Gibson Basses / Impulse purchase - Epi Explorer
« on: March 12, 2015, 08:51:59 AM »
Well, now I've done it. This is the first "my wife is gonna kill me" purchase I've made in a while. So it's shipping to my office.  ;) I have a list of stuff to sell, so once I get that out of the way, I can bring this thing home. Looks pretty great in the pictures. I've been dying for a korina one, but they just haven't been coming up at a reasonable price. This one comes with a case and I got it for $315 shipped. Couldn't resist! Someone painted the pickguard gold. Looks decent in general, but they did a poor job. I'm thinking of cleaning the edges and painting the top black. I also want to put gold covered TB+ on it. If anyone has a pair of those covers, I'll take em. I need to check eBay.

Bass Amps & Effects / Anybody near Raleigh, NC? Craigslist pickup.
« on: January 19, 2015, 03:28:29 PM »
I've been looking for an Alembic SF-2 Superfilter. They're very hard to come by. Found one on Craigslist in Cary, NC. Cash only, no ship. If anyone is right near by and willing to pick up and ship, let me know! I can send UPS shipping label or provide UPS number to ship on. Thanks!

Gibson Basses / Geddy Lee and his Thunderbird
« on: January 19, 2015, 03:12:34 PM »
Word on the street is Mr. Lee has been collecting basses as of late. I know he's an avid collector of wine and baseball memorabilia. I guess it was just a matter of time. I have another shot somewhere where you can see 2 rev-birds, and 2 Ampeg devil basses hanging on the wall behind him.

Gibson Basses / Shorty T-Bird with shiny bits

This caught my eye in my eBay daily e-mail - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-Thunderbird-Short-Scale-Bass-w-Seymour-Duncan-Custom-Shop-Alnico-Pickups-/271604119478?ssPageName=ADME:SS:SS:US:1120

Kinda sexy, but that awkward knob arrangement still baffles me.

Other Bass Brands / Lowe non-rev bolt-on bird

I hesitate to call it a Fenderbird, but it's obviously in that vein. Not bad, though I'm not crazy about the headstock. Wood binding is a nice touch. Lollar pups...

Other Bass Brands / NBD - Alembic Distillate
« on: July 10, 2014, 08:04:30 AM »
Well I did it... I finally got myself an Alembic. I lusted after one as a teen getting into Stanley Clarke and Entwistle, but there was no way I could afford one. So, I sold my first Ric and bought an alumi-Kramer. It had the look - small, round, symmetrical-ish body, 4 knobs and 3 mini toggles. And the truth is, it had a lot of the tone too, as well as a great P tone and a good Ric/Jazz hybrid tone. Very impressive for something fully passive. So, fast-forward 32 years, and I got the bug BAD! Seeing Stanley up close a couple of months ago didn't help! For months, I've been searching the net literally every day for the right bass at the right price. Finally I posted something in the "wanted" section of the Alembic Club, and landed a really nice '86 Distillate, complete with original case and paperwork, all in spectacular condition. 20 pieces of wood! (there are 5 plies on both the front and back of the headstock) Mahogany body, walnut top, maple and purpleheart neck, and ebony board. I really like their low pass filter tone control design. I'm still getting used to it and working on setting it up the way I like. The thing is top quality throughout, as it should be - this bass new, today would list for $8800! This particular Distillate was ordered as a long scale (most were 32'') which is cool by me. It also has a longer upper horn than some earlier ones, which is good. Kind of like a Spoiler on top and a small standard on the bottom. Time will tell if it ends up being a real keeper...

Gibson Basses / What the heck is this SG/EB0 bass?
« on: June 27, 2014, 02:26:58 PM »
It's kind of cool, weed sticker and all. But just what is it? And that pickup???

Gibson Basses / Explorer Shadow
« on: June 21, 2014, 09:25:36 AM »
This just went unsold on eBay and has been re-listed. Seems like a really good price, though the finish is questionable. I was tempted to grab it myself, but I'd end up routing it for T-Bird pups.  8)

There's an Alpine white Epi that I have my eye on...

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Cleaning gunk off your bass
« on: April 02, 2014, 07:33:49 AM »
My two main live basses - Ric 4003S and Les Paul - both have a nasty layer of film on the tops - mostly where my forearm rests - that seems impenetrable with normal guitar polish. I've even tried rubbing compound (white Turtle Wax) to no avail. Would naphtha be too aggressive? I know there's decent finish under there, but I can't seem to get to it. HELP?!?!

Gibson Basses / Improperly installed truss rod?
« on: February 17, 2014, 08:49:27 AM »
So the truss rod on my '94 Les Paul has always been a little tight. And at one point, I had to take the nut off and put a couple of washers over the threads. A while ago I noticed a small crack, maybe 3/4'' long, right behind the truss rod cavity. Didn't think much of it until the last time I had to tighten the rod to flatten out the neck some. The crack started getting worse, so I backed off. I took it to my local guy, and he seems to think the rod was installed improperly. I've had this bass for about 8-9 years, played it a lot, and never had any real issues. What do you guys think? Seen anything like this? Potential cures???

Other Bass Brands / Odd LP shaped Guild

Looks like a Guild neck and bridge on a Les Paul body. The pickup routes are oddly positioned... Anybody see anything like this before?

Wow, I never knew these things had three output transformers. Not a fan of the folded horn, but this is just plain cool!
