Title: Lefthanded bassplayers playing Thunderbirds.
Post by: Blazer on December 08, 2008, 08:58:39 AM
Let's face it, the Thunderbird is one of the few designs that continues to look cool when strapped on upside-down.

Well how about a Firebird..................Here's Paul Raymond of UFO playing one lefty and taking care of the keyboard chores as well.
Lights out in London from 1978, how I love this band!

Rock on  ;)

And Raymond even played that righty lefty strung righty!  ???

Which is why Schenker always liked him as a rhythm guitarist because he found that "Paul's chords always sound different from regular strumming".

I remember seeing Raymond with Savoy Brown on the Street Corner Talking tour.

thank you for the warm "video welcome" . ;D

as to the lefthanded upsidedown thing and most importantly:
notes are notes, chords are chords, EVERYthing has a pattern...it is all about memorization. ( and quick fingers )

My friend Mark said he posted my video, and he never knew it was me until today, after the many times we messaged each other...so I had to come say HI to the gang.

and p.s. uh, that video is probably one of the worst you could have picked of the 10 or so Maiden tunes I have on the channel that I do using one of the Tbirds. ---hahahaha

hi gang

thank you ChrisP. I posted a couple non-gibson Tbirds in the "other basses" section. just in case anyone wanted to see that JackBird in a real picture next to my DillionBird.

unlike TbirdMark who has a dozen or so GibsonBirds, ( even a good looking [cough-cough] FenderBird ) I never owned one.

for me playing upside down it was the ideal shape, and flipped, there is ZERO neckdive. my other basses are p/j looking charvels, and although they look retarded flipped over, I made my money as a player, not as a model for a photoshoot.

Well I chose that particullar video because it love the way your Jackson looks with the black body and white binding, it looks really sophisticated.

I always liked the Fender Aerodyne black+bound for that reason, just never liked the way it played. and a black+bound Ric was always out of my price reach.

I'll stir up the pot a little.....

Since I'm one to play EVERYTHING, old/new/fast/slow... because it is no longer a JOB with a 50 song setlist... it is just for 100% pure FUN, with 10's of thousands of song to choose from

so with that introduction, here is your inverted lefty playing my SB EPI-tBbird on TWO very short worldwide songs EVERYONE over 30 years old knows, and NO ONE else on all of youtube has a cover of. ( among the other videos I did that are total "noone else would cover that" videos )

I like the mirrored Carvin logo:)

A couple of years ago I saw a band consiting of only lefties. Two lefty guitards, a lefty drummer and a lefty bassplayer. I adviced them to put a mirrored Premier logo on the drums and the same with Marshall on the amps and they totally couldn't laugh about it....

well you know Chris...upsidedown bass, upside down monitor.

there was one nutcase on the TB board that asked if I got dizzy playing inverted before he knew what it meant ( I guess he thought I played "truly" upside down ) --

YOUR TONE ON wONDER wOMAN IS AWESOME.
T.Y.V.M.. Rat.

the rig is bass-RP50-EQ-amp-one 4x10, and DI blended into the pa.
my thing is I like the "live" sound, and all the videos are from the camcorder mics...BUT they are youtube free video covers, not recording sessions so I don't care. The actual saved videos are way better sounding than the FLV conversions on youtube.

Your post is one of the best reasons I DON'T change the pickups in that EPI like everyone seems to want to do with every cheap guitar and bass out there. I only consider it cheap in one big way...the playability...it does suck compared to my other basses with that crappy wider EPIneck, but tone, it's no 2000.00 Gibson piano bass, it's an EPI.  That's why everyone should have at least 2-3 instruments.

I actually think WW was done on a fretless, but from the crappy youtube videos I could find for background music, it is very hard to tell.

I'm not done with old t.v. show theme songs if your into it, check the channel every now and then. :)

Very nice sound indeed. I like my Epi's pups sound alot, thats why I'm not thinking of putting emg's or something like that.
But I like its neck too, I prefer wider necks, jazz-type necks isn't my cup of tea.

I wil look for it slinkP, If it is available and playable, I'll do it in the "MyNameIsEarl" list of requests, and PM you when it is done....although I appreciate the fact that this Forum will allow embedded videos, I don't want to fill it up with my stuff, because I feel that is not right, especially when most of my videos are done on other basses besides my TBIRD.

there are lot's of other REAL leftys, that are equally as good or better than me, and I don't want to turn this thread into a competition of "who can play better".

the couple vid's I posted are ok, but no more, cause to me it is shameless advertising to my youtube page.

although I want to believe that.... I watch myself on video and even I have to laugh cause the normal fenderish looking dual horn basses I have are turned over and just SO weird it isn't cool, it is just plain weird. however if YOU think it looks cool ....thank you. ;D

the Bird's "horn" is a lot more subtle, so in that I do agree...s.u.p.e.r.c.o.o.l  8)

uh-huh, "SOME" look cool flipped, not "every" one  ;) I had a generic EB/SG looking bass, and the equal length horns were always my favorite.

well if you think about it, we all use our thumb and palm in our playing....in FACT the elbow does come into play on that perfect angle we all look for to comfortably hold our arms over the guitar body.

now you did forget about the wrist angle in relation to arm/elbow angle in relation to thumbs/fingers/palm angle in relation to neck shape and angle?

ya I saw them, as nice as they are.....but I just don't have 1/2 a grand  :-\

one of these days I'll own a REAL lefty, but for now, I just make do with the flipped guitars, since a real lefty would have the G string on the bottom, which is opposite of what I normally play, and would be confusing to go back and forth with a lefty/righty guitar......

thanks Barkless....lefty's are many now a days but....

I have yet to find another inverted amateur "BASS" player who plays this way normally/everyday, and is actually good at it...

do I gloat about being so alone, and do I appreciate being unique?

YEP :)

so let's recap:

#1 playing inverted? --insane to begin with
#2 playing a tbird inverted? -- I have ZERO neckdive issues with the button on the wing and a 2" nylon strap.
#3 ...uh, I can't swear here so let's forget about #3

Hey everyone. Long time lurker here, first time posting. Thought I might share my experiences with a "flipped bird" so to say. I loved the look of the Thunderbird, and always had my eye on an Epi. Determined, I would not let my being a lefty handicap me from playing it. With a little help, I had the strings flipped, the bridge intonation set for a lefty setup, and the strap button drilled into the lower wing. I don't ever plan on getting rid of it.

Old photo, but you can get an idea of what an Epi looks flipped. No, my hand doesn't hit the knobs. I only have that problem when pick playing really close to the bridge, and I don't do that anyways.

And a 90 degree jack plug works wonders so you don't hit the plug with your wrist.

This bass has served me so well, and I get every tone I could ask for from it.

Oh and a buddy commented that the Bird on the pick guard looks like he is dive bombing towards some prey (or to poop), pretty cool, or funny I think.

Yes, you might've seen me around talkbass amimbari, but I don't post around there much anymore and not under the same name. It's almost too huge a forum for me to enjoy.

I also play a lefty SX P-bass with flame top and maple neck. But I usually pick the bird over the SX, just because the Bird gives me everything I want.

Here is a much much more recent picture, just after jamming with my friends and having fun.

ya, sometimes I get lost in the sea of righthanders playing "insert your bass brand here" threads, but being the minority over there playing lefty, playing inverted, AND using Jackson guitars, I get to see the bias against me ( OH THE THRILL OF IT ALL )

Tbird1958 turned me on to this board, and since then, I have met some more friends, some great discussions, and some awesome bass porn to check out--AND another outlet to show off a few videos to those who generally don't see people flipping guitars too often..... just out of curiosity since your already a lefty, did you ever try playing inverted on someones righty bass?

anyway....., in order to provide you with a proper welcome, here's a jam that many hundreds of people heard while walking onto center stage for almost 30 years, and this jam is to welcome you to the LastBassOutpost center stage, and hope you stick around for a while and contribute your experiences playing a birdFlipped.  ( I don't have the sheetmusic for that jam, so I just followed the chord changes and winged it )

I've never been welcomed with the tonight show theme before, I feel honored  ;D Thank you good sir. I am amazed at your ability to play with the strings strung righty.

To answer your question, yes, I've attempted to play righty, a righty upside-down as a lefty, and a pure lefty bass. I just felt better about playing lefty. I can play really simple lines on a righty upside-down, but nothing too complicated or with too much moving around.

Perhaps someday I'll post a video of my own playing, but alas, I am too shy with my abilities.  :-\

But yeah, talkbass was great, but after reading over there for 3 years, I feel like I'm just reading the same things over and over again, and there is so many people, you don't ever get to know anyone personally. I already feel like part of a tight knit group here. I look forward to posting more.

like Tbird 1958 said, look at all the inverted players coming out of the woodwork now...!!!
GLAD I could be the leader in the pack of inverted-wolves. And ya, like I have told people for years, dont watch, just listen.

as far as double-thumb slap style, let someone else do it, I'll play ANYTHING ELSE (fast/slow/easy/complicated) is never a factor anymore that someone throws my way.
the slap technique is easy, but inverted the MUTING is a killer.

p.s. welcome and glad you both SAF + TUBEHEAD are part of MY inverted band of brothers  :):)

then I wil ltake some pictures playing it with the G string on top (I like g strings on top :P) I got a couple of basses still strung that way. I used both ways at home but live only with the E on top. Just to make sure I'm not confused in the heat of a gig
I only have ONE bass I play with the E on top right now that is a POS, and like you I LOVE to play both ways, just to mess with people's heads, but for me, I have played G on top for many, many years, so I play like that on stage and in the jamrooms.

I have a ton of charvel rightys but FINALLY, FINALLY found a lefty version, and hopefully it will arrive safe and sound in a few more days :)

I may put one of my other necks on it so the body is correct, but the strings will still be G on top.

Did that Charvel come in yet?

And, for the absolute hell of it, and for no reason other than to make a fool of myself, I present to you, me playing on my Epi Thunderbird, converted for pure lefty usage. Enjoy (or don't).

One of my most favorite songs to play on bass, I find it so fun to play.

and I'm playing through a small Ibanez 20 watt practice amp, so it won't sound all that great compared to what I'm used to.

Good job.  :toast:   I've never listened much to the Who except for their early stuff, and that's one of my favorites.

haha that epi sounds just like mine, and that was really good, and I also have played many WHO jams in the day including Substitute
why you would think we would laugh at that is crazy. if your that good on that song, your just as good on many others i assume and you should be proud of that and post videos all over youtube!!!!

there's STILL a shortage of GOOD lefty players compared to the righthanders

and yes I did get the thing, the setup was still good from the music store that must have had it sitting near a window on display forever because the pearlwhite color is beautifully sun-aged, and looks very nice.

this one will stay strung up E on top until I get a righthanded reversed headstock neck as a spare so the headstock is in the correct position still, and if I sell it I can put it back the way it was.

to show some people I also play E on top and not JUST inverted strings,
I'm playing it YOUR way --- E on top

Ah thank you for the kind replies and compliments everyone  :)

Can't think of anything more fun then just cranking my little 20watt practice amp up and jamming to some Who.

You know what amimbari? Just yesterday I went into a small mom n pop guitar shop just to look around, and the only lefty they had was a Charvel PJ just like yours, only black. Sounded and played great (with the exception of the buzzing, but that's an easy fix), but I couldn't justify the $360 they wanted. I'm really diggin' the sun-bleaching on yours.

And I think its awesome that you can play both ways. Either way, we southpaws got to stick together!

I'll post another video after the ol' camera is done charging.

ya 360 is like 100 more than it would be worth to most people, considering the "LACK" of lefty's who would even look at a Charvel when there is SX lefty's for under 150, and I'll bet that thing has been sitting in there for a while like mine was.

I don't know how many lefty's they made and I know it is not rare or anything even though I never saw one, but to actually see someone playing a lefty Charvel ( guitars included ) is a rarity.  ( until now )  :P

and p.s. your 20 watt amp would suck for a band situation, but jamming by yourself, who cares...hell I used to use my 100 watt radioshack stereo with 2 15" 3 way home speakers for noodling before I had enough amps to have one in my couple jamrooms.

I'm sure it would surprise the people I play with, thats for sure. I wouldn't mind adding it to my small collection, but like you said, its a tad too pricey. I never knew Charvel even made lefties until I saw your white one.

I usually play through a Kustom 2x15, as the 20watt is only for bedroom practice. It's loud enough to shake the room so it works. I'm saving up for a 4x10 over the summer, so I'm hoping for something different from the boom of the 2x15.

Here is another video. Decided to do something ska (something I rarely play).

A few mistakes in some spots, but I tried to make it not so noticeable.

your good, and all your vids have comments turned off, so I cant post there, so I'll say it here, and that is......

lefty-righty-inverted whatever, your good, and you should show it to the world --- -heck ya, play your favorites.

Ah yeah, I'm internet shy when it comes to videos  :-\

But thank you very much, I don't get complimented often and when I do, it always pushes me to play even better. I'm working on my ear and learning the fretboard at the moment.

Concerning lefthanders: The Beatles were really on top of the game, with the whole rhythm section being lefthanded. Ringo himself once said - I think it was in Max Weinbergs drum book The Big Beat - that he played righthanded during the drive, but when it came to fills, he played them lefthanded. Maybe that's why some of the fills he did with The Beatles sounds so... different and explosive?

I don't usually drag the Jackson out of the case too much anymore, but I figured a thread bump with a lefty playing a tbird was necessary  :)

so here's me on it this weekend playing an old time favorite.

Awesome like always amimbari. I've been playing my SX P-bass more lately, only because the Bird is need a setup. Taking it in Tuesday for a little "buzz kill" and whatnot.

I was wondering, has not having position markers on the neck been any trouble for you?

Another drummer who did that was Keith Moon, usually when a drummer plays with double kick drums they use their main foot (the left if they're left handed and right when they're right handed) to dictate the main rhythm while using the other to play accents. Keith Moon however switched from using his right foot to supply the main beat to using his left foot to do so when double playing was required, there aren't many drummers who can match that feat.

It's a bit like a right handed player playing the main part of a song on a right handed bass and then switching over to a left handed bass only to do a solo.

a lot of difficulty in the beginning, but that was so long ago....I liked the reverse triangles the best, cause I could see the wide edge of them perfectly with a little tilt of the neck here and there, the dots can be more of a challenge, but like I said...that was years ago.

one more "lefty playing a tbird video" for the "OLDER" gang here at TLBO: this one was taken from the Abbot and Costello movie with the Andrews Sisters singing it. The Jackson is the FARTHEST thing from sounding like an upright bass, but who cares....the notes are correct :)

Hey, even I'm not that old.
well Dave, neither am I at 48, BUT.....my parents/grandparents loved 30's40's50's swing music, and drilled enough of it into my brain as a youngster before sex, drugs and rock and roll ruined me for LIFE :)

I have enough 45rpm records to post 5 videos a day for the next 6 months of that type of stuff <<<< but I won't, as it is just "not me".

have a great week, and let's see some more "leftys playing tbirds" in this thread soon.

now your REALLY talking 30's music :) My biggest factor is no fretless, no upright, so it will never sound authentic ---so all I can promise is that if I do it, it will be "note" correct ( or at least as long as I can HEAR the bassline ) clearly under all the other junk in there.

30's-40's music is so....so......so..... walking bass line-ish ( but at least the chord structuring is consistent )

forget about the people who do play REAL lefty Grecko/TokaiBirds, or flippers like myself for the righty versions but I meant MEMBERS on this board.

come out come out wherever you are :)
