You Scots are sounding too English.

FIT?

Awa' an bile yer heid, min!

So ah'm playing ma bass at a gig an' 'is loon saunters up tae me and sais "fit wye de ye play a Gibson bass?  Ah heard they wir gash."  Weel, ah'm nae een tae back awa' fae a debate but kennin' ah'm spikkin' tae a payin' customer, ah tak's it easy on the boy.  "Weel, ye heard wrang.  Ye'll ken foo wrang ye are fan ye hear me play".  So ah plays ma set and efter the boy comes bak' up tae me, lookin' a' sheepish.  "Aht wis brilliant, min!  Fit bass!  Fit soun'!  Ah'm awa' hame tae brak' up ma' Fenders and chuck 'em on the fire", he sais.  "Weel", sais I, "ye dinna hae tae dae that min, fit wye nae try baith an' see fit ye like the best?  Let's hae a beer an' nae mind that we ivver hid this conversation."

I can switch it on and off.  You should hear me and my dad when I go home to the 'shire.  To be fair, I rarely write in it, so it's probably horrible and phonetic, and my sincere apologies to those who know much better than me.

This has gone awfully quiet, hasn't it?  New year, more pics please!

Here we are at my birthday bash, I'm playing my Epi Les Paul (Not so) Standard and we're all grinning like idiots ;)

But the reissue was long scale, right? I have a distinct long scale playing memory from playing one when they came out.

Affirmative.

Other Bass Brands / NBD: Yamaha SBV 500
« on: November 28, 2015, 12:15:55 PM »
I picked up a used Yamaha SBV 500 recently, I've wanted one of these on and off ever since I became aware of them.  Recently on the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi has taken to playing an SGV 800 guitar and it really set the GAS off again.  I had hoped to find an SBV J2 (double split P pickups, block inlays) but it was Japanese domestic issue only I believe.  This 500 appeared on eBay and I don't have any basses with "Jazz like" pickups so I took a punt and got it for a keen price - cosmetically it has its flaws (mucho buckle rash in the back, some dings, some finish chips around the extremities) but it's solid and the neck's good.  Sounds good to me and most surprisingly of all, it balances pretty well on the strap - I was expecting neck dive and got none (albeit with a wide, neoprene strap).

Anyway, enough waffle, pics or GTFO, right?

Gibson Basses / Re: A few questions about Ripper basses
« on: November 20, 2015, 03:47:23 AM »
I played my Ripper at a gig last Saturday.  Admittedly it has SD Ripper replacement pickups in it but I really don't understand where you guys get this "non-assertive" thing.  Also admittedly I was playing through an Ampeg 8x10 rig (sweet house gear!).  But to cut a long story short it was sounding absolutely beasting, most certainly assertive!  The singer/keyboardista was in front of me in the firing line and turned around every so often to give me a half approving, half disapproving look ;)

Someone's going to jump on the fact that the pickups are "modern" replacements but I thought the point of them was that they were wound/constructed as per the originals - "The Seymour Duncan Ripper bass pickup is an exact recreation of the originals inside and out" - taken from the SD Custom Shop website.

What gives?  Have I got a magic Ripper, or is it just a case of me hearing something different to you guys?

We have normality - anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem :)

Great job - rescued!

Gibson Basses / So, are we definitely getting NO basses at all in 2016?
« on: October 30, 2015, 03:17:13 AM »
I realise they haven't thought of us bassists as particularly important (profitable) at the best of times, but is that it?  Game over?  It bothers me.

I know this has been brought up in a previous thread, I just felt like having a gripe about it :P

Gibson Basses / Re: Nice (re)fin for a Bass IV ...

I hate input jacks on the face of a bass body - catastrophies waiting to happen.

I'm not as averse to them as that (right angle jack, cable tucked into the strap, no worries), but why this one so damn close to the knobs?  Looks weird and if you're not using a right angle jack plug, probably gets in the way too.

Which "professional" put the jack socket there?

Does look good in cherry, but then again I am biased given what I had done to my Ripper ;)

Looks like bidding has ended again, this time it only went up to $611.00. We'll see if the owner lists a reasonable minimum bid this time.

Is it wrong of me to have a chuckle to myself about that?  Greedy bugger got his comeuppance.

this seller sells mostly cars, trucks and parts. he may not have a clue as to the 20/20.

Would have been better if the seller didn't have a clue in the right (i.e. cheap) direction.

Well sod that, I'm not that interested!  And still didn't trigger the reserve :P

I see it's back up already, I wonder if the seller lowered the reserve.

Hmm, no postage to UK, seller isn't answering questions either (got them switched off it seems).  If I was to go for this, is anyone willing to act as postage intermediary on my behalf?
