I used photos of that thermostat in a presentation a couple of weeks ago to illustrate Internet control capabilities in home systems.  We are running classrooms remotely in much the same way! For the demo, I controlled cameras in our of our classrooms from a conference room in another university 40 miles away.

However, the day after my presentation I opened the paper to read a news story about hackers invading home automation systems. Kinda took the edge off.

The Insteon system seems to have particular potential for hacking, depending on how it's configured..

I've worked at the Honeywell plant for almost 37 years that made the T87 round thermostat, somewhere around 900 million of them I believe. Things have changed quite a bit in the last few years. Most of the products are made in Mexico & China.

I want the model that matches the temperature to that of the ex's heart, but I doubt a central air unit could plumb those depths.

Reminds me of the smoke alarm/Carbon monoxide detector review I saw one time where the dude said the product didn't work for the intended purpose, but was great at detecting farts and their intensity, prompting a rather unexpected sales spike and follow up reviews became a farting contest.  It was hilarious, if I find it I'll post it.

I don't remember that one, but there are a number of great product reviews on Amazon. Like the now-famous Kleenex review. And check out the product reviews and Q and A for the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer and Uranium Ore.

Dave, you still have far too much (brilliant researching) time on your hands... ;D

Al... being in security and the joys of IP cameras and access systems, I remember visiting one company HQ and playing with their PTZ cameras on three different continents, and having to get the night staff in a control room in California (whilst watching me on the cameras) to let me through various access points...
Some folks have pursued this wifi and IP control nonsense to the n'th degree...

Thinks... the joy of the Highlands and dodgy broadband...

Honeywell... my preferred intruder alarm manufacturers...

If research was easy, it wouldn't need doing...
Staring at that event horizon is a dirty job, but someone has to do it; something's going to come back out of it one day...

When I read the topic of this thread my first thought was: "To go where?"  :-[

That's how far we have come.

The T87 was great. They stopped making them because of the mercury right? But God forbid if you don't use a lightbulb with plenty of mercury these days. At the same time the electric ballasts you have to use now are junk compared to the older ones. Honeywell makes a lot off the fiber for carpet I sell. Anso Nylon makes for a great carpet.

I'm, errrm, open to both alternatives, but I'd probably settle for one rather than switching between them from measurement to measurement!
