Beauty but I suspect it has that huge baseball bat neck.

Yummy.  And more switches than anyone but Jack Casady could understand.

I can guarantee it has that huge baseball bat neck. And a flat fretboard to make it even less comfortable.

Two of the switches (near the tailpiece) are actually levers for the mechanical string mute. AFAIK the switches in the top horn are tone switches, one for each pickup, engaging different caps. Then you have two separate rotary volume controls, and a master volume in the lower horn like all on Gretsches.

With these pickups, painted f-holes and the Space Control bridge, I'd guess it's a 1964.

Never seen one before that was not sunburst. Must be pretty rare.

The tailpiece could be a newer replacement part. I think all 6072's had an extending endpin so the bass can be played like an upright. Also I would expect the gold plating to have been oxidized or worn off by now, it looks too new for a 50 years old bass. On mine you can hardly notice the gold plating.

I think some of the bass looks like replacement parts. As for the neck, I agree, the ones I've seen are huge.  A big minus for me.  The bass is stunning.  If I collected just to collect, and not play, it would be mine already.

+1 on the beauty stakes... nah... +100... ;)

Surprisingly scruffy workmanship round that rear access hole, mind you... caveat emptor...

That's probably typical, since it was covered by the padding.

It is. Mine is the same.

Relisted with a $50 price drop. $1,849 sounds like a very good deal to me, assuming there's nothing terribly wrong with this bass. I'm actually surprised it didn't sell by now. 5-7 years ago, even single-pickup 6070's of the same vintage in standard sunburst sold for $3,000+, and burst double-pickup 6072's went for more.

Yeah, I think the price reasonable.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes to sell this beauty.

I would have to have all kinds of surplus cash and every bass I ever wanted before I bought one of those. There is a reason they didn't catch on. Nearly as big as a double bass with a neck to match. There has been one at the HOG for years. I played it once difficult is about all I remember. I walked in the store a few years ago and Geddy Lee was sitting there playing it, he wasn't impressed either.

What?  A bass has to be easy to play to be appreciated?  What's the world coming to?   8)

Geddy of all people wouldn't like that neck.

IME, the thicker the neck, the better the tone. The same applies for uprights, by the way.

I have to agree there...I'm playing a sixer again (huge neck), and I think the whole bass resonates, not just the body.

No doubt neck thickness has an affect on tone but IMHO thicker isn't necessarily better. I've never cared for the tone of any bass with a very thin neck. OTOH none of the thick-necked basses and guitars I've had were anything special in the tone department. There are too many other things that affect tone, hard to pin it down to one factor.
