Next Sunday my youngest boy (Nick, 12) makes his stage debut in a small club in Raleigh. Back in December, my oldest son (Chris, 17) asked Nick to sit in for their drummer (who was pretty ill) a day or two before that show, but it got postponed due to a snowstorm. Now they've rescheduled the show to the 23rd of Jan, and the band asked Nick if he'd like to play drums on the first 5 songs of their set.
The fact that they've recognized that Nick was willing to sit in back in Dec., and they've offered him a slot is pretty cool. Their drummer is a key member of the band and Nick is a bit unpolished (they practice in our Jam Room, so I can hear the difference between the two on the same songs), but they're overlooking that aspect of it and working the top of their setlist around him. Nick's been taking lessons for a few years and seems unphased about getting on stage and banging away. I wish I had that fearlessness - having never been on stage myself, I can't help but be nervous for him...same as I was the first time Chris stepped up on one a few years back. They're just a High School garage band, but they've been writing their own stuff and taking a few liberties with some contemporary covers.
It should be fun, exciting and nerve-wracking - I see more hair loss on my part.
