the visible mic is set up. The percussive sound of the strings hitting the board is overwhelming the tone of the string because of the mic's properties. You can't mic both her voice and the instrument that way and get accurate sound. Each should be mic'd separately.

A mic mounted on the bridge and conducting sound from the strings would probably yield a very different sound.

Never underestimate the enlightening power of the mighty Quo!  (And marvel at Alan Lancaster's pushy "downstrokes only"-technique - I use the term allegorically ...  ;) )

PS: You guys are probably right about the mic being to blame for Francesca's clattery sound. Heck, I still love her ... And her brother of course.

You're gonna laugh when I tell you from which band I heard Johnny B. Goode first! This version here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PckVlp7Z8d4

Even though he Dead version is actually quite faithful in feel me thinks.

The most daring and radical version I've heard is this one, it would have probably bewildered good ole Chuck (I doubt whether old grumpers ever listened to cover versions of his songs) and it sure alienated Priest fans en masse (so much they withdrew it from the live set at the time), but I love it for the minor key riffs and harmonies they've stuck into a 12-bar major key song, the neo-classical and harmonized lead runs plus Halford's take on the chorus, especially at 03:55 where he really ups the ante.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zxoGFjFJlk

Still, no hard rock (Status Quo) or even heavy metal (Judas Priest) without Chuck. He came up with the core ingredients that still make this music so addictive to this day.

Man, I had (thankfully) forgotten it was even on there!!!

Not an album I revisit often, Blackmore or not. Probably great if you were there, but the audio alone is so ramshackle/slipshod I find it barely listenable. Lord Sutch had of course told no one that he was secretly recording the - audibly underrehearsed - show and planned to release it. Nick Simper, the first DP bass player, also played and it is reported that Blackmore (who had been instrumental in Simper getting replaced by Roger Glover a few years earlier with Simper taking DP subsequently to court) and him didn't exchange a single word on that gig.

Thanks for digging it out! But with Lord Sutch, you needed to see him too.

BTW, my original quote from Great Balls is accurate. I just dropped the needle on it to verify. The best thing about that track (other than Ritchie whizzing around the fretboard with abandon) is the crackling "fire" effects, complete with bells and sirens.

I see that Francesca got a nice old bass for the recording, instead of her usual one with the painted design on the top. Sounds good.

This is from when they were in Los Angeles. She didn't ship her own bass over for the recording session.
