Gibson Basses / Re: The Who At The Super Bowl - PinoBird?
« on: February 11, 2010, 11:42:14 AM »
No offence meant to any Who fans but what significantly "new" has emerged since "Who Are You"...? my most played recording is almost certainly "Who's Next", and I own nothing ("new") post "WAY" (Who wise, excluding JAE stuff)

Depends what you mean by "significant"!

There's the two albums with Kenny Jones, "Face Dances" (1979ish?) and "It's Hard" (1982ish?).
Neither sounds anything like the Who with Keith, so anybody looking for more of the old Who is bound to be disappointed.  Both have some good songwriting by Pete, as well as some clunkers. And some cool Entwistle playing. These are the only studio Who albums that capture Entwistle's distorted-Alembic sound.

Then there was a whole lot of nothing during the band's hiatus.

Then there was the "Then and Now" compilation which I still haven't bothered to buy; it featured two new songs, "Real Good Looking Boy" and "Old Red Wine". I still haven't even heard the latter. I never bothered to buy this as I have all the other stuff on it and RGLB is a pleasant enough song but no big deal, kind of boring actually.

Finally, there's "Endless Wire", the first "new Who album" in decades, released in 2006.  It includes a mini-opera called "Wire & Glass" with a typically baffling plot by Townshend that seems to be related to both his "psychoderelict" project and the old "lifehouse" story.  There are some great songs here, some boring ones, some really weird ones that most old-school Who fans will probably hate.  Despite the name on the cover, in terms of sound it's basically a Townshend solo record with lots of Daltrey vocals - it doesn't even use much of the current touring band.  But hey, I like it. I had to give the band props for playing a good chunk of this material on their 2006 tour, I thought that was a ballsy move for a dinosaur band.

I'm with you about "Who's Next".  I might rate that as my all-time favorite album by anyone.  I like all this later stuff, but I sure don't play it that much by comparison.

Also, what's with Pete using 7enders now?

He's been playing strats onstage for the past 21 years. Add a couple years around '67 and Pete has probably logged way more stage time on strats than any other sort of guitar.

By comparison, he only played the SG Special from about 1967 to '71, and Les Pauls from about 72 to 79, yet those are the iconic Townshend stage guitars because... well, because those were the peak years for the band, both onstage and in the studio. Nobody but us Who geeks gives a damn about the past couple decades.

Hey Pilgrim, I was wondering if anybody else had a Genz-Benz. I got a Shuttle last year - my fourth teeny head... i went through 3 generations of Acoustic Image heads before I decided I needed something with better EQ and a bit of overdrive.

I use the Shuttle 6.0 into an EA CXL112 and EA CXL110.  I've only had one gig since I got the Shuttle and damn I wish I was playing more these days... it sounded SO FREAKING GOOD.  Bass at that gig was a Gibson LPB-1.

Why didn't I have this gear back when I played a lot!  Such is life.

Cool 3 knobber! Real Junior vibe on that one.

Yeah, I dunno why, I had no great interest in the LP basses until I saw that particular one pop on Ebay and I just lost my mind.

I don't actually play it out that often because it's my heaviest and hardest to play bass, the neck feels about three miles long and half a mile thick :)
But goddamn it sounds good.  I looove the combination of mahogany and ebony.  The Genz-Benz shuttle 6.0 head I got recently doesn't hurt either.  Really rocking combination... crank the input gain on the amp and it just roars.

I've seen a few LPB-1s in this thread but I don't think I've seen one in the black/yellow sunburst finish yet, so here's mine, alongside my bandmate's LP guitar:

The Bass Zone / Re: Bassplayers who were a Key influence on your playing.

Well, first there was Paul McCartney.  I wasn't even really aware of what bass was in those days. But I had pretty much memorized all the Beatles albums, including subconsciously the basslines, by the time I was 10. I am still in awe of some of his beautifully simple bass melodies; "Dear Prudence" comes to mind.

Then there was the Entwistle era. Right around the time I got interested in bass, I also got obsessed with the Who. From the intro of "Pinball Wizard" I was hooked. I dug out my Dad's copy of "Live at Leeds" and used to love playing with the balance knob on the stereo to figure out what Pete and John were doing. If there's a single formative album in my playing, that would be it.

Then there was Tony Levin.  A friend turned me on to Peter Gabriel; I picked up a copy of "Plays Live"  and I was fascinated by all these weird (and very prominent) bass parts among all the synths. I played along to that album easily dozens of times, even tuning down to C# for "In a Humdrum".

Then came Mike Watt. The same friend turned me on to various punk-related things; the Minutemen were far and away my favorite of the bunch. Such an inventive and physical approach, and funky too.   I went out and bought Ballot Result and learned to play along with all that stuff.  (I have a thing for live albums, apparently).

Lots of others, but those are the big four.

I used to listen to Fun House quite a lot.  This is sad news.

By coincidence I was wearing my Mike Watt T-shirt today (from the El Mar Curo Todo tour). Poor Watt's had plenty of shit to deal with already.

The URL spec mandates that URLs are case-sensitive. IE works on that link because it is helpfully ignoring the rules.  :P

EDIT: THese are gone now

Cleaning out the soon-to-be-baby-room, I found a pair of forgotten black rack ears for a late-nineties Eden WT-500. I sold the head long ago, but forgot I had these rack ears lying around.  I do NOT have the screws.

They will also fit other similar size Eden models. From looking at their online parts store, that includes  WT500, WT600, WT800,  and the WP100 preamp.  I assume (but can't be sure) they would also fit the WT1000, WT1250 or WT1205 models - most likely any WT-series head with a 17" x 3.5" face.

Eden sells these direct for $15 a pair plus $5 shipping.  Mine are in excellent condition, I never used 'em, it seems a shame to throw them away, and not worth selling on ebay, so ... Pay for your choice of shipping and they're yours!  But again, I don't have the screws that go with them.
