Much like the Toaster pup, which underneath has 6 poles.

Wow, that's nice, shame they removed the original Volume knob.

Fretless '72 with the goodies... checkerboard, toaster, gap tooth bridge. What a beauty.

Just love that scene and with JG it just hits you :P

Pretty sure this particular pickup surround can go on either way... I remember being confused which way to put it on when I took the cover off last year.  I looked back at this pic of it from 2007 as point of reference.  Guess I should have compared against another 4001  ;D

They will only go on one way, as the screw holes are at different spacings, both vertically and width wise.

If there are no more holes beneath, it could be on the right way, according to the assembler on that day.

The difference in size of these certain years really shows in the pic, I would say this is probably as different as the 4001's got, wafer to chunky.

I have so many Ric's and never had a problem with tail lift, in fact I just thought it was an urban myth, until now.
That is a very good picture you've shot there, brilliant.

As has been pointed out on Rickresource, over spray on the worn part on the back at the neck join, kind of says it all.

Ah, good point and I agree the 1 has a certain meat to it, it also looks the business too like it's name i suppose. I have a 2 on my Jazz and my Precision, although I can't tell on the Jazz, the Precision just sounds brighter, perhaps not the best thing for a Precision.

Thats what Routers are for  ;) ;D

??? Funny, I thought Badass made the ''11'' so you didn't need to use a router, they even matched the 5 screws to the original.

Total bargain, ''seen lots of stages'', doesn't look that used, looks like a one owner and well looked after for sure.

On the change over in 73, the whole bass changed ( well everything got bigger) and the fret board was another 1/8 higher off the body, so the Badass 1 was ok, but fit one to a pre 73 and it wouldn't work, it wouldn't go low enough, although why you would want to replace the gap tooth bridge anyway, unless it got broken that is.
Other reasons for bad fitting or the need to sink the badass into the body would be perhaps the 73 74, 1/2 inch neck pup spaced 4001's which have been over strung and the body starts to bend in that routing, so needing a much lower bridge setting and even the originals don't go that low in these cases.

No extra visible holes here and who says you need to route?, extra holes for a cover plate are some thing that really gets me, just a dab of contact adhesive and it's there.

I went down the same route as you, had a BG 79 since 82 and just loved it, but always wanted a JG, looked at the 73's and saw that more desirable features were available in 72, so I found one and went for it and managed to hold on to the 79. Very pleased I hung out for this period 4001. Best of luck, oh I think my NBDay thread is down the line somewhere.

Sounds like a good swap, I would give them a call and see what they will take, cash etc.
The fretboard looks like it's started separating at the nut, this is an easy fix though for a luthier that's been here before.

Sell your 78 carefully and you should get a similar sum back and get to keep your ohsc too, a one/two owner 4001 that's been looked after is quite desirable.
