Gibson Basses / Gibson at NAMM 2019
« on: January 11, 2019, 03:29:41 AM »
I saw a pic on Facebook with  a few guitars that will be featured at the upcoming NAMM.
If you look closely you can see two Thunderbirds with chrome tuners. And what looks like two shorter bass guitars (SG maybe?)
Are the Tbirds with chrome tuners really Gibson bass guitars or are they Epi Tbirds?

My next build is going to be a bit different from the rest. No mahogany, no set neck.
But still a hybrid of sorts.

Here's a couple of ideas:

Single coil in the classic sweet spot

Without pickguard

Single coil a little bit further towards the bridge

And without pickguard

I have just finished the build of a twelve string bass for Rob van der Loo, bass player of Epica.
Rob wanted an Explorer shape bass with quilted maple top and two humbuckers, each with its own dedicated output.

It took me quite a while to build this. But now it's finally finished. And I'm happy with the result.

Here's the specs:

- 34" scale
- Mahogany body
- Bookmatched Quilted Maple top
- Three piece Mahogany set neck. Glued in
- Transparent black stain on top
- Solid black on body and neck
?- High gloss transparent acrylic finish on top
- Matte transparent acrylic finish on sides, back and neck
- White binding
- Ebony fretboard
?- Mother of pearl position dots
- Jumbo frets
- Buffalo horn nut ?
- Dean twelve string brass bridge set
- Two spokewheel double action trussrods
- Carbon reinforcement strip in the neck
- Lace Alumitone Bass Bar in the neck position
- Lace Alumitone DeathBar in the bridge position
- Allparts stacked pots (volume/tone volume/tone)
- On on switch for coil splitting (humbucker-single coil)
- Gotoh GB 350 lightweight bass tuners
- Gotoh Stealth ST 31 guitar tuners
- d'Addario EXL 170 - 12 strings

A friend of mine helped me out with the electronics circuit. His name is Bas Becu (check www.bqmusic.nl)

The Outpost Cafe / Nylon Metal - Burn!
« on: August 13, 2018, 11:22:24 AM »
Thomas Zwijsen records his records at the studio of a friends of ours. Thomas studied classical guitar at the Artez conservatoire in Arnhem and Latin/jazz/Brazilian guitar at Codarts in Rotterdam. In combination with his interest in flamenco and metal, this strongly influenced his style of guitar playing.
Thomas’ first solo album Nylon Maiden contains 11 arrangements of Iron Maiden songs. Former Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley is featured as a special guest on The Clansman.

Now he's recorded some non-Iron Maiden songs.
Like this one, that will no doubt be watched by Uwe with suspicion  ;)

Gibson Basses / Sonex by Gibson

Just a thought:

Did Sonex by Gibson ever make a bass guitar?
I don't remember seeing one.

Gibson Basses / Music videos that feature RD basses
« on: July 16, 2018, 12:32:27 AM »
I was searching for this thread to post a video that featured a Gibson RD Artist bass
But it looks like there isn't one. So I'm starting this one here.

Gibson Basses / Pelham Blue '86 Thunderbird II
« on: June 21, 2018, 04:14:27 AM »
Saw this on Facebook

Quote
I'm just gonna leave this here for you all to drool over. It's only the semi-mythical '86 Gibson Thunderbird II re-issue, of which only about 10 (yes, ten) were made for the Japanese market. Single pickup, custom shop, natch. Oh, and it's PELHAM BLUE! As used by ancient UK noise-pop gits, Midway Still. Come and worship her... xx

Pretty cool! Only ten made?! Wow...

Guitars Etc. / my first guitar build
« on: June 12, 2018, 02:22:13 PM »
My sister-in-law asked me to build a guitar for her husband as a birthday gift.
He asked for a Les Paul Scorpion. The one with the red stripe.
But with my own personal touch.

Didn't quite make it in time for his birthday (which was three weeks ago), but it's ready now.

The Brooks LP-SC. My first guitar build (I've only built basses so far)

On my website you can also see pics of the build process

Gibson Basses / More Ripper prototypes
« on: April 04, 2018, 11:17:45 PM »
A while ago this dark fretless Ripper prototype popped up on Ebay.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-GIBSON-Bass-Long-Neck-With-Original-Case-Age-Unknown/322809273538?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

----

It looks a lot like the one that Uwe has in Ze Kollekshon (featured in The Gibson Bass Book)

----

Last week I got an email from a guy who told me he has a prototype from 1973 too.
It has the same burst as the Mark Evans Ripper that was sold the other day.
He is thinking about selling it. But he's not sure about the price.

----

And that gentleman that sent me the email also told me there is one more Ripper prototype at Dave's Guitar in Wisconsin
Which looks really nice. He tells me they are asking $10.000 for this bass. Which is too much if you ask me.

http://davesguitar.com/dgs_collection/prototype-bass-mid-70s/

So that makes four Ripper prototypes of this type.
Who would have thought!
