Merry Christmas!  Oops, too late.  Happy boxing day!  Oh wait, that was two days ago already.
Err... Happy new year!

Oh yeah! Carlo made a J-ish bass.  I prefer the P body shape though.

Wow that's even more moserite-y now!  Super retro. I kinda like it.

Are they selling anything that will make me play guitar like Nels Cline?  I'd buy that.

The Outpost Cafe / Re: Scott Weiland Dead

This was pretty revealing. A familiar story for many people I'm sure... but I've never experienced much in the way of drugs, so it's only when somebody can articulate it like this that I feel like I can get a glimmer of what kind of hell it can become.   Sad that the optimism of the end of this article (from 2005)  proved temporary.

I was sorry to hear this. Never a deep fan, I don't know the album tracks, but I thought STP sounded really good  when they got away from the grunge thing. Glam suited him better I think.  (Their bassist was always pretty good, come to think of it.)

And I really liked when Weiland went solo and indulged his love for Bowie.

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Watt with a Rickenbacker!

Yup, the white P/J bass was a frankenstein.  I googled it, he talks about it quite a bit here:  http://www.talkbass.com/threads/minutemen-firehose-tele-bass.61987/

I miss George Hurley too! Here's Watt, Hurley, and the franken-bass in question - first with D. Boon in full on one-of-a-kind performance (and no time for tuning apparently) ... and then a bit later with Firehose.

Double Nickels sounds like all fingerstyle, albeit with a brighter sound than he plays with now. I was thinking of the pick on earlier tracks like "Cut" or "If Reagan Played Disco".

Heh!  I'm with Granny.  Yeah that's a lot of great early Minutemen stuff. Pretty solidly delivered (aurally if not physically) by Tom Watson standing in for D Boon, and Raul Morales standing in for George Hurley.  A lot of this stuff was written when Watt played with a pick, sounds mushier here.

Ebony board on a short scale! I'm really intrigued to hear what that ends up sounding like. I think I have literally never heard a shorty with anything other than rosewood. Very cool!

I think you said the body is mahogany? What about the neck?

The Bass Zone / Re: Jaco movie

I heard about it from this:   http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_656_-_robert_trujillo_flea_aziz_ansari
I've been listening to WTF for quite a while, my favorite interview show... he usually interviews comedians and actors, but there's a fair number of musicians too.
(Rarely bassists, but there's a typically incomprehensible Watt interview in the archives.)   Oh, and there was one with the head of some state or other ;-)

No idea if it's any good, and I can only take moderate doses of Jaco, but I'll probably see this:

This is awesome. I love when people overcome a decades-long "I'm not a musician" misapprehension.  If you are doing music, you are a musician :)  You don't have to be a prodigy or a genius, you just have to have fun!
