It's the nature of a bass player to have a more all-encompassing perspective on the universe, life and mankind's role in it.

Tha't because he has time for all that, having already put in the 3 months needed to master his instrument in rock/blues level.

If in doubt, play the root in eighths, that makes 95% of the world's guitar and drum population happy and is not too demanding on them.
