No doubt neck thickness has an affect on tone but IMHO thicker isn't necessarily better. I've never cared for the tone of any bass with a very thin neck. OTOH none of the thick-necked basses and guitars I've had were anything special in the tone department. There are too many other things that affect tone, hard to pin it down to one factor.
