Title: Hiwatts and Thunderbird and The Who
Post by: godofthunder on May 11, 2016, 06:01:43 AM
My Who tribute Who's That is getting closer to a full scale rehearsal and our first gig so I figured I better dust off the Hiwatts. The rig is not a exact replica of Entwistles but it is the best I can muster at the moment. The rig is set up to resemble Entwistles rig circa 69-70. Here is the run down left to right.  Hiwatt 2150 cab, Then a DR201, DR103, Bass 100 all three stacked on a turned around Sound City cab (often the heads were stacked on a chair, later a road case) next a MarshallJCM800 2x15 (soon to have a salt and pepper grill and bagged Hiwatt) topped with a Hiwatt4123.  I am still tweaking it, I have two Sound City 4x12 cabs I may incorporate as At one point Entwistle had some Hiwatt badged SC cabs mixed in. https://youtu.be/0bjYBWvlAi0

Saw the band rehearsal vid on facebook last night. Bass sounds great! It's very rude and obtrusive sounding, which is just what the music needs.  ;D

Sounds great!!

I'm curious - are you doing Entwistle's pseudo-biamp approach, where you use more treble on one amp and more bass on another?
He started doing that earlier than I realized - here's a quote apparently from 1967:

Quote
From Guitar Player, October 1967

Excerpts from an interview with John Entwistle and Pete Townshend conducted June 18, 1967, in San Francisco, just prior to the Who’s appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival.

GP: What is your amp volume setting on a ratio of ten?

Entwhistle [sic]: Five or six, full treble. I use two amps: full treble and full base. The cabinets are split, so the treble comes out on top of the amp. I set my guitar about two-thirds on, and then at the end I turn it full up.

    GP: What about amps?

Entwhistle: Sound City, they’re an English amp. We both use sixteen twelve-inch speakers and two two-hundred watt amps. That way we get a nice even sound.

Definitely going for the biamp thing. I'm running more bass through the 2x15 and more treble through the 4x12. I think I need to turn up the treble and presence on the 100 watter running the 4x12.

Lol have a Sound City 200 plus, two 4x12 and a 6×10, I could put up a wall of Sound City amps!

Have you tried recording that way?  Build a wall of amps and then mic it with a single LDC from a few yards/meters back, vs a close  mic or 2 on selected speaker cones?  Epic.

Anyweaty, that's a great tone in the vid; gnarly growl.

Is your guitarist good for amps? You could loan him the Sound City gear? I've seen clips of Who tribute bands using Marshall, and it just isn't right.  ;D Then all he needs is a SG, fuzz pedal taped to the stage and a white boiler suit!

Sounds great, shame the clip is so short!

Sounds OK,  could you clean it up some with a solid state amp?   ;D. Just kidding, it sounds really  authentic!  Nice job!
